I don't understand the rules clarification... Fri, 11 March 2011 21:03
This was a "front page" item and I appreciate the fact that DoW is trying to fix a situation but there is confusion (at least for me)

From reading the article, there is no clear idea of what rule is being misinterpreted and what the players are doing to play the game wrong. I know that it applies to different types of cargo but then I am lost.

Can someone please give some examples of play (both the right and wrong ways)?

Thanks!

PS - I have not played the game yet - I own a copy but still waiting to get my group together.

EDIT: After reading the article again, I THINK I get it. Let me know:

So people are trying to trade in 4 Cars and 2 Cigars and 1 Uranium for 7 "different items" worth of points, when in reality they would have to be 7 DIFFERENT Items? So it is either all or nothing? Either 7 of the SAME item or 7 DIFFERENT must be traded in?

OK I think I get it but yeah I would have missed that I believe, when playing for the first time. And yes that is a gamebreaker right there! lol glad it was caught

There is no misinterpretation. Some people just read the rules too quickly and didn't pay enough attention to the words "each of a different type", which we will put in bold next time around.

here are some example of trades that are all legit:

- 5 Uranium for 25 points (one trade of cargoes, all of the same type)

- 4 Uranium for 16 points plus 3 ivory for 9 points, for a total of 25 points (2 trades, each with tokens all of a same type)

- 1 Uranium, 1 Ivory, 1 Weapon, 1 Wild, 1 Gold for a total of 15 points (one trade of cargoes, ALL OF A DIFFERENT type).

- 1 Uranium, 1 Ivory, 1 Weapon, 1 Gold for 10 points plus 3 Alcohol for 9 points plus 1 Uranium, 1 Ivory, 1 Weapon for 6 points, for a total of 25 points (3 trades, 1 with cargoes all of the same type, 2 with cargoes all of a different type)

Here is a trade that is NOT legit:

- 2 Uranium, 2 Weapons, 1 Gold, 1 Ivory, 1 Car for a total of 7 different tokens worth 28 points This is WRONG because the tokens are not ALL DIFFERENT in that trade.

The best you could do here instead is:

- 1 trade of 1 Uranium, 1 Weapon, 1 Gold, 1 Ivory, 1 Car worth 15 points + 1 trade of 1 Uranium, 1 Weapon for 3 points, giving you a grand total of 15+3=18 points, not 28 points.

(And yes, in this example you could also do 3 trades: 1 Gold, 1 Ivory, 1 Car for 6 points, 2 Uranium for 4 points and 2 Weapons for 4 points, but the grand total of this would only be 14 points).

Correct, the items in 1 trade must either ALL BE DIFFERENT or ALL THE SAME. You can still do multiple trades in one turn, and add those up to purchase a higher card, but you cannot say I have 3 weapons, 3 uranium, 3 cards, that's a total of 9 different tokens. This would be wrong.

I'm pretty sure I know the answer but I'm just checking because it's going to bug me otherwise.

With the rules clarification you need nine different tokens to trade in to get the 45 points. But there are only 8 different kinds of cargo and a wild type.

I thought that wild just counted as a type of cargo that you pick. So getting 9 different cargo would be impossible because the wild would count as a duplicate of one already present cargo.

Or does the wild not take on any other kind of cargo and it just remains a "wild".

So I'm assuming the rules just count it as not taking on the form of another cargo it just can go with anything to increase the size of a like set and it is different in that it can be used in conjunction with 8 different cargo to become the last 9th cargo to get the big 45 point score.

I know this is kind of a goofy question but for some reason it's kind of bugging me so I thought I'd ask and get an official answer and not have to worry about it anymore.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Actually there are 9 different cargo types, not 8. Look on page 2 of the rules. These are:

Alcohol, Weapons, Art, Cars, Cigars, Ivory, Jewels, Gold and Uranium.

So this is a non-issue, if you're missing one category, then you would use Wild to make up that missing cargo. that's it.

I'm with the OP--I don't think either of us had trouble with this part of the rules. The confusion occurred as a result of the clarification, ironically.

IMO, DOW's handling of the situation is great. But they take on too much culpability. It's not DOW's fault. Some people can't read. Some people aren't bright. DOW is an equal opportunity game seller: they sell to anyone, regardless of IQ or reading-level. LOL

Thanks for clearing this up Eric. Having previously misunderstood a rule myself (IQ check!) I was a little worried I'd missed something else when I read the clarification.

P.S.> I also appreciate what you guys are doing with the bags. Right on. As always, DOW does the right thing.

This rule hadn't given me any trouble either (since it's explained in the rule book pretty clearly) but I can just see the press release now, if DoW took this new stance:

"Since many of our players (and even worse, people who were teaching the game) can't read or apear to be dumb as sand, here's a rule clarification for the rules that are clearly written on page ##"

I like it. It's a new, more direct approach to the root problem...literacy!! Laughing As an elementary teacher, I feel it's my duty to endorse this new approach and tell people how it is. Cool
