Simple Terrain Pack Q's Wed, 15 September 2010 10:38
Hi comrades,

I'm just working my way through the expansion packs (yes, I know, a late arriver), and have a few questions relating to the Terrain Pack rules ... If anyone is able to help I'd be xtremely grateful.

Here we go ... Wink

1) 'Church' p10

Under this heading the book states: "A unit on a Church may ignore the first flag rolled against it" (no problem there) It then states: "Also see the Targeting optional rules in the Battle Star Tokens section"

I've been through the Battle Star Tokens section of the book and can't see what this might be referring to, either specifically with regard to the Church, (or any other building). (The Church inclusion on p10 is the only building I have come across so far which has this mention of the 'Targeting optional rules' ... ) Any suggestions? Smile

2) 'Big Guns' p13

Is there any significance in placing three cross hair markers with the Big Gun badge? Is it to enable the gun to target three seperate units simultaneously?

3) Also with 'Big Guns', does a cross hair go down onto a target if it retreats?
The book states: ' When a Big Gun scores a hit on an enemy target and the unit is not eliminated or rertreats, place a cross hair marker on the hex of the targeted unit. ' From this i'm assuming the Big Gun successfully targets a retreating unit.

4) 'Combat Engineers' p13

Combat Engineers are able to clear minefields. How exactly is this done? Is it as simple as removing wire? (unit moves onto hex, stops, removes minefield badge, cannot battle.

5) The book states, 'If the Engineer unit cannot clear the minefield, it detonates'.

Under what circumstances might the Engineer, having arrived at a minefield hex, not be able to clear the minefield?

Hope those are all clear, I have a few further questions relating to the scenarios found in the Terrain Pack .. gonna stick those onto a seperate post to save making things too confusing ...

... thanks for reading everyone, looking forward to your collective wisdom! :@)

Jim

2. The Big Gun can have up to 3 units it is zeroed in on. It's a bigger treat to the enemy when you know the Big Guns get 1 extra die on his next attack. I have never had 3 cross hair markers placed at once.

3. If the unit is hit and retreats the cross hair marker is removed(or not placed if these two things happened on the same attack)

4. Yes as long as he is elligble to battle(have only moved 1 hex)

5. If he has moved 2 hexes or the mine is in a terrain hex that has battle restrictions then the mine detonates.
In the Vercors Campaign there is a mine in a forrest hex in one of the scenarios.

As to # 1 --

There are two "Battle Star" rules which may apply:

"Calling in Air Strikes"

"This rule can be used with a hill, a church...."

and

"Forward Spotting Artileery"

...applied to artillery as long as a unit occupies a specific terrain hex, .....

There may be at least one official scenario that uses at least one of these rules. So far, the "Battal Star" rules have seemn little use in official scenarios.

Players may also opt to use any "Battle Star" rules when designing their own scenarios.

As you find your way through the expansions (welcome, by the way, to the growing battle field that is Memoir '44 expansions...there is a growing number of them) don't forget to check the FAQ for some answers. It's very possible that you'll have questions that aren't included in the FAQ and we're all here to help, but it's a good place to look!

In regard to your Church question, you'll discover that there are several little features in the game that haven't been utilized to their full potential (or at all). Another example that comes to mind is the "Broken Bridge" tile that isn't used at all.

Have fun!!
