I received Brummbar's new WW1 game this week and had a chance to play it. It uses the basic MEM44 game with new rules. I just wanted to let you guys know it is an outstanding addition to the original game, and all for only $5. Malcolm (Brummbar) must have put a lot of thought and effort into the design. It plays out very well. I would also like to thank Richard Borg for allowing Malcolm to use his basic game as the basis for his new one. I remember as a kid (and I'm over 50 now) going to my cousins and him showing me his new game, Avalon Hill's Tactics 2. I've been hooked on board games ever since. I've got quite a few in my closet but none have the playability of MEM44. Malcolm's new version just adds another dimension to this wonderful game.

Do we know any details about this? Is it essentially an expansion to M44 (new scenario and 1 or 2 extra actions) or a completely new rule-set using the same basic structure and figures?
Where can we get more information about it?

Thanks Eric for the kind words and to everyone that has supported my efforts here.
Dire Heroes is a stand alone game rule set that requires the M'44 basic set to play. The game lightly simulates the 2nd Battle of Ypres (the first effective gas attack). Though kept simple in the spirit of M'44, these rules are quite a bit different from M'44.
I was inspired when I discovered that my great grandfather fought in this battle and was wounded in the left thigh by shrapnel. While he was out of the war for awhile, he returned to be in the leading wave at Vimy Ridge (where he was again wounded). He returned yet again in the autumn of 1917 and went on to fight the brutal battles of the last hundred days. He was wounded for the last time on Oct. 1, 1918 but survived the war and came home (thus me!).
The Great War is often overshadowed by the conflict that followed yet set the tone for the tactics and strategies to avoid another static war.
Thanks again everyone, hope you enjoy!
(ps - hoping to make this available internationally soon!)

I know it uses the M44 figures, but what else is include (i.e. is just the rules) for the order? Just didn't see anywhere where it lists what is included.
Thanks

Only the rules? What about scenarios to be played with those rules?

Glad to hear you received your copy Ad79, thanks again for your help on the project.
The book is a rule set that shows how to use the M'44 components to play the game.
It also comes with a single scenario (in M'44 terms) which simulates the 2nd Battle of Ypres (the Gas Attack).

Remembrance Day - A day to remember
After making my parents so many times go wild after asking "when it will arive?", today afternoon, after entering our apartment I saw an envelope on our table... which contained the prize of Brummbar's contest!
Thank you, Brummbar for sending me this wonderful game!
Just opened the envelope; AAR to follow.

Well, Michael. You convinced me to bring out this little gem again. Blayed the origianl Ypres scenario which I helped playtest before release. A fun game and works well solo.
Germans won a 5-1 morale victory after the 6th and final turn.
Looking forward to seeing what you and Malcolm have done lately.

Thanks for the kind words folks!
It's almost ready for public release and will initially contain the Gas Attack at Ypres basic and advanced scenarios...but Michael (Bayernkini) has motivated me to make an expansion (his Cambrai scenario is excellent and look for a Stand on the Retreat from Mons from me). Still some playtesting to go on those though.
Play by Email means I can also take on all combatants! (Ad79, Randwulf, Szili, LooneyLlama etc... I'm looking at you!!)
I'll be posting more info soon....
In the meantime, looking forward to the multi-player server test on Saturday...the Bear will be hunting!!
Cheers!

I remember playing Cambrai at the end of November, poor British tanks (if I played them correctly) were surrounded and eliminated by using Hutier infiltration tactics. So far I've only played some 4 games, 1 against my buddy, the others solo. I'm really keen on seeing new scenarios and more players!

Did you make one yourselves ?

Sorry, I should explain a little. This is a game I designed that uses M'44 pieces (board, figures etc...). Although it uses the M'44 pieces, it is not a WWI version of M'44, it is a rule set unto itself.
You can order a copy through my website (brummbar44.com).
I am close to releasing it on the Vassal system (a method that allows people to play boardgames online...though not nearly as sophisticated as the fine M'44 Online that the good folks at DoW have put together!).
I hope to release more details soon on my website.

Malcolm, I'd love to play. Just let me know when. The Cambrai scenario looks very interesting. I see you have included some armor. Will the rules be the same as Gas Attack at Ypres or have you tweaked them?

Cool, I'll shoot you a file when it's ready (won't be long now).
The Cambrai scenario uses the same base rules as Gas Attack but with some new unit stats...still playtesting that one at this time...but it too is close.

The new game you are developing looks very interesting
As you say a new version will be available soon i'll wait until that's ready and then i'll be ordering a copy to wing it's way across the Atlantic.
Would appreciate a quick post to advise us once the latest version is ready to order.
