Hi Sam.
A special Thanks to you for organizing the (16) overlord games,
Maybe you should also mention what version to use of vassal for people that like to join this battle.
Looking forward to it.

I've got Memoir 8.2, but got a message that Vassal wasn't the current model. Do I need to update it?

It would be a good time, to submit the upcoming version 10
a first endurance test,
because the Omaha Beach scenario is setup in the first preview version Smile

Maybe next time we can use 10. (I've had an early look at 10, and it has some nice, new features.)

But since everybody already has 8.x working on their computers, we'll keep things simple next weekend.

We'll be starting in about an hour.

Looks like there's still some room at the table, if you want to play with Tigers.

Re:Overlord on Vassal -- Saturday, February 12 -- Tigers in the Snow Sat, 12 February 2011 23:56
Another great battle. We played Europe against United States.

Axis CinC: JJAZ
FGs: Right-Sligogamer, center-Oleg, left-Bayernkini

Allied CinC: Tank Commander
FGs: Left-Gene, center-Tank Commander, right-sam1812

A few moments of spectacular luck for the Allies -- like building two pontoon bridges on the first turn, rolling 8 orders on a TFH (including 4 tanks and an artillery), then Gene's tank double-grenading a German artillery the following turn, me killing two Tigers in one turn, and a pair of 3d attacks whiffing against two very weak, exposed units of mine.

Final score in 10 turns: Axis wins 13-7. 46-43 figure count.

Thank you, everybody, for playing. Oleg and Sligo, welcome to Vassal Overlord!

How much did the strategy of your vassal game differed from this game by Oros?

A friend came over for som f2f Winter Wars action so I missed your game.

f2f beats vassal and M44Online everytime.

I love that strategy map, Oros! If I had a screenshot of a board, would I just use Draw/Paint software to do that? Or something else?

The verbal strategy map for our game is:

On turn 1, the Soviets built pontoon bridges behind the two hills and on their left/center seam. Most of the Soviet tanks eventually came over one or another of the bridges. They were fully responsible for 5 kills on the left and mostly responsible for 4 kills in the center. (The Russian infantry didn't push forward.)

On the opposite side of the board, the Tigers advanced directly to the Russian infantries in the woods. After the first wave was unsuccessful, a second wave of German armor moved forward toward the Russian infantry on that flank, and the Russian infantry came out to meet them. (Miraculously, no units were destroyed on either side in this second wave.)

In the center, German armor came out next to the town, and there were some clashes, mostly armor vs armor, but a couple of infantries were killed no each side, too.

Yes, that is the way to do it.

It really helps to get the Pontoon bridges up first turn on the Russian left.
Sounds like a fun game.

Re:Overlord on Vassal -- Saturday, February 12 -- Tigers in the Snow Mon, 14 February 2011 00:54
A full blown AAR of the event:

I was lucky to start an ATTACK card for both the left and center. I also had TFH, MOVE OUT and FIREFIGHT.

My first turn card play is a no brainer. Our right can do without a card this turn as there is no immediate danger so an Int roll will do there (but Sam's roll would cost him an Inf fig). Building two bridges so that our armor has options where they may cross and cross quickly seems to be the best course of action. Having 3 bridges up certainly dimishes the German threat to blow up a bridge and probably makes it less likely that they will attempt such an action (and during this game they did not). I also play a LEFT RECON in order to be able to draw 3 cards back into my hand.

The Germans start off with a bang as they play ARMOR ASSAULT on their left and advance 4 Tigers to fire at 3 hex range on the Russian infantry hiding in the woods. They pick on the 3 fig infantry and kill it off with four 1d attacks.

Seeing as the Tigers have closed the range, it looks like Sam needs a card this time around. I sort of hate to play my FIREFIGHT here but I like the idea of getting at least 9 shots vs the Tigers. I give the DHQ to Gene so that he can cross the river with his tanks. My INT roll is ARM so I order the tank on the left / center hex. Gene moves three of his tanks over the bridges and onto the hills - one into the center. Sam gets 3 hits with his 9 shots but all three rerolls miss. Two inf hits are made on our left and one in the center.

Johan plays another ARMOR ASSAULT on our left, a BEL in the center and an ASSAULT on our right. The Tigers shoot well - 6 hits with 9 shots -- and the Russian infantry over there is looking pretty sad. Meanwhile a center German baseline infantry moves up to attack the center Elite Tank on a hill but only gets 1 hit with 4 shots - it then moves into a woods hex near the center bridges. German infantry also go over to the attack on our left and try to push off our tanks on the hills. They force one tank back onto the bridge and then get 3 hits on the elite tank which cannot retreat - although there none are flag hits.

A critical phase of the battle is reached and I think it is time to pull out TFH and hope we get good order rolls. Gene gets to order 3 tanks - the center an Inf and tank and Sam on the right two arty and an Inf. Gene's first two 4d attacks get 3 hits on a PG infantry. A 4d OR attack then wipes out an infantry - nice shooting there!! Gene then picks off a 2 fig PG Inf in the woods with his last 2 rolls. I do a lot worse -- going 1 for 6 on the infantry in the woods hex by the bridge. I had hoped my infantry would have at least flagged its target out of the woods so that my tank would get a 4d attack on it - but it was not to be. Sam rolls 11 dice vs the Tigers and gets 6 hits but misses all the rerolls. However our Russians enjoy a 2 to 1 lead.

Johan then opts to play CA on our TFH. Only one of Michael's Tigers can be ordered along with 2 Inf which are of no real threat as they can only plod toward the front but cannot attack. Two Inf and an Arm are ordered in the center while an Inf and arty are ordered on the German right. We lose a 1 fig Inf on our right to a 2d Tiger attack. A center tank is missed with 7 rolls but an infantry is hit 3 times at range from a panzer which moved down the gap between Prekula and the woods. The 1 fig Elite Tank is blasted off the board by the arty. It is now a 3 to 2 German lead.

