M44 Online Beta 16 Fri, 28 January 2011 13:59
Dear Memoir '44 Online Officer:

We are happy to report that we released the Beta 16 version of the software.

Introducing the Expert Mode

The most visible improvement for those who have purchased a Captain Pack or Major Pack will be the Expert mode, introduced in this beta.

The purpose of the Expert mode is to let you let you play any scenario ever designed for Memoir '44 that we haven't had a chance to code the rules for yet! Eventually, this will also come to include any scenario you may have designed yourself using the Scenario Editor and that you decide you may want to make playable in Expert mode.

For this first beta release, we have voluntarily restrained the number of scenarios playable in Expert mode; the scenarios offered should nonetheless give you a good feel for how things work in this part of the game.

The Expert mode is, in some ways, the closest way to mimic playing the actual board game. Rules are not enforced by the computer. Instead, you need to know them. In addition, all manipulations are done by hand, rather than automatically for you.

We still use the computer to simplify your life whenever possible (game set-up, etc...) but let us repeat:
- knowledge of the rules is essential (hence the "Expert" moniker)
- so is fair-play in adjudicating the rules and a game's results
- all manipulations (movement, number of dice rolled, figures removed...) need to be done by you the player, since the computer has NO knowledge whatsoever in this mode of the Special or "House" rules the scenario might rely on

As such it is IMPERATIVE THAT YOU READ THE DOCUMENTATION RELATED TO THE EXPERT MODE BEFORE TRYING A GAME. Download it from http://cdn0.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/en/img/M44-Expe rtManual-0.3.pdf

Otherwise, we guarantee you will be lost and confused as to how things work! You will miss out on key features such as the Features Pop-up Menu, you won't understand how to perform basic tasks such as Armor Overrun or Ignoring a Retreat, etc...

So please take the time to read the documentation before jumping right in!
Once you've read the doc, a variety of Eastern Front, Pacific Theater and Mediterranean Theater scenarios await you. There is also a Breakthrough version of Sword Beach thrown in for good measure, for the hardcore players among you!

Please note:

- This is the first release of the Expert Mode. Even if we tested it as much as we could, it is likely that you will uncover problems. Please report them using the bug report form at http://www.daysofwonder.com/en/contact/sublevel/?entry_id=23 0
Thanks in advance for your help and understanding!

- When you see the list of players in the Operations Headquarters screen, you can display only the ones who have the Expert Mode activated on their accounts using the "Show" filter. This will allow you to invite other Expert players easily.

- The Ambush card can cause difficulties when played too late during your opponent's attack: you would have to completely "undo" the previous action, restoring units, etc. Although it is technically possible with the Expert Mode features, it is very tedious. Therefore, we temporarily removed the card from the deck by default. If you really want to use it, go to the Deck Customization tab in the Scenario Briefing screen, and put it back (it's the last item in the Command Cards list). The next release will bring a more satisfactory user interface for the Ambush card.

- The Combat Deck, Russian Commander Rules and Night Visibility Rules are not implemented yet. So don't try using them.

- All Expert scenarios cost 1 GI to play, regardless of Front, format or rules.

- Those of you who played on VASSAL will also be pleased to know that we have revisited our position on the subject and that we now have no intent to curtail play on that platform, for those who like it.

Great! But I don't care about the Expert mode. Is there anything else in this release for me?

- Rematch button: it is now easy to play a rematch game after a first game. In the bottom right corner of the battle end screen, click the Rematch button, and voilà! We plan to create a special AAR screen at the end of the second battle, so that you will be able to compare and add up the two battles. This will come in a future release.

- The Memoir '44 Online Web site has a new page: the Career Page. This page is like your personal war diary. It shows the list of your battles in chronological order (most recent first), with your Achievements and Officer promotions. You may also use this page to see the history of other players - or brag about your latest victory.
Go to http://www.memoir44-online.com/ and click on your officer insignia.

What's Coming Next?

First of all a BIG DISCLAIMER: This is development Software, and what is worse, Beta Software. So while we believe what follows to be the most accurate description of our development plans and status as of this date, some things might still go wrong: as a result there could still be a difference between what we plan to do and hope to accomplish at any point in time, and what we will actually be able to deliver over the next few months, in terms of timing and features...

- The Operations Headquarters screen is still separated for the Expert Mode, so you have to go back to the main menu to switch between the Expert and the Standard/Solo Modes. We plan to merge everything into the same screen in the near future, so that you can toggle between Standard and Expert scenarios with a single click.

- We are currently implementing the special rules that are needed for the other Fronts. It is a long and difficult process, but this continuing effort will allow us to release new scenarios for Solo and Standard modes on a regular basis. Far from slowing us down, the development of the Expert mode is a necessary first step in that process. So even though the present release contains no new Standard scenarios, do not lose heart! More are coming in future releases.

- We are also making good progress on the Memoir '44 Editor (version 1.1). This is the version that will allow you to play-test your own Scenarios from the Front in Expert Mode, and allow you make them available for others to play with if you wish to. This is also the version that will include support for the newest game elements introduced in the recently released Memoir '44 Winter Wars expansion.

- French players (we know there are many among you) should have a French version in one or two releases. Merci pour votre patience.

In the meantime, enjoy the current release and keep those reports coming!

How to upgrade?

It is very simple, just launch the game. After you log in, it will detect the new version and offer to download it. Make sure you do so. Then follow the instructions that appear on your screen.

If you have problems, you can always go to http://www.memoir44-online.com and download the software again. Nothing will be lost, since all your profile is stored in your DoW Online account.

Details of improvements and bug fixes:

- Expert Mode with new scenarios.
- Rematch button.
- Some players could not become Major.
- Arnhem Bridge is now open again!
- Some usability issues were fixed.
- Other various fixes.

And as always:

A big THANK YOU to everyone who play and/or send us bug reports.

Make sure you stay tuned on the Memoir '44 Online forum:
http://www.daysofwonder.com/en/thread/?frm_id=71

And above all, have fun!

What does the white asterisk in the lobby mean?

Does it indicate players playing in expert mode?

I would assume so. It's a good way to see who's playing Expert at any given time. Cool

Is there separate points scoring (and points table) for expert mode?

I noticed after my first double game (Gates of Moscow) that the points shown did not match my online points.

Also service record in game didn't show results of expert mode games.

My understanding is that at this point there will be no points given, no medals awarded, and no charts showing the results of the Expert Mode games. There are just too many crazy rules, random winning conditions, etc for the team to be able to assign points for victories or anything like that.

You play Expert Mode for the enjoyment of playing new scenarios, house rules, and scenarios from the front...not for points and standings! Smile
