DOW is such a class act... They get it. They care about the M44 community no matter where we are. And they realize that Vassal is more of a gateway to them, than an alternative to them.
Bravo...

Thank goodness. I just joined vassal a couple of weeks ago. However, it looks like Expert Mode may take a lot of play away from it, though I haven't tried an Overlord game yet on Vassal. I can't wait to try Expert Mode tonight.

As one of the more prolific members of both the Vassal and M-Online communities, I totally agree with you Randwulf. I applaud the tremendous job they're doing with M-Online, and I equally applaud their recognition of the value that Vassal brings to them.

I've never played Vassal so I have no other system to compare Memoir '44 Online to...so for those people who have played a lot of both (Sam, stevens, etc) do you think we'll see an even split between the two online systems?
Will one scratch an itch that the other can't, or will they simply be alternatives for each other? What do you guys think?

I have played some on vassal, and more on M-online, but 2 days ago I stayed at a hotel that didn't have wireless internet access on the rooms, and in such times, vassal's ability to let me solo a game came in handy. I tried Omaha with "On the Move" orders on the cards. vassal works great for solo sessions.
BUT, M-online is easier when it implements rules and it has the terrain cards linked to the hex.

I'll let you know after I've spent some time exploring Expert Mode. In the mean time, here are some quick thoughts.
One huge advantage M-Online brings to the table, even before the introduction of Expert Mode, is the much larger number of players and available opponents. Sometimes, Vassal has no opponents for hours at a time.
On the other hand, Vassal allows you to run a logfile of your game (which you can name and save), save your game in the middle to resume at a later date, and play by email. Unless I've missed something, I don't think Expert Mode has these at the moment.

Hi Stig, thanks for your thoughts. I'm not clear on how Vassal works when you play a solo game without being online...I didn't know you could do that.

As a quick heads-up to everyone, I've played Expert Mode against a few Vassal players and they've said things like, "This action is so much easier on Vassal" or "Why is this so much more complex than Vassal?". I don't actually think Expert Mode is harder to learn or that the controls are counter-intuitive (I think the opposite is actually true...the controls are quite simple) but it's a new system and it's different than Vassal so it takes some getting used to.
So for people who already know Vassal, don't judge Expert Mode after only one or two tries (which I'm sure you weren't planning to do, Sam).

Yes, waiting for opponents would be very frustrating! We had the same kind of problem when we first started to test Memoir '44 Online because there were so few closed beta testers; it wasn't fun waiting for people to come online!

You are correct; Memoir '44 Online does not allow you to stop your game in the middle of a battle in any mode and I haven't heard of any plans to implement a play by mail system of any kind. For people who like this kind of game-play, it sounds like Vassal is the only option.
Thanks for the thoughts so far!

Try as I might, after I load the M44 module on Vassal, I can't get the scenarios to load or play.
I play M44 online here alot, but would like to try some of the other stuff from M44 on Vassal.
I have not had any trouble with Command and Colors, Ancients--either the module or the scenarios.
Any suggestions? Thanks

Fardog, I don't know whether CC:A and Memoir are set up similarly on Vassal, but when people are having problems getting Memoir scenarios to work it's usually for the same reason:
In the same folder where you have the Memoir module (Memoir44vX), you need to create a sub-folder named Memoir44vX_ext . The module looks for scenarios specifically in a subfolder by that name, so if it's in a different place or named differently, it won't find them.
Good luck, have fun, and I hope to see you there!

One big advantage in Vassal is one need not worry about accidentally clicking "Moves Done" as Mem Online .
I did this a few times - once with a 4 tank Armor Assault - so what should have been a devasting attack on my opponent with at least 16 close assault dice (and probably more with OR attack) turned into two 3d attacks

Nothing personal Dietrich. I just have never played you in a game of Memoir'44 on Vassal. But I am always willing to start. Have you considered joining us in our ongoing ladder tournament?

I was just kidding.
I haven't played on vassal before. And because of lack of spare time I think it's better not to start with it; the wife you know
Thanks for the invitation anyway. Hope to meet you soon on the "normal M44 battlefield".