I give Sam the MOVE OUT - Gene a PINCER with 2 orders and my center gets an ASSAULT where I can order three tanks, two inf and one arty. I bring another tank across the river and setup what I hope will be three 1d attacks vs the 3 fig infantry in the woods by the bridge. I then swing a 2 fig tank to the right to engage the forward panzer. Gene misses two 1d attacks vs a 1 fig PG Inf but in between he wipes out an arty with 2d -- a double GRE roll which is the highlight of the game. Sam charges the Tigers with two infantry and gets 3 hits with 5 shots and finally nails one of them. I get one hit and a flag on the panzer. Then my first 1d attack vs the infantry in the woods rolls a flag and I lose two other shots vs it - dang. Five more dice with my tank get 1 hit. So far 2 for 12 vs than unit. After I drew my first card I noticed that we did not shuffle after either TFH - both CinCs forget to do this - so the deck is reshuffled at this point in time. The lead is back with the Russians 4 to 3.

That 1 fig PG Inf that was missed twice last turn now recovers 2 figs with a M & M card. The German center sees an ASSAULT card and the 3 Tigers roll. The Tigers go 1 for 10 vs our infantry. Two panzers advance in the center. I lose the 1 fig inf and 2 fig tank after it survived a 3d panzer attack to a 1d arty shot - damn - I had plans for that unit. The lead is now back to the Germans 5 to 4.

With 3 Tigers on the prowl and two of Sam's inf in the open I give Sam two PROBES. I play an ATTACK in the center as I must try and deal with those panzers. Gene's forces are in no real danger so he will have to roll for Int. Sam comes through big time - getting 4 hits with 10 shots and killing off 2 Tigers - wow!!! I have decided to gamble and split my tank units - one going after a weakened panzer with arty support and the other going after a 2 fig inf. I blast the 2 fig panzer off the board and my Elite Tank which goes hunting on the hills for the 2 fig infantry that got away last turn and now finishes it off. We now lead 8 to 5.

On the next German turn 2 hits are scorced with their arty vs the Elite Tank and a right infantry is hit twcie from the last Tiger.

I give each section a PROBE - time to widen our lead. Gene's 2 tank attack kills off a 3 fig PG Inf. I set up a two tank attack vs a 3 fig infantry - my first attack gets 3 hits but also a flag which takes it out of range of my other tank which then fires on a panzer but misses. Two hits on an inf from Sam's arty wrapes up the turn with a 9 to 5 Russ lead.

Johan plays BARRAGE along with a LEFT PROBE and DHQ in the center. The BARRAGE targets one of my center arty and gets a flag hit. A German 1 fig inf in Prekula moves to a woods hex on the German baseline. Arty kills off the 1 fig Elite tank and a panzer which moved onto the hill hex in front of the town gets 2 hits on my last tank. The Tiger gets 1 hit on a 2 fig inf and a 1d arty attack vs the same unit misses. A 9 to 6 game now.

I debate using my CA vs the DHQ or the BARRAGE. I opt for the BARRAGE to target the baseline 1 fig inf which is almost a sure medal and one which cannot be targeted otherwise. As my center forces could not mount much more of an offensive with a DHQ than the CENTER PROBE which I play anyway, the CA would be less effective here. Sure enough the BARRAGE does the job and secures out 10th medal. Sam's ART BOMBARD gets 2 hits with 4 shots vs the last Tiger but the rerolls miss. He does pick off a 2 fig inf with 3 shots - medal number 11. Gene sends his Int ordered tank into the center to help me try and kill off the panzer on the hill - 6 shots reduce it to 1 fig.

A German AIR POWER gets a hit each on two inf and an arty in the center. A 1 fig inf is missed on our right with 1d. The center 1 fig panzer pulls back to another hill and attacks a tank passing up a close in attack vs a fig tank hoping that a 1d attack from an infantry can do the trick. Both tanks survive.

Gene gets two cards - an ASSAULT and a RECON. Sam gets an INF ASSAULT. My Int roll orders a tank. Sam charges the German armor -- missing the Tigers and getting a hit on a panzer.
The last panzer in the center is picked off and now it is a 12 to 6 game.

A second German BEL is played in the center. Micheal's panzers opt to fire at range on the weak infantry instead of closing in for the kill and trying top pick up three medals. A 2 fig tank is picked off by the BEL ordered infantry. Then an 0 for 3 attack vs a 2 fig infantry is followed by a 0 for 3 attack vs a 1 fig infantry on our right - wow!!!

With only 1 medal to go I play the big cards - both of which were drawn on my last turn - ARMOR ASSAULT to Gene and FIREFIGHT to Sam. I get a CENTER PROBE. I setup three 1d attacks vs the dug in infantry in front of Prekula which cannot opt to take a flag - it is stand or die for him. I get three hits and he is down to 1 fig. That means that Sam can fires 2 shots from his arty to finish him off and the game. But it never comes to that as Gene - the main man - gets a hit and flag on a 3 fig infantry in the woods. This unit then retreats onto a hill and in LOS of Gene's other tank instead of on the other side of the woods which would have saved that unit. Gene then nails the 2 fig infantry to close out the game as 13 to 7.

I do not know which was better Gene killing a 4 fig Inf with 4d, an arty with 2d and a 2 fig inf with 2d along with all the other hits he scored or Sam killing off three Tigers. Sam's Tiger rolls -- 18 hits with 41 shots. The 18 hits producing three grenades.

Congrats to all for doing a fine job and a big thank you to my FGs who made my command decisions much easier.
