Wonderful Discovery! Thu, 13 January 2011 15:33
To the folks at Days of Wonder:

My heartfelt thanks for creating this awesome game experience. I have been a long time boardgamer/computer gamer, preferring the "beer and pretzels" style games over the complicated game systems. I own several Days of Wonder board games, including Ticket to Ride, Battlelore, Coliseum, and Shadows Over Camelot. Although Battlelore is effectively the same game system, we have had a hard time getting into it for some reason. Because of that I have avoided the Memoir '44 game. Well, after trying Memoir '44 Online I feel like I have been missing out on a great game.

First comment: THANK YOU! for writing the game in Java so that it runs on multiple platforms. My household runs Linux, Mac's, and Windows. I know Java is not the best development environment for graphically rich games, but I think the platform independence that you get was a wise investment. TTR Online is the same way, so I hope you continue to develop future games this way.

Next, I think the achievements and promotions are a great addition to the game. It gives you something to shoot for, and incentive to fight some of the tougher battles. The ranking system is also very good, letting you see where you stand.

Game play is fast and furious, but does require planning and patience. I learned that after getting thumped for the first 20 battles or so. Luck plays a big part in the game, but it does so in real life as well. That being said, you can still win a game that looks lost. I did that twice yesterday by retrenching after an initial assault and patiently pressing little advantages in unit concentration, terrain, and command card mix. I know these comments are targeted toward the game system and not just the online game, but I do think the speed of play and reduced setup time offered by the online game allows us newbies to digest the strategies more quickly. Bravo Mr. Borg.

In terms of bugs, I have only had a few disconnnects happen, and 2 lock up's. I don't know how to diagnose the exact cause of these things, but I'd be glad to support a report if it can help. I work in the software industry, so I know that reporting a bug with no data points doesn't help anything. Is there a log file or something I should send in?

Lastly... I have a few enhancement requests for future releases. I read on the website about the Campaign add on. I think this would be a great enhancement to the online product. I'd also like to see some type of "metagame", in which the allies and axis battle for control of territory using the scenarios to determine territory ownership. We can do this without changes to the software itself (there are external leagues and ladder solutions), but reporting results and scheduling battles can be tedious.

Again, great game. I immediately bought the Major Pack of gold ingots and have ordered the board game itself with the store credit. Great idea DoW. I hope the game is hugely successful and that you keep bringing us new gems like this.

Well, after trying Memoir '44 Online I feel like I have been missing out on a great game.

This is a great game, so I'm glad you finally discovered it! It's better late than never. Smile I stumbled onto this game through my brother-in-law and have loved my experience with it ever since...

On the Memoir '44 Online web site there is a Bug Report Form that you should use to report any bugs. It should walk you through what to include, where to find it, and how to log the issues you discover. All of the bugs can be reported through the form so that they can be inserted into a list of things to work on for the development crew.

Have fun and welcome again! I'll look for you on the battle field!! Cool
