What expansions to get next? Mon, 20 December 2010 18:01
Hello all,

We have been enjoying M44 alittle over a year now. We really love the game as it is easy and fun. My opponents are usually my two sons (13 and 14) or some other friends.

This is what I have aquired up to this point:
M44 Basic game x2
Terrain Pack
Overlord
Eastern Front Expansion x2(1 is incomplete, but has all the troops)
Campaign Bag with Breakthrough scenario map
Desert/Winter Maps
Tigers in the Snow scenario

This is what I hope to get in the near future:
Med exapansiom
Winter Wars
Breakthrough Expansion

Assuming I aquire the above, what would be your next move?

I keep looking at the Air pack, but we are enjoying the game so far without it. Is there a reason to get this before other items?

Pacific Expansion- I would like to play some of these sceanrios and it would complete all the currently available armies.

I definately will pick up one or more of the other scenarios as time goes by as we really like the ease of set up with the pre-printed maps.

If you owned what we do what would be next on your list of wants and why?

I ask now because after x-mas I have a B-day at the end of the month. In addition, I have a store credit buring a hole in my pocket. Wink

TIA,

Hi,

Definitally the Air Pack :
1) Playing with the planes is rockin' good.
2) With the Air Pack come a pile of cards with the rules on.
Handy !

Thanks, I noticed this with the Tigers in the Snow sceanrio that it refers to cards for troops that must be in the Air Pack.

Yep the various cards in the Air pack are really useful. When playing a scenario you just through out the ones relevant to the scenario and they serve as easy reference for all the terrain, troop, nation etc questions. But I dont like the Air rules, adds complexity without much benefit

However, I would have to say breakthrough has re invigorated my love of M44. the depth of the board allows more time for strategy...too often in the standard scenarios and overlord you are just rushing to get your troops to safety or to somewhere they can retreat from.

So given you have a breakthrough map, I'd go for Winter Wars which gives you the breakthrough deck and speeds things up a little. It also gives you some more terrain (although all white!) and some more rules around Tank Destroyers, Mortars and MAchine guns etc

Personally I wouldnt bother with the med pack. The scenarios are on line if you want to play them and the figures and tanks are poorly designed. The Brits have the wrong helmets, and dont look like brits, the tanks are too small and have too many wheels.

Hi.
Personally I would go for Pacific before Med, as I like the scenarios in Pacific better, but Breakthrough and Winter Wars are no brainers.
Not saying you shouldn't buy Med, but I prefer the scenarios in Pacific. I don't mind the sculpts in the Med. If that is something you care about only you can answer, but to me the scenarios and the new rules offered by the Med makes it a valuable addition to the collection.

Beyond this you mention the Air Pack. The reference cards are a gem. The scenario book gives you plenty of scenarios to play/revisit.
The Air Rules. I like them, and think they add a new strategic depth to Memoir. Using them efficiently is challenging and worth it to me. In campaign play they can be used to reduce the enemy reserves near the baselines, and their "Flags can't be ignored" is powerful against Dug In units.
And the Air Pack is not getting easier to find, so buy it now if you can.

Since you play mainly versus your sons, I would say you shold look into the Campaign Book. A great way to play the standard scenarios. And you have everything you need to fully enjoy it, except the Air Pack.

So you should be getting.

Winter Wars(Must buy)
Breakthrough Kit (Must buy)

Pacific Theater
Med. Theater (Your choice between these two, or hold until they are supported in Hopefully Campaign Book Volume 2)Althouh you will get use out of these in the Air Pack and Breakthrough Kit.

Air Pack (Out of Print, get it now.)

Campaign Book Vol. 1 (Really a good way to get more use out of basegame, terrain pack, Eastern Front, Winter/desert board and the Air Pack(if you get it)

Beyond this
Vercors Camapign(downloadable on DOW.com) 5 very good scenarios.

