Re:Fun Tournament 2010 Mon, 22 November 2010 16:13
JenAck and I began the tourney minutes ago!

JenAck 2- Lcremita 3

SNAKE: 129-123 *
5TIXS: * 139-152
8 NO MORE: 118-132*
OPENDRAW: *110-091
NO 5/6: 085-101

Really was fun.

SNAKE:

She started with 6 blacks. She made a nice route in all south for climb up to north by Tor-ssm for end in Winnipeg

The first move of game was my 5 whites. I made a route for my Port-Nasv,Port-Pho with 5 whites, yellows, purples and oranges with 6 blues. (3 whites until Nashville) for a road of 44. In her last turn she tracked 4 locos for got Helena and tie lr.

I forced to draw only got den-elpaso.

5TIXS:

In first draw I keep Ny-Atlanta and Ssm-nasv (2). In second draw I keep Mon-No and Cal-slc (for not to force a 4th draw :s) (4) In the third draw I got La-Mia,La-Chi and Den-Pitt!!
I decide to take em all and be a bit flexible in strategy (7)
Got em all less Cal-Slc

JenAck had nice tixs also included La-Ny and Van-Mon. I think she miss 1 of 5 tixs also (den-paso)

8 NO MORE:

In the beggining of game I did a fault (got 11 tixs)! so forced
to draw find the perfect one for my route (La-chi)!. I had La-Ny, Den-Pitt and Dul-paso.

Only 1 6er in game (my 6 blacks in middle of game)

OPENDRAW:

Surely I made a mistake trying to block her with greens in greys at end of game resigning y possible lr. She manage a brilliant double loop in north and south for force 5th game

NO 5/6:

A bit blocks in North inclined game and match for me.

Thanks Jen for explanations, patience and sorry game for the fault.

Gl in next matches!

Re:Need Stronger penalty! Tue, 23 November 2010 20:27
Dom, We need stronger Penalties!

1 ticket is not enough of a penalty for people not following rules on these variants. It needs to go to 2.

As happened often last year, calling a penalty hurts the player calling the penalty. Gee, how harmful is it to call a penalty which causes your opponent to have to take one ticket which they have time to complete and then beat you by having the extra ticket! Meanwhile I am drawing open on the pile and getting 5 singles at end of game so I cannot complete the game. IN regular 2 player, the locos make a difference in people going out easier, thus taking extra ticket is more tricky and so it happens later. But with that variant, one does not have loco luxury.

Maybe 1 ticket is fine in snake and perhaps 5 tix variants, but with the other 3, it really is not a penalty. This is especially true in draw open because that one is hard to watch while you are playing your game and figuring out your tracks. Meanwhile they get locos!. Also hard to know if 8+ means a person has 9, 10, or 11. So catching that one is tricky as well.

Maybe it is too late for this year for this rule change, but please put it in for next year.

Re:Need Stronger penalty! Tue, 23 November 2010 23:25
@Onyx:

I think it depends, how you see this event.

Is it part of the fun to risk penalties?
Many ways -
a) the opponent doesn't notice and you get away with it
b) the penalty turns out to be not so bad for you after all (a bit like casino, isn't it?)
c) the win you achieve by violating the rules is so big that you don't care about your penalty (yes, you can "block" in snake Wink )

I think, that's a big part of the fun.
The variants themselves are not sooooooo cool, but if you can legally be nasty, well, that's something you don't have in "normal" tournaments. Twisted Evil

Seeing it that way, I'm quite happy with the rules as they are.
But of course you are right if one sees it differently.
What does everybody else think?
(besides, yes, it's too late for this year - but always worth discussing for the next)

@Dea & Hecki, First, yes I tend to be a rule keeper. And to me part of the Fun is to live within the rules of the FUN tournament, not take advantage of the other who is living within the rules. So my point follows part of what you say:
If Part of the fun is to risk penalties, then make them penalties.
Because in the open draw, if I know near the end I am going to pick up tix anyway on next turn, might as well take from pile when my colors are not out there, and could get locos. Heck, I only need to keep one ticket, and I probably have it made or can make one of them easy enough. But if I had to keep 2, then I might think longer about penalty of having to take tix. With only having to keep 1, 'penalty risk' is not enough.

Perhaps, and I submit this is true for games 8+, and Opendraw, it is not a penalty but an advantage. In 8+, big advantage to getting longer track points and thus more tickets made in less turns.
By the way, basically these advantage reasons were why we went to 2 tix penalty for no 5/6 game, because playing a 5/6 during the game was worth more than one ticket possibly missed, and the bonus fact: I complete my tickets if blocked out. I still think 2 may not be enough there, especially given that if one almost cheats there, they can get say 15 bonus plus completing a large ticket when blocked out of say LA-NY, so it becomes a 57 point swing. Better to do that, cause no way does one lose even 40 points in 2 tickets. (15 + 21 + not -21)

Should we take this to a separate thread?

Re:Need Stronger penalty! Wed, 24 November 2010 07:15
i think that both ways of thinking and arguing (dea/hecki & onyx) have their points
(besides i want to watch the match/wear as well, even if i have to make a sermon out of it afterwards)

for my part i would twist the rule of Penalty a little bit for next year, that i say Penalty immediately but its the descision of the deceived player to decide when the other person has to take it (draw the ticket not immediately but at that point of the game when it is convenient Twisted Evil gg)
i would say it adds to the fire and both sides can take into consideration the value of taking the penalty or playing legally

snake: 107-109 (start allowed me perfect 45 track)
