Axis vs Allies Tournament
|
Mon, 14 March 2011 13:06
|
 |
This thread is a continuation of the North/South Tournament thread found here ..
http://www.daysofwonder.com/en/msg/?goto=210472#msg_210472
I've found myself volunteering to administer a 12 player, online tournament ! (How did that happen??)
So far I have interest from:
Rasmussen (Jesse)
Nygaard (Magnus)
Phread
Frankeytje
Gunhawk
Morgiliath (??)
including myself, that makes 7 players... so FIVE places are still up for grabs
Please indicate your interest below in this 'friendly' tournament that simply provides a bit of bite to any online scenarios you might be playing (ie there is no prize, other than the satisfaction of having WON)
The format is basically made up of two teams: 6 players in each, ie 6 Ally team members, 6 Axis team members.
Each team member will play every member of the opposite team, once only, (so 6 single battle scenarios in total).
The idea is to amass as many medals as possible and to outperform your fellow team members!
This constitutes the 'group phase'.
Then, the leading performer from each team, (so after everyone has completed their 6 battles), will meet up in the finale, to play an Allies v Axis two battle scenario to determine the overall winner.
Medals conceded will count against you in the 'group phase' in case there is a tie-breaker for the top spot.
On confirming the 12 contestants, I'll publish the scenarios we are going to use in the group phase(working on using entirely 6 medal victory scenarios, that are as evenly balanced as possible, (although the balance isn't too crucial as you are scoring points against your own team members really) ... I'll also determine which team you are on, and publish a fixture list, which can be worked through in any order.
Reports for each battle are optional, but obviously the scores will need to be posted here, let's say by the victor, (like most history books)
I think that's all for now ... just another five names to go before we can start!
Keep em coming ... don't be shy ...
Regards
Jim
nb If you could manage to arrange times etc for fulfilling the fixtures via private messaging, and leave this thread for results only (once we start) that would be helpful, but not crucial.
Looking forward to it ...

So, is 'medals earned' the only criteria for advancing to the finals? I would think it should be overall record, followed by medals won, followed by medals conceded...
For example, in a four game series (for simplicity):
Johnny goes 3-1 with the scores 6-5, 6-5, 6-4, and 1-6
Herman goes 2-2 with the scores 6-4, 6-3, 4-6, and 4-6
So Herman would advance with 20 medals over 19 for Johnny even though he split. I would think that Johnny should move on since he won three times.
I'm not trying to make things more complicated, I'm just trying to understand.
Didn't DoW publish some tournament guidelines a long time ago? I'm trying to remember...

That's a good question ... (and complete with a good answer too, I like it !) ...
For the sake of simplicity, this time, this particular tournament is all about the medals ... so yes, as in the above example, even if you win less games, you could still top the group on a greater medal count. It's helpful that you've clarified this now, rather than later
(Of course, to ensure you don't feel cheated by this system, you will just have to go out there and win all 6 games lol)
On a more serious note, there's absolutely no reason why, once we get through this format, we could change next time, and try it as you've suggested, that way we can compare and see which is most favourable ...
BUT FOR NOW, IT'S JUST THE MEDALS THAT COUNT !
Thanks for seeking clarity on that ...
nb .. In case of a tie ... medals gained by the opposition during the group phase will count against you ... in case there's still a tie, a further scenario will need to be picked out to determine a clear group winner, I'll list it once we get started so we all know where we stand.
(Phew! What have I gotten myself into !)
Cheers for your observation Geoff

OK, that is fine. Just wanted to make sure I understand.
So, it is worthwhile to risk a unit (or units) just to get an extra medal or two -- since getting the medal is more important than giving one up.

Re: Risking units just to grab medals?
I would say so, definately ...
The way you need to look at it is, you have five other competitors all playing the same scenarios, all as the same nation as you .. If you lose a game 5-6 ,that may be 5 more medals than any of your opponents get on that scenario, if they lose out too!
So yes, ideally, win the scenario and bag 6 medals, but if you're gonna lose, make sure you grab whatever you can !!!
I guess this set-up will favour the more aggressive players .. but as it's a first attempt, i honestly have NO idea how its gonna go ... let's see, and above all have a blast !
There are inevitable flaws in all systems, one problem I can foresee, with the results being available, will be that somebody who say loses their opening 3 games 0-6 could just lose heart and might not want to continue as they wont feel they have a hope of topping the group. Of course, they would still have the satisfaction of stealing points off members of the opposing team, thereby effecting others' scores ...
NOTE TO ALL :
Suffice to say that this is simply a way of spicing up your online games, and not a 'serious' competition, so if you're in from the start, please just play it out in the spirit of the game and above all HAVE FUN taking medals wherever you can !

(Although I could do with hearing from Morgiliath to confirm their interest)...
Assuming Morgiliath is 'in' ..
that leaves THREE PLACES STILL OPEN !!

I haven't had time to play for a few weeks but I'm finishing a class this week and should have plenty of time to get some games in over the next few, so I'm interested. I enjoy having a goal in mind when I play so this sounds like fun. I'm in California.

Great news Sam !
That gives us our twelve, ALTHOUGH MORGILIATH IS YET TO RESPOND.
AT THE SAME TIME THO', in case we don't hear from him, I'm happy to offer a RESERVE place to somebody, to stand in for him until he shows.
So if anyone else out there fancies being on 'stand-by', to play on his behalf, PLEASE LET ME KNOW !
You may only get to play one game, you might go all the way, but it could help us to complete the format.
Later on today I'll take a look at the team line-ups, and post them here along with all the fixtures. You will each have just 6 fixtures to commit to ... and it's fine to play in ANY order.
Although there's no urgency on this, a few people have mentioned they are tied up toward the end of the month, so where possible, if you can attempt to complete your 6 battles by the end of the month then that's great, but if we need to break for a week or so and resume in April then I don't have aproblem with that, let's just see how it goes!
Looking forward to making new friendships ... and taking you all out!
Watch this space for further instructions ....