Battlemaps (Hedgerow, Sword and Disaster) great to play overlord, but you can make do without these if you don't play overlord. (The trucks form Hedgerow are used in the Breakthrough Kit, but can be proxied easily with a badge. Half-Tracks from Disaster are used in Winter Wars, but badges are provided for those that doesn't own the Disaster battlemap.)

That turned to be a longer post than planned, sorry.

Thanks for all the tips....I did not know Air Pack was OoP two stores in town have it in stock at a discount.

I do not play M44 for figure quality, but appreciate the tip. The reason I was thinking Med first is the MArketgarden sceanrio has the Brits and I enjoyed the N.A. history as well. I am sure I will eventually get Pacific as well.

We also play/collect Axis and Allies Minis, so M44 is a great lite game for us. My 14 yr old annoucned he likes it the best. Getting a 14 yr old who is heavily involved in other activities to take time to game with you is an accomplishment, so I plan to take advantage why I can.

Appreciate all the tips and suggestions.

Great question, Aaron. I basically agree with everything ad79 just said, but I'll put a slightly different spin on things.

If you've been ogling the Air Pack, I agree, buy it first, because it's currently out of print. It literally adds a new dimension to the game. It also includes revised versions of nearly all the official scenarios that came before it, making them new all over again.

Breakthrough is wonderful, but be aware that it lengthens the game. If you currently average an hour for a game, Breakthroughs will average twice as long. If that's not a problem, go for it! And yes, get Winter Wars, because the Breakthrough deck is a brilliant addition. The winter Combat deck adds a rich, strategic dimension, too, which your young recruits are just the right age for.

If you like the Russians-versus-Germans, Sword of Stalingrad has some great scenarios, and it also has a Combat deck (for urban scenarios).

Also in the Russians vs Germans mode, Campaign Book 1 includes a fresh Eastern Front campaign, in addition to that notion of being able to play an extended series of battles. One other nice thing about the special Campaign rules is that each the scenarios are a little different every time you play them.

Alternatively, if you might be interested in a little more variety, branch out into one of the other fronts. I agree with ad79 that Pacific has more interesting scenarios than Mediterranean. Pacific includes special rules for the Marines (who get to order an extra unit on most cards) and Japanese (who have several special abilities). Also, you'll find some fresh terrain types that don't exist in any of the other fronts. Mediterranean is fine, but to me, Pacific is special.

Basically, all of the expansions are good. It's just a matter of which direction you'd like your next step to be in.

The airpack may be out of print but you can still find it on Ebay for the standard price. Right now there are 4 auctions listing it for around $33-40.

You ain't just whistlin dixe brother! There is so much good stuff added to the base game that one can be as creative as one feels like and not run out of things to do. No doubt there will be more in the new year to wow us along and keep things interesting! Wish TOI could even come close to this kind of support but that isn't going to happen anytime soon.

Memoir is the place to be!

To figure out what expansion you want next, it might be good to see what terrain and rules each expansion brings to your game. For this I have created a file that explains each expansion. It is available here http://www.daysofwonder.com/en/mypage/272628/m44/story#_inde x_18 at almost the very end. I hope this helps!

This question comes up on these boards about every month or two. The usual consensus is to get the expansion that deals with a part of the war that interests you. If you've just watched Spielberg's *The Pacific,* you probably want to get that expansion. If you've been watching (or reading) *Enemy at the Gates,* the Eastern Front or Sword of Stalingrad may be more your thing.

Good luck and happy gaming!

I stopped by the LGS last night and they did hae AIR Pack in stock. With my discount I shelled out $32 and grabbed it since it was not on any gift wish list for my family.

We will see what X-mas and my B-day bring and go from there. Definately have enought o keep us busy for awhile.

Appreciate all the feedback.

I've been reading "The Last Year of the German Army" by James Lucas, so what should I be playing? Why Winter Wars silly! Just kidding! Check out the expansions and get the one that caters to your favorite theater.
