Ha! -- I'd love to do reenactments, but it's a really expensive hobby...it might cut into my M44 budget...

Yes, you wouldn't want that...especially with the Memoir '44 Online game in the works and any other expansions they're working on!
So does everyone have to buy all their own gear?! That would add up quickly. Looks like fun though.

They do all buy their own gear -- and most units are very picky about what they can buy. For example, if you're representing a unit from 1943, all your gear must be replica or restored from 1943 or earlier. A decent uniform and helmet can easily run you $500, and double that for your standard, firing M1 Garand replica.
I priced it out a year or two, because I was thinking about "enlisting" with one of these groups, and I think I had it figured at just under $2,000 to get started. And that didn't count ammo (blanks) and other expenses that you'd incur over a summer of reenacting in the region/nation.
But it goes to show how passionate these guys (and sometimes girls) are about preserving the memory of WW2, and teaching it to new generations. The first time I went, I thought it would be a bunch of war porn -- old men with too much money and time on their hands running around playing guns and pretending to be in Band of Brothers. But they're very serious about the historic elements. I asked a question in a German HQ about the Enigma machine replica, and got a ten minute speech about Enigma and how it changed over the course of the war. Very cool.

@ 5 Star: Admission this year was $10 per person. I'm not sure what the date is for next year, but it's usually on the last weekend in September. If you Google WW2 Days in Rockford, IL, I bet you find some info.
@ad: No idea what a functioning Sherman goes for, but I know it's above my pay grade! I don't know the details on how individuals or private reenactment groups pay for the replica armor or artillery, but if you looked up reenactment websites, you could probably find out more.

Great Pictures, looks like a great event. My wife and Myself (well mainly me) are hoping to get to TankFest next year at Bovington to see the displays and get to look at the only remaining tiger 1 in operation.
I would love to be able to buy a tank, if only to ring up an insurance company and see what sort of quote they would give me

Ha,ha -- I wonder how many drivers would tailgate me if I was in a Sherman. Then if someone did rear-end me -- umm, did I feel a tap -- I dismount -- look over the offending vehicle (a totaled Caddy Escalade just for fun) and then say to the other driver -- look -- man,you nicked my tank's paint

Not sure what a "runner" is -- if you mean the old Hollywood trick of putting a paper mache chassis over a tracked vehicle, then no. The recreators are very strict about allowing only rebuilt and replica equipment, from the uniforms to the cartridge belts to the rifles to the vehicles. For example, there was a Porsche truck (not pictured) that was one of only four still in existence in the world.
The Sherman, if I remember correctly, was assembled mostly from surplus parts left over after the war. So it never saw action in the war as a tank, but parts of it may have.
I don't know if that's a "runner" or not.

I think that they do make the practical concession of having modern, more efficient engines though.

A "runner" is a military vehicle that basically is able to move under its own power and pretty much functions like it did when active except perhaps to fire its guns -- esp the main cannon. I am sure there are strict govt regs on that.
This is opposed to an permanent stationary exhibit piece.
I know Ft Knox, Ky does have some WW II runners - now that is living history for you.

Ahhhhh...so I wasn't even close. 
Yes, everything operated; there were no display pieces. I've actually got a picture of the Sherman carrying back several reenactors through the crowd to their encampment. Tanks and artillery pieces fired blanks, as did all infantry weapons.

The Hetzer may be the one from Camp Mabry here in Austin. And yes it runs, and they use it all the time when they go out to camp Swift to run around in the woods going pew pew at each other...
