Female players? Mon, 21 February 2011 20:37
My wife is a casual gamer with NO interest in WWII or any sort of wargame, so I didn't think she would even try Memoir 44. I told her the game was only a light wargame with simple rules, and to my surprise she agreed to "try" it.

While waiting for our box to come in the mail I showed her the Days of Wonder promotional video, hoping to inspire her more, but it had the opposite effect. She said it looked "boring".

Long story short(er) our game arrived from Amazon and we played it a couple of times. She said she didn't mind it!

Next, we played a couple of games of M44 Online and wonder of wonders she not only "doesn't mind it" she LOVES the computer version! Every night for the past week she has said, "So... do you want to play that game?" Naturally, I reply, "YES PLEASE!" (I think it helps that the game runs on our laptops, so we can play while sitting on the couch together.)

Is this unusual? Any other guys out there with wives/girlfriends who like the game?

I know Timjollys wife Wendy plays... I have had the honor to toss dice with her online. And a few other luck guys I know of...

But it is rare to find a girl that likes history conflict based games.

Randwulf,

Wendy doesn't do the forum thing, but I read your post to her and she was tickled that you remembered her. Spring has been busy, but look for both of us online soon.

My girlfriend plays M'44 and enjoys it (she also beats me from time to time mercilessly), she has tried a bit of M'44 online, but it doesn't work on her computer yet, so we can't play on couch Smile

There are three girls who play M'44 in our circle of friends and I believe just one of them was coerced.

My wife plays, and mostly seems to enjoy it, although so far, the online version doesn't seem to appeal. She also has a strange aversion to Overlord.

I find waving the 200-page Flames of War rulebook around, and then suggesting that perhaps we just play Memoir instead works well.

You guys are funny

My GF is completely averse to playing war games of any kind - I try to tell her that the little plastic soldiers don't actually suffer, but to no avail...

My wife doesn't like it. That's why I play the board game so often solo.

My wife offered to play my M'44 boardgame version if she could bring a Zippo and use the "Burnt Ground" tactic.

I politely declined for fear of a fire.

I'm starting to regret my wife's interest in this game. We played both sides of two scenarios yesterday and she beat me all four times!

The first game was pretty epic. Playing as the Axis forces I pretty much dominated the early going. After about 15 minutes I had 4 of the 5 required victory medals and she had but one. A few turns later she took out one of my tank units, making the score 4 to 2.

I advanced on a couple of her wounded units, victory pretty much assured, but on her next turn she rolled 2 dice and got a tank and a grenade, taking out one of my armor units. Then she moved a lone tank 3 hexes into my territory, adjacent to a single soldier that I was "hiding". I remember thinking, "She still doesn't understand this game. She should leave her armor at range because she gets the same number of di--"

She rolled an infantry, took out my unit, and used armor overrun to move into the city the soldier was hiding in. The city with the final victory medal.

Three victory medals in one turn to win the game. Unbelievable. Wink

Brilliant strategy on your part to let her win like that, Harkness!

My wife and I played one game of chess, many years ago. I commented on some of her, um, ill-advised moves. She hasn't played chess with me since.

I may have lost that battle, but judging by other outcomes during the past 25+ years, I've done very well in the broader campaign.