I think if someone is going to stand in, they need to only be the 'stand in' until the battles start. If Morgiliath doesn't show up before the battles start, the stand-in should stay and Morgiliath will have to wait until next tournament. Otherwise we may not have anyone step up to just be a body.

Fair point.
And I note we have someone ineterested, so I'm going to suggest we give Morgiliath the chance to sign up between now and me setting the fixtures ... if he hasn't responded then David can take his place on a permanent basis.

And in the Blue corner .... playing on the Axis team:
A) JJs Juggernaut * replaced last minute by Morgiliath (Andy)
B) Rasmussen (Jesse)
C) Frankeytje
D) David5272
E) gheintze (Geoff)
F) Jaykay2010 (Jim)
And in the ..er, GREEEEEN corner ... playing on the Allies team:
G) Mochihead (Garrett)
H) LoonyLlama (Eric)
I) Nygaard (Magnus)
J) Phread
K) Gunhawk (Ed)
L) Sam1812
Remember, although you'll only be battling members of the opposite team, you're actually competing against your own team members, the aim being to come top of your team with the most medals gained after six battles.
I'm just going to compile the fixture list, the scenarios we're playing, and tweak the tie-break conditions, and then I do believe we are good to go.
As mentioned in an earlier post, Morgiliath has until the fixture list goes up to respond, otherwise David5272 will be taking his place.
Quick update: Due to some last minute changes, Morgiliath takes JJs Juggernaughts place, and David soldiers on! (8.38pm GMT 15th March).

The six scenarios listed below, with their corresponding fixture list, will constitute the group phase, and can be played in ANY ORDER.
It would be helpful, when submitting the battle result, if you could CLEARLY show the scores of BOTH competitors, and also CLEARLY mention the FIXTURE number and scenario, for no other reason than it would significantly help my organisational skills lol Any light AAR's are welcome but not compulsory.
The winner should post the result, checking with their opponent that they have the correct score for BOTH players. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!! JUST BECAUSE YOU THRASHED YOUR OPPONENT DOESNT MEAN YOU CAN FORGET ABOUT THE ODD MEDAL HE MAY HAVE PICKED UP!
nb Using this format, unbalanced scenario's do not matter.
You will be playing exactly the same scenario as your fellow team members, it's simply a case of who performs best out of the six of you, on that specific scenario, and the five others which follow of course ...
So:
FIXTURE 1 - Dug in at Sidi Omar
JJs Juggernaut*** Morgiliath V Mochihead
Rasmussen V LoonyLlama
Frankeytje V Nygaard
David5272** V Phread
gheintze V Gunhawk
Jaykay2010 V Sam1812
FIXTURE 2 - Toulon
Morgiliath V Sam1812
Rasmussen V Mochihead
Frankytje V LoonyLlama
David5272** V Nygaard
gheintze V Phread
Jaykay2010 V Gunhawk
FIXTURE 3 - Montelimar
Morgiliath V Gunhawk
Rasmussen V Sam1812
Frankytje V Mochihead
David5272** V LoonyLlama
gheintze V Nygaard
Jaykay2010 V Phread
FIXTURE 4 - Twin Villages
Morgiliath V Phread
Rasmussen V Gunhawk
Frankytje V Sam1812
David5272** V Mochihead
gheintze V LoonyLlama
Jaykay2010 V Nygaard
FIXTURE 5 - St Vith
Morgiliath V Nygaard
Rasmussen V Phread
Frankytje V Gunhawk
David5272** V Sam1812
gheintze V Mochihead
Jaykay2010 V LoonyLlama
FIXTURE 6 - Tunisia
Morgiliath V LoonyLlama
Rasmussen V Nygaard
Frankytje V Phread
David5272** V Gunhawk
gheintze V Sam1812
Jaykay2010 V Mochihead
* Morgiliath will be replaced by David if there has been no record of reply from him upon these fixtures being made available
** David enters the tourney, (recorded at 5:08pm GMT 15th March)
***Morgiliath joins the Axis team (8.36pm GMT 15th March) - replacing an early casualty as JJs Juggernaught retires Sorry you won't be able to join us Josiah!
GROUP PHASE TIE BREAKER:
When all the results are in, I'll post the league table for each team, with each members score, which will comprise of medals won (FOR), and also medals lost to your opponents (AGAINST).
The player with the most medals won will go through to the final.
In the event of a tie for top spot, the player with the LOWEST score of medals lost, ie AGAINST, will go through.
If this is still a tie, then a play off battle, between both players (there may be more than 2 players of course, but we can worry about that nearer the time), will take place using the Sidi Rezegh Airfield scenario, playing 2 battles, switching sides, taking both scores combined to produce a winner (hopefully).
THE FINAL:
The two winners will compete using the Into the Cauldron scenario, playing 2 battles, switching sides, taking both scores combined to determine the overall winner.
Should this produce a tie, the player who had scored the MOST medals in the group phase will be deemed the winner.
If there is still a tie, then the player scoring the least number of medals lost during the group phase will win.
If there is STILL a tie, then maybe the honourable thing after that will be to crown you both as joint victors!!!
Phew ... I think we're there! If you could check over the fixtures and make sure you have 6 different opponents from the opposite team that would be a good start, and from there start arranging your own match ups with the relevant scenario,
AND GO GET THOSE MEDALS !!!!!!!!
If possible use private messaging to arrange times/rendezvous, and leave the thread here for the results, unless you're not getting replies, then feel free to holler louder here !
Gentleman, the hour has come .... good luck to everyone, and have fun !
