How about a house rule to bomb frozen rivers and make them thus impassible ?

You are of course free to use house rules that both players agree to. However, I would think that most scenarios with frozen rivers are balanced around that fact. It might become exceedingly difficult for the attacking force. I would suggest you take a close look at the scenario before implementing this rule.

Interesting idea and you're always welcome to create your own house rules.
Do you know if this tactic was ever used during World War II? It seems like it could have been used, but I can't think of any examples off the top of my head.

You could use the bomb crater markers from the Air Pack.

Just a further question.
Are we talking about Strafing/bombing with an Airplane (1 die) and bombed on a star?

That seems to make sense. Or since a frozen river would be relatively easy to hit, maybe the ice is broken if you roll a Star, Grenade, or Flag. That way you have 50% chance of success but it's still not a given.

Good thinking, Jesse, but I still find it hard to think this would be very useful.
How often would you want to bomb the river instead of the units?
And if you allow bombing of the river, wouldn't you have to allow the building of pontoon bridges also?

make the river impassable is a little hard for me and scenario will need to be modified. But just roll 3 dice instead of 2 or allow grenade to hit is more the ice is weaker so there are more risk to cross.

Knocking out 4 hexes of a river with a single Air Power (or Artillery Bombard) card would have profound implications for a scenario. Imagine knocking out the river in Breakout to Lisyanka just before a unit exits.
And by the way, if you blow a hole in the river while a unit is on it, is the unit destroyed?

I think issueing swimmies to the opposing units will be the new SWA.

Personally, I would not use this rule in my games but that's mostly because I don't play with House Rules. However, if this was incorporated in the "Special Rules" section of a scenario it would make more sense. But if others like using house rules this one could work...though I still wonder if it was a tactic used by anyone in World War II.

Yes, a unit would be destroyed and would count as a medal. This would follow the exact same idea as if you destroy a bridge with a unit on it.

I think the Germans bombed the ice of the Ladoga Lake during the siege of Leningrad, using heavy artillery.

Surely the frozen river would just freeze over again?

If we're saying that it's possible to bomb a river, then surely that chucks up all kinds of complications when a unit on a frozen river is attacked (at least by artillery- rifle fire probably wouldn't do much)
would the unit be hit in the normal way, but with the additional factor of a star smashing the ice and dropping someone into the water below? would make for some terrifying odds for infantry trying to get across.

A lot of Soviet units (particularly armour and motorized infantry) were lost in frozen lakes during the Winter-war when the Finnish artillery shelled the lakes to break the ice. I had a special rule for it in the Tolvajärvi scenario, where after the artillery had battled another dice was thrown, and if the result was a star a figure was lost.
