I don't know if this is the correct forum or not but if anyone from days of wonder happens to read this I'd like to give a little feedback on M44 online.

I'd suggest a better implementation of the ambush card. If you have the ambush card the timing seems very picky as far as when you can play it. I've lost games because I can't get the card to work, let alone this dead weight sitting in my deck. I've got two suggestions on improving this.

One is build in a slight delay in combat resolution by default. That way you could alert the player with the card that they can use it (flash it, or a sound). If the delay that it takes to process this event is built in by default then the other player would not know the player has the card. Otherwise if a delay existed you'd know the guy has the card.

The other way might be to allow the combat dice to be rolled and stored and used as the unit's attack after the ambush. But that's kind of a rule variation.

On another issue is the gold system. I understand that you need to make some money at this but playing the online version if you own the boxed game should give you some perks. I mean something like free vs mode against the computer or something. I know you get 100 free gold but I just feel kind of cheated. Especially since I can't download the scenario editor for free, as advertised in my box.

But other then that the game play is SWEET! Very well implemented.

Although not a part of the development team I still feel like sharing my thoughts here too. Indeed the current implementation of the Ambush card is not ideal. The same time the suggested solution to have a default delay for attach does not seem sensible - why need to delay anything? Delay is always an annoying thing.

My thought is to tweak Ambush functionality in this way:

1. Player activates the card before his rival turn (no changes here, it is already in place).
2. Player marks a unit he/she wants to ambush during movement phase but is allowed to mark also during battle phas (for the case when an opposite player does not want to move at all or movement was too short).
3. If player marked unit but for some reason ambush is not possible (for example, multiple units are attacking and the marked unit is not the first to attack the same time previous attacks force the ambushing unit to retreat) user is still able to revert intention and mark a different unit.
4. As long as unit is marked and ambush is possible, ambush is played automatically before attack starts.

This is probably is not the best approach as well but it puts more control over the process. IMHO.

I'm actually happy about the way Ambush works. I find that I can "load" or "unload" the card in the middle of the opponent's turn, and more or less get right unit to use the ambush.

As for the Gold Ignots. I think it would be nice to get a certain amount of GIs for buying "physical" products - especially since this might lure more people to play the game both on- and off-line.

I agree...I find that the Ambush card behaves very well and I think the tweaks that DoW have made to the mechanic really show. It's much better than when we were playing in closed beta!! Smile

I think the 10% discount that we get for buying the base game and the Pacific Theater expansion kind of do this already (except the codes can be used for anything), but it's true that we don't get any benefit for buying little expansions like the Terrain Pack...but how would we get a discount without the code anyway? I have to disagree about the Ambush card. It is very difficult at certain times to activate the Ambush card when playing solo. The one situation that has hit me over and over is the turn after drawing the Ambush card.

This is how the solo game works now in certain situations: You draw the Ambush card and then the computer takes its turn immediately. The computer doesn't always take its turn immediately, but often it does, without any built-in delay. When this happens, there is no amount of clicking on the Ambush card that will activate it before the computer takes its turn. So, I would say at least 75% of the time, the Ambush card cannot be used on the turn after it is drawn when playing the computer.

There should always be a minimum delay that the computer adds between turns when the Ambush card is in the hand of the human opponent, or at least on the turn the Ambush card is drawn. A delay of 1 second might be enough and would not be too onerous, given that on occasion I have waited as much a 5 minutes for the computer to take its turn.

I reported this bug at least a month ago so maybe its already been addressed.

But I have to add, there is another problem with the Ambush card implementation regarding choice of attacking unit to ambush.

This has happened to me several times: I have an ambush card, it is activated, and the opponent attacks a weak unit of mine (e.g., 1-2 infantry figures) in close assault with two of the opponent's units. The computer chooses not to ambush on the first attack and of course my unit is destroyed before it can ambush the second unit. Of course, I wanted the ambush to occur on the first attack. There are several reasons why you might want this: (1) I want to do SOME damage before my unit is eliminated (2) I need to get rid of the Ambush card because I only have 4 cards total and need the extra card ASAP, (3) I am one medal away from losing and the Ambush is my only chance to survive.

At least once, all of the reasons were relevant and the Ambush card could not be used because of a poor implementation.

This needs to be worked out before I can say Ambush works well. One solution is to allow a slight delay for the ambushing user to change the ambush target. This might tip the opponent off that ambush is in play, but this could be an option and is preferable to no ambush and a game loss in this situation.

Hey Sgt Storm,

I'm assuming that you've played the game recently and had these problems since the latest update...but I thought it might be worth checking because they did improve the Ambush card in this last beta version!

Now when I have the ambush card and two enemy units might be attacking me, I see the "!" on both enemy units and it has always Ambushed the first attack. This is a huge improvement from before and has fixed a lot of problems.

I agree that especially when playing Johnny, it's often impossible to Ambush the turn after you draw the card and that's something that should be fixed. I don't know if it's already fixed because I haven't run into that situation recently...but I'm sure it's on the list of things to modify.

I sometimes have to remember that with the Ambush card, I'm quite satisfied with how it works (even if it isn't perfect) because in closed beta it still had some issues! So from my point of view it's working like a dream... Cool But I do realize there is probably still room for improvement. Razz

I haven't had time to play recently, so its probably fixed as you say (given reported the problem to the developers in December).
