Whats with the bell?

When you click on a player in the lobby there is a bell in the bottom right corner.
What happens when you click on it?
What happens at the other players end?
I can hear the bell dinging when I am connected, but don't get any messages.
Does that mean it is ringing for me or for someone else?
If its for me how do I knwo who is ringing?
I am currently sat on the main screen (with the options for play sol, play, play expert, etc) and I hear the bell ringing (ding, ding) periodically.
Is that someone trying to get me?
Am I showing on the lobby list even though I am not in the lobby?
Cant find anything about this bell in the instructions or FAQ (unless I have missed it).

This allows you to "ring" someone. Select the player, push the ring. He will hear a beep and see "Yann is ringing you" in the chat.

No, you can use the "ringing" to get the attention of a player who isn't looking at the chat window...say I have the game open but I'm just surfing the internet. You can get my attention (as long as my volume is up) by ringing me. It's a very useful feature!

It was a very useful feature during closed beta, when fewer people were online. You opened the game, saw nobody there, surfed the net or watched tv until someone got online, he ringed you and you could start playing.
Also useful if you plan on meeting someone, and the last one to arrive ring the other and then the game is on.

Thanks for explaining that. I kept clicking on the bell and waiting for a food pellet to come out of my computer.

You'll only hear the bell is someone is trying to get a hold of you. If I'm trying to ring another player you won't even know it's happening...so unless we have players ringing everyone just for the fun of it, you won't hear many 'bells'.
