What we need for Memoir 44 Sat, 23 April 2011 16:47
Here's some ideas for some new expansions I would like to see:
1) An island/ sea board map for small pacific island battles and expanded naval battles.
2) Campaign Book Vol. 2 with an Italy campaign, a North Africa campaign, and a Pacific campaign.

Please consider these DOW! I'd love to see these or other expansions in the future.

1. I've been saying that for the last four years!

2. I have three Pacific Campaigns available on my user page!
And I know someone once made a Operation Crusader Campaign.

Almost there with you guys, with a twist.
I'd like for them to make Maps that are all WATER (so you can construct your own islands, archipelagoes, large rivers, bays, etc. with the land hexes we already have) and a map that is 100% CITY-SCAPE.
Especially this last one would come in very handy, IMO. That way you could construct house-to-house fighting scenarios much faster than now. This would probably mean you would need to make hexes that are "clear" to simulate parks and open squares, as well as road hexes that look like asphalt or concrete.

What would your scale be for playing with islands and ocean area. It seems to me that the scale would not be on the close combat level that is currently enjoyable in the memoir series. Possibly the hexes could be sized down, but now we are getting back to the non-miniature board gaming style.
Thoughts?

Mem44 scenarios vary in size from squad based fighting from house to house to entire divisions of men fighting over vast distances. That's one of the things I really love about it.

So a sea-based battle could well be a case where each hex represents a dozen or more kilometers/miles and where the shooting range is more of a "threat range".

That's how I explain it for division size battles - it's not that they actually shoot that far, it's how much territory a division can effectively attack, for instance.

The only way I could see that sea battles could occur would be if there was a discovery or search board and then a battle board. The ocean is not at all like the ground battles. The two forces could be hundreds of miles apart and still battle. I remember an old Avalon Hill game called "Midway". I still have it and love to play it. It has a search board in which you find the enemy and then once you find the enemy you switch to another board called the battle board and conduct your air and sea attacks. This brings you the large scale for searching and locating and then the small scale for actual battles.

I would be interested in hearing thoughts from others as to what you feel memoir could do or be like for ocean searches and battles????

Also, coming out this week, is my own Japanese Invasion of China campaign, with a pdf of rules and scenarios on my user page. It looks great with 16 solid scenarios.
Check it out!

Nice! We needed more Pacific Theater campaigns and scenarios. Thanks to you and Ny, now we have them. It has officially been an overlooked theater for far too long. I'm hoping for a PT battlemap! And I like your island idea, speaking of scale, many of the islands we landed on were mere specks on the map. Tarawa was a very small island. Some were just coral atolls.

I'm still plodding along on my Operation Iceberg campaign (the Battle of Okinawa), too.

As the spring weather improves, my pace tends to slow...more afternoons on the golf course than at the gaming table... Confused

I've always liked the idea of an Italy Campaign. I don't have time to create one that links everything together, but I would love to see an expansion with a campaign that followed the battle up through Italy! Smile

But let's be honest, I'll enjoy whatever expansion comes next for Memoir '44!! Cool

As for Campaigns - I think there's a few obvious ones that need to be next: A Pacific and a Mediterranean Campaign to make full use of those two expansions, and a Battle of the Bulge to make use of the Winter War expansion.

Now on a personal wish list vis-a-vis campaigns here are mine:
1939 Polish Campaign, Stalingrad, and (I'm with you Jesse) an Italian campaign.

And I'm looking forward to your Sino-Japanese War Campaign, Ghostbrigade, as you might have noticed, I'm also quite interested in that conflict Smile

Actually, several people have already done campaigns in these areas! I have already mentioned Pacific campaigns, and Nemesszili has a great Battle of the Bulge campaign. Its on his user page here: http://www.daysofwonder.com/en/mypage/455417/m44/story

I know that people have made some very interesting Campaigns and have probably put a lot of work into their scenarios. Unfortunately I've discovered that I have limited time to play Memoir '44 and I've become something of a purist...I generally only play official scenarios and therefore official campaigns.

I think it might have something to do with the fact that I know hours of testing and multiple different audiences have checked the official campaigns (and tried the scenarios) so I trust that it's going to work well.

Often times with User Created campaigns, I would be one of the testers and I just don't have time to try something that might not work. It's sad but true! If I had more free time and opponents who wanted to play Memoir all the time, I would be more inclined to play the campaigns you mentioned, but as it is I'll wait for the official campaigns or play with the next expansion that comes out (whatever it is).

I know - I was just saying that I think it would be great to have an "official version" of those campaigns (Pacific, Mediterranean, Bulge) to reach all the fans of Mem44. A lot of people don't want to go through the hassle of sorting good from mediocre fan-material. That's something you get into after you've been in the hobby for a while, IMO.

But great link, btw, thanks.
