Memoir '44 Online Beta 22

Dear Memoir '44 Online Officer:
We are happy to report that we released the Beta 22 version of the software.
Welcome to the Eastern Front
We've discovered some patches of snow in the Spring! This new release gives you a chance to roam the bitter-cold ice fields of Eastern Europe and Finland. Four brand new Eastern Front scenarios await you: "Ponyri", "Gates of Moscow", "Breakout At Klin" and "Suomussalmi".
These new scenarios will challenge you like never before and require you to adapt your Command skills accordingly; even then, you might be in for a tough fight. Make sure you read the special rules before playing and remember to invoke the built-in help cards when needed. As you will soon find out, even the most innocuous-looking frozen river can be treacherous. And remember that even when the odds look awry, a skillful use of new troops (yes, that includes Finnish ski troops!) can and often will save the day.
Playing with the Russian Commissar
Three of these new Eastern Front scenarios feature the dreaded "Russian Commissar". At the very beginning of the game, the Russian player must put one of his Command Cards under the Russian Commissar token. The game will not start until the Russian player has done so.
At the beginning of each turn thereafter, the Russian player must put another card under the Russian Commissar token. The card that was placed there at the previous turn will be played automatically.
Of course, as described in the Russian Command rules, you may also choose to play a Counter Attack or Recon card instead. Just play those as usual.
WE NEED YOU - The Load Test - Can You Help Us Break the Memoir '44 Server?
As we inch closer to the release of 1.0, we want to start conducting some heavy load tests on our servers. As such, we need your help! We will send you a separate e-mail containing specific instructions early next week. For now, let's just say that we would really appreciate if you could find the time to play a couple of games on the 2 days of load-tests we will be scheduling (one mid-week, most likely on Wednesday April 6; the other, over the week-end of April 9-10, most likely on Saturday).
We will try to load the servers by having as many games as possible played concurrently. These will center on 1-hour long sessions during those 2 test days.
A special "Chaaaaarge!" Achievement will be awarded to participants, along with a special bonus. Stay tuned for news about this event and make sure you to check your inbox come early next week - it should be fun and we might break some records and/or some servers in the process !. If you have thought of inviting some friends to try the game out, this might be a good time to get them ready; the more players we will have on those designated time slots, the better!
What's Coming Next?
First of all a BIG DISCLAIMER: This is development Software, and what is worse, Beta Software. So while we believe what follows to be the most accurate description of our development plans and status as of this date, some things might still go wrong: as a result there could still be a difference between what we plan to do and hope to accomplish at any point in time, and what we will actually be able to deliver over the next few months, in terms of timing and features…
One important focus of the next couple of releases will be completing the final polish of the graphics and user interface we want to have in place in 1.0.
At the same time, we will continue working on, and striving to release, new scenarios on a regular basis. How many we will be able to put out, and exactly when remains to be seen, but one thing is sure. The Pacific Theater will offer some interesting new challenges.
Last not least, Version 1.1 of the Memoir '44 Editor, with its support for the recently released Winter Wars, is finally close to being finished.
Important: Due to a series of internal scheduling constraints, the next two updates will be released 3 weeks apart from this one and each other. Do not take this as a sign of a slow-down in development though - quite the contrary !
How to upgrade?
It is quite easy, simply launch the game. After you log in, it will automatically detect the new version and offer to download it. Make sure you do so. Then follow the instructions that appear on your screen.
If you have problems, you can always go to http://www.memoir44-online.com and download the software again. Nothing will be lost, since all your profile is stored in your DoW Online account.

Nice!! I could use some cold weather over here in Abu Dhabi...
It looks like it might get up to 33 degrees C this weekend (91 degrees F) and it's only going to get hotter from here on!
As always, thanks for all the hard work on this game, Yann and team! It's looking good and it has already provided hours of enjoyment!!!

Here we go again.
Once more the download grinds to a halt. Is there a mirror server to download from yet?
Exactly same as last time and it took me 2 weeks to download getting a few MB each day!!
Same as before, every thing else still downloads quickly, itunes, documents, AV upgrades, even the latest Firefox, all quick. But M44 Online.
Nada.

Could you please try it and tell us how it goes?
Also, we would like to have details about your personal connection:
- Type of DSL line: home line? speed?...
- Type of Modem/Router you use: brand, device, firmware version (if you can find it), etc.
- Operating system and Web browser that you use: Windows ? IE Explorer ?...
Thanks in advance!

Yann,
Thanks for setting up the mirror server, I'm trying it now.
As for my setup it's
Windows 7 usinbg IE8(8.0.76) and Firefox 3.6.15, both have the same issue.
Netgear Wireless Modem/Router DG834G/DG834GB with Edimax 802.11n Wireless PCI Card
My ISP is onetel / talk talk
It's bizarre as up until v18 it was fine. V19 became slow and I think wasquickly superceded by v20 so I went straight to 20.
Anything else to help?
Another trace or even I could try download a simple test text file for example?

Welcome to the Memoir '44 forum community!! I hope you'll find everyone here as helpful as I have.

I'm afraid I can't help you solve the problem, but I can point you in the right direction to get help. This forum can be a useful place to post problems you're having and get advice from other players, but the programers only check it once in a while so you might have to wait for a long time to get help if you only post your question here...
So I would recommend that you follow the link I have below to the Bug Report Form and follow the directions provided. This will send the tech team a message about your bug and they can e-mail you directly with instructions or questions.
Good luck and welcome again!

