Best expansion? Wed, 02 February 2011 06:41
I own the board game and have been playing Memoir '44 Online.

What is the best expansion pack? Eastern Front, Mediterranean Theater, and Campaign book look most interesting to me.

Opinions?

The "best" is a very subjective term.

A common expansion to buy is the terrain pack.
The Air Pack is "out of print" so get it quick if you can.

Otherwise what theatre of operations interest you and those whom you play with?

If I could do it all over again (and I would), my first expansion would be The Terrain Pack.
I can't explain it well in English, but I think that the TP gives the Game the most new possibilities for a new player.
What I personnally find the BEST expansion ,

....

I don't know ; I kinda like them all.

I personally love the figures and scenarios in Eastern Front...

So there, 3 people - 3 different answers Smile

Not a lot of help, really...

I would go with Eastern Front- Terrain Pack will give you lots of options in time, but on its own, its very limited (unless you like playing lots of SFTF, in which case it's great)

Re:Best expansion? Wed, 02 February 2011 13:30
Having only recently started collecting the game myself i have been lucky enough to be able to purchase most of the the expansions already

Each expansion has it's own merits but from my point of view the expansions that i would get first are the ones that are out of print and will be soon almost impossible to purchase

I can imagine that if you are serious about building up the complete set over time, to find that you cannot get hold of one oe two expansions would be very frustrating!

So my order of buying would be

Air pack
Very limited availability - which contains some very nice figures and extermily helpful rules cards to assist in your game play

Campaign book
Excellent if you can find some opponents nearby who have the time available to play a proper linked campaign

The 4 battle maps (used in overlord games)
Again some very limited availability.

Although you may not yet be contemplating the multiplayer expansion these map sets come with additionasl figures and card sets which i think are an excellent complement to the looks and feel of the game.

Terrain pack
No problems with availability yet
This set is quite high on the list simply because a large number of the newer scenarios require the terrain freatures included

If you are serious about expanding your collection then you will need this pack.

Troops (Russian British and Japanese)
The order you buy these in, depends on your own personnel interests but the pacific pack is now proving be be the most difficult to aquire so perhaps you might consider this one first.

Hope the above is of use to some people

Thanks for the suggestions. Probably most interested in Eastern Front and desert warfare. Do I need the winter/desert board too in addition to the expansion? What do you guys like/dislike about campaign book?

My problem is finding opponents - I'm trying to get my boys into it (I have four) but they'd rather play Xbox! But they like board games and like Memoir 44. Just need to get them more hooked...

I had only let my kids watch tv or play twitch games on the weekends. School nights after homework was reading books or board games... it made them use their brains, and their grades were better. They are now grown and very smart. And my son loves Memoir44 Battlelore and Battlecry.

as for best??? I am with Stevens on this, the one I am playing at any given time.

Yep north of Milwaukee. Grew up in Minneapolis though so I root for the wrong football team, but I'll put that aside and pull for the Pack this weekend (heck, I've lived here over a decade!).

Randwulf - I'm totally with ya. No video or computer games during the school week and on weekends they are strictly monitored. We really encourage reading, board games, Legos, playing outside, competitive sports, etc.

As a new player I read this thread with interest as to what I should buy next.
I bought memoir44 3 month ago and its now a game I play on a regular basis with my friends.
My buying now has based on what my local hobby store has in stock( I believe in supporting them as they give me a place to play and meet new people) I so far have the basic game, plus Air pack , the Pacific pack and the Mediterranean Pack.
I been wondering on what to ask them to get when I am finishing buying what they have in stock. I so far have just ask them for the Winter/desert map .

Hey guys,

For those of you wondering what to buy next, there are a few documents you might find useful on people's User Pages:

1) ad79 - he has a very useful document that explains what each expansion requires or builds on from the ones before. This will help you know if you're about to buy something that can't be fully enjoyed without several other expansions. Here's a link to his User Page. Look for the "Memoir '44: Required Expansions" project.

2) 50th - he has a list of expansions that provides a good overview of what each expansion offers and might be helpful for determining what you would be buying. Here's a link to his User Page. Look for the "Memoir '44 Expansions List" project.

Good luck in your decisions! Don't stress too much over it because there's really not a bad choice...it's a win/win situation for you!! Cool

Note, these aren't new scenarios. The Air Pack reprinted all official scenarios to date (date Air Pack was released) with air rules where appropriate and in some cases additional terrain details using available terrain. The scenarios were from the base game, terrain pack, eastern front, pacific and other official scenarios published in magazines etc.

Nicely done but I'm already confused. I need the Terrain Pack for the Eastern Front Expansion but not the Mediterranean Expansion? That doesn't make sense to me.

Come on Randwulf, one copy of everything isn't enough. Very Happy Shocked Laughing Shocked Very Happy
You need two base games. Several packs of cards and sets of dice. Two sets of winter/desert boards and breakthrough boards.

One isn't nearly enough, two is better, .....

My document shows what is needed to play all the scenarios in that expansion without proxying anything.

Eastern Front has 1 scenario (Bug River) that uses tiles from the Terrain Pack.

Mediterranean Theater doesn't have scenarios that use tiles from the Terrain Pack.

Med. Theater needs Winter/desert board to look very good as does Eastern Front.

Did that make it clearer?

I said it was the wrong speech.... Twisted Evil

I got three base games and one of everything else plus a couple of extra sets of cards and dice ( Ebay ) of course all the boards... I have extra figs from TOI (again Ebay) and other stuff.

I even made a 4x6 foot board for use at Con's that use's really cool terrain all scaled to micro armor. Got lots of tanks and infantry based on pennys...

I guess what he may need is an inoculation to keep him from spending so much money like so many of us... Rolling Eyes

I plan on getting them all. At present I can afford to buy one a month. Wife thinks paying the Mortgage and feeding the kids are more important then me buying games . Some people just dont have their priorities in life right

That's the spirit TM... Very Happy

But on the realistic side, look at cost.

How much do you spend on going to a movie??? it lasts how long? 2 hours??? you buy an expansion and it lasts how long???

How much enjoyment dollar for dollar???

Gaming has always been the best entertainment value.

I would say that any of the army packs are the best choice. New army, rules, terrain, scenarios. A little bit of everything, choose the army pack based on personal interest.

One a month is fine. Give me time to check out the new rules and scenarios before my next buy.
