Doubt with Decks Sun, 06 February 2011 02:15
Hi from Spain.
I'm Sr_Garcia (M44 Online). I have a doubt about the diferent use of decks. When and where can I use the "standard" deck or the overlord deck? The 2 decks in overlor work at the same time or is one deck for each player? And Beakthrought? and Winter Wars? I'm very confused with all differents decks. Who, Where, When ..... Sad
Please help me.
In this moment I have all expansions of M44.

Hello.

Both players will draw from the same card deck(s) used during any game.

STANDARD DECK (60 cards) which comes with the base game:

Use for any standard (one regular sized board) scenario.

OVERLORD DECK (120 cards) which came with the Overlord Expansion:

Use with any Overlord scenario (two regular sized baords placed side by side)

BREAKTHROUGH DECK (80 cards) which came with the Winter Wars Expansion:

Use with any Breakthrough scenario (Breakthrough board - 13 hexes by 17 hexes vs the 13 x 9 hex regualr sized board).

Two other card decks:

COMBAT CARDS --came out in the SWORD of STALINGRAD Expansion.

Use these when called for the scenario rules.

WINTER COMBAT CARDS -- came out in the Winter Wars Expansion.

Use these when called for in the scenario rules.

NOTE: Players may use either Combat Cards deck if they feel that a scenario should use them, but both players would have to agree to that.

I hope this helps you out.

Hello Sr. Garcia, let me see if I can help make things a little more clear! Smile

Standard Deck (comes with the base game) - used in normal scenarios and can be used in Breakthrough scenarios. You can combine two standard decks to use in Overlord battles and it is recommended (but not required) that you use two standard decks for Breakthrough battles.

Overlord Deck - designed for Overlord battles only. Replaces the use of two standard decks. These cards help players know where they can order units and are very useful for Overlord play.

Breakthrough Deck - designed for Breakthrough battles. Replaces the use of two standard decks (or one standard deck if that's what you were using). The Breakthrough Deck could be used for normal battles if you wanted to, but might speed games up a lot.

Urban Combat Deck - can be used with Overlord Deck in Overlord battles, Breakthrough Deck in breakthrough battles, or with standard decks for normal battles. Should only be used in battles with lots of city hexes, etc. Does not replace any other deck because it is used 'in combination'.

Winter Combat Deck - can be used with Overlord Deck in Overlord battles, Breakthrough Deck in Breakthrough battles, or with standard decks for normal battles. Should be used in winter battles. Does not replace any other deck because it is used 'in combination'.

I hope all of this helps. Let me know if the decks still don't make sense. Cool

If both players agree a double deck, or overlord deck (120 cards) can be used in a standard game.

Memoir44 allows house rules or other agreements to vary the standard setup.

True, if everyone agrees you can play with any cards you want and any rules you want...

I'm not sure why anyone would choose to play a normal scenario with the Overlord Deck! Rolling Eyes Those cards are designed for Overlord battles where each Field General is in charge of two sections, so the cards could get confusing very quickly. But I guess you could do that if you wanted to. Confused

Yep, Memoir '44 works well with house rules and some players prefer to play their own variations of the game! As long as you're having fun with it, don't worry about it!! Smile

My son & I play "standard" scenarios with an "overlord" deck.
We find it adds an interesting variation to play.
The cards are less predictable than with a single deck.
I ordered extra decks of cards so we could have a double deck as well as single decks.

I'm sure there have been other discussions about this on this forum.

For scenarios that use the Combat decks I use 1 standard deck with an extra set of Recon-1's in it. I find that one a fun deck.

Ah, that's a great idea!! Then you end up getting to use the Combat Deck a bit more... Cool

I'm unclear, I'm afraid...do you and your son play with two normal decks combined or do you play with the Overlord Deck that came with Operation Overlord? Confused

If you play with two normal decks combined, I could see that being very interesting because you could each be holding an Ambush or a Their Finest Hour card (which could make for a tense game). I could see this working quite well.