Did something change on *your* setup (including any change in router/modem firmware or firewall versions) around the time of the problem?
What you experience is certainly a TCP window scale problem. This happens when a host advertise a larger TCP window with the window scale option and the receiving size (ie our server) doesn't get the option because an intermediate host stripped it (it's usually an old buggy router or firewall).
One quick way to see if this is the problem is to:
1) launch a cmd.exe as administrator
2) enter:
netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
Then try to download the game from our website (not the link Yann posted).
I also suggest you to upgrade your router firmware (I don't know what version you're running, but I see a lots of new updates on the netgear site for your model).
Let us know:
1) if the alternate address worked better
2) if any of the above helped you

| Wildman wrote on Fri, 01 April 2011 23:31 | I had a major problem when trying to install Beta 22. It downloaded fine but upon extraction a prompt came up saying that a version was already running an .exe of an older version. So I moved it but of the folder but this just made it worse. Now I can't uninstall through control panel or anything else without that same prompt coming up and just allowing me to exit. I've tried getting Beta 22 from the website but no difference. Do I save it to a different location manually? How do I get the old corrupted one off my computer? Looking for any help.
Trying to update it again through the website it stops at: install4j has detected that Memoir '44 Online is currently running: C:\ProgramFiles\Memoir'44Online.exe.
Hitting 'retry' does nothing, so you have to exit. Also you can't uninstall for the same reason.
|
Have you rebooted your computer?
Then if that didn't help, you can safely rename the Memoir'44 Online directory, then download the b22 version and install it manually.

Sometimes a M44 online session doesn't terminate properly leaving the application running in the background.
I have had up to four copies running in the background.
When you need to alter files (a new installation or compressing log files) you can't because the files are locked by the background process.
The Windows Task Manager (for Micro$oft systems) will allow you to see and terminate these ghost/zombie programs running in the background.

Hiya Brice, thanks for helping out.
First off Yann's alternative site produced the same result sadly, a real slow download.
As regards my setup nothing changed that I'm aware of other than the usual autoupgrades of Firefox, IE, Norton's etc... Certainly nothing that I consciously initiated.
The TCP scaling issue does sound the most plausible reason (had to google it to read up on it ) and I disabled the autotuning level as suggested.
I also upgraded the firmware to the router to the latest version.
I then tried the download from the webpage rather than the alternative.
The only changed I've noticed so far is the initial part of the download is very quick for about 20Mb gice or take, then it slows right down again!!
Yann's alternative site did not have the improved initial download and remained a slow download.
Previous to your suggestions I'd got as far as about 100Mb over 3 days by pausing and unpausing the download, this seems to kick start it once it grinds to a halt, and then it failed.
The failure usually involves reporting the full file as downloaded but then actualy being the wrong size and fails to execute when double-clicked.
Regards,
Steve

I just played my first game of Memoir 44 Online today. I have never played the "real" game. I had a blast even against Johnny, he was a bit quiet but that was ok he was patient
In regards to the troubles with downloading patches is there any way P2P could be used to help distibute the patch? Something like Vuze. I know I got a lot of legal game demos and video podcasts from them. Perhaps a good way to also get new users too.
Thanks for a great game, now I got to save for the hard copy

I feel like a super noob on 2 counts. First I posted generally instead of sending a trouble shooting form. Secondly, all it took was to shut down my computer (I usually just let it sleep)to correct itself.
Thanks for the help I can't wait to try out the new maps, etc.

Yann, Brice.
Finally loaded it. Took most of the day pausing and unpausing the downloads - I say downloads as I had about 8 running concurrently. Seems to be a more steady download rate when I had a few downloads running at the same time albeit slow as mentioned before.
So I can play at least but I expect the issue will likely crop up again for v23
Thanks,
Steve

Can you contact your Internet Service Provider and send them the download urls. Ask them if that's normal that downloading is slow or stalls as you experience from their internal network.
It might well be possible that the problem is on their side.
Also, if you feel brave enough, it would be great to try to capture the traffic during the download for further analysis (contact us on the contact form to arrange the details).
Let us know what they answer,

At the same time, we will continue working on, and striving to release, new scenarios on a regular basis. How many we will be able to put out, and exactly when remains to be seen, but one thing is sure. The Pacific Theater will offer some interesting new challenges.
|
Does this mean that you are going to release the Pacific Theater before you finnish releasing the Eastern Front? I personaly, was looking for ward the Red Barricades Factories, snipers, and Break Out at Lyska(Not quite sure have to spell it ).

I should have clarified. I know and I've played them and really liked them , but it would be really nice to see them in the regular online game. They play so much faster and there are more players that are eligable to play them.
By the way, Thanks DoW team for all your hard work. You have created a great game.

So far the pattern has been that if you can play an Official battle in Expert Mode it is eventually programmed and playable in Normal and Solo Mode. I would not at all be surprised to see all of (or most of) the Eastern Front scenarios from the EF expansion available on the Online game before the Pacific Theater is released online.
I'm sure the scenarios will eventually become available, even if the Pacific Theater slips in there before...the DoW crew knows how to take care of business!

Users who have the Memoir '44 Editor will get the upgrade for free.
JJs Juggernaut, I think we already had this conversation before, but I don't remember seeing your answer about it. There never was a "free version" of the Editor, even if you could activate it during the account "conversion" process that happened in early April 2009. In your case, I believe that you probably did this but with another account. Send me a Private Message with other e-mail addresses that you could have used in the past and I will search for a second account.