If you're playing with the Operation Overlord deck, I think this would be a hard way to play normal scenarios because all of the cards were re-written for Overlord battles and so you would have to translate most of them back to normal play. It could be done, but I wouldn't recommend it for new players and like I said, I'm not sure why you would use this deck if you have multiple normal decks. Smile

But if that's what you're doing and you have fun with it, more power to you!! Enjoy! Cool

Thanks for all of your answers above.
It's also helped clear up a few things for me as well.

About the 2 small expansion decks Urban combat and winter wars.

Whilst winter wars is new and obviously still freely available, the other deck is now quite difficult to obtain.

Also, if you don't have many actual oppenents in your area then a number of people might decide that the overlord expansion is not for them. But there is no way of getting the urban deck without the overlord expansion map.

A good idea would be for DOW to offer for sale, these packs individually as they do for the main base game packs.

I'm sure these decks can work well in all of the various formats available and this would allow a larger group of people to enjoy their benefits

Yes, single standard deck are available from the DOW store. $5.00 US. Under the M44 section of items.

Wish they sold higher quality dice too!

I understand what you are saying about having the decks for sale. I rarely play the 2 player Memoir and bought the Winter Wars simply for the Winter Combat Deck to play Overlord. Those breakthrough cards and most of the tiles are of no use to me. I just had to "suck it up" in order to get the Winter cards.

Extra decks were ordered from the DoW online store.
I live sooooo far away (in the South Pacific in the shakey isles) that freight is my biggest expense, so I threw in extra decks in a couple of orders. I probably have 6 ordinary decks now - two singles with the base game, 2 shuffled into a double deck, and two spares for future use.

rasmussen81: We use two ordinary decks shuffled together.
Overlord is the only expansion I have never ordered (and probably will never order) as I bought a second (2nd hand) base game instead. The only other item I don't have is the bag.

(We had a 7,1 earthquake on Sept 4 2010 and are still having many aftershocks. If you are interested have a look at "Canterbury Quake Live")

I have both Combat Card decks but would welcome if both were for sale by themselves. My main reason is it is sort of difficult to shuffle just 20 cards. So having two sets of each deck would double each decks total to 40 cards and make it easier to shuffle them.

Standard Deck (comes with the base game) - used in normal scenarios and can be used in Breakthrough scenarios. You can combine two standard decks to use in Overlord battles and it is recommended (but not required) that you use two standard decks for Breakthrough battles.

Cool

Thanks a lot for your replies.
Is more clear for me. Only one question, ¿ Each player play with a deck or the two deck are mixed in only one deck?
Thanks again.
See You in M44 Online.

Ah. I put both combat decks in sleeves, different colors for each decks. Makes it easy to shuffle and there is no wear on the cards. I also have my standard decks in sleeves as well. So you don't fan shuffle, but shuffle by merging the two decks length-wise. Much easier.

We have a lot of extra sleeves (hundreds) from our Pokemon playing days.

Yep. I marked one deck with a black dot in the lower right corner. But it was still a bit tedious separating them. I used to mix the two before I got the overlord expansion.

Later, I ordered two extra decks and just kept those together for a permanent double-deck, which I used primarily for breakthrough. Now I suppose those are obsolete with the breakthrough deck.

I had a similar issue- however I've noticed someone round here (I forget who, apologies) has suggested that for combat card scenarii you use one standard deck, plus the recon-1s from a 2nd deck- could be an ideal use of your spare decks.

I think the operation overlord is really worth it because of these two factors:

1. Special Overlord command deck shows who plays what card. It is really geared to overlord and answers many questions from newbies before they're asked.

2. New dice! Yes, the OO comes with eight more dice so that you don't have to get the dice out of your original set, or you can use these dice to replace your original set(s).

3. Cardboard chits. I use these because I don't have two sets yet! I have been wanting a second set, but every time I have extra cash, another expansion or battle map comes out that I must have!

Think about it, the OO is a worthwhile expansion!

That would be me, and I find it works great. For me it brings the Combat Cards more into play.
