Memoir '44 Online Beta 25 Thu, 26 May 2011 14:35
Dear Memoir '44 Online Officer:

We are happy to report that we released version Beta 25 of the software.

Mowing down bugs with a .30 caliber!

Our team brought their favorite machine gun out of retirement this release, and pinned down over 80 bugs and improvements! You will find the complete (and very long) list at the bottom of this message.

Video Tutorial

The definitive, Official M44 Online Tutorial video is now ready for prime-time! We love it and hope you will too. Check out the Tutorial button. You can also watch the HD version on the Web site at http://www.memoir44-online.com/tutorial

New Features

On top of the bugs fixed, there are a few new notable features.

When playing a rematch game, you will now get an extra screen after the AAR screen of the second game. The Rematch Screen shows a recap of the two battles, adding up medals and figures won and determining the best player overall.

You can now rate scenarios. This is accomplished in the AAR screen, once you've finished a game. Note that you will be rating the scenario, not your particular battle over this scenario or your opponent. The averaged rating of all players will show in the scenario list of the Headquarters screen.

You no longer have to log in each time you start the game anymore. It will log in automatically for you. If you need to switch to a different account, simply use the Logout button in the Main Menu.

The Expert Mode: Important Changes - and what's Coming Next

After analyzing play patterns and user feedback during the beta, we have decided to bite the bullet and abandon our current "Vassal-like" Expert Mode to replace it with something that we hope will more closely match overall players' expectations.

Originally, we developed the Expert mode to:
- make sure that players of Memoir '44 Online would be able to keep playing the game above and beyond the base game's 16 official scenarios, even if we turned out to be unable to keep releasing new Official scenarios on a steady basis
- provide a way for players to "manually" play test their own scenarios and other Scenarios from the Front, despite the fact that those might contain rules that would not be supported by our game engine yet.

Feedback, and perhaps more tellingly actual play stats from the extended beta we've been running, have shown that we have been mistaken on both counts. Namely:

- Playing Official Scenarios with the rules enforced (ie playing Memoir '44 Online) has been so compelling overall that switching from that mode to a "Manual" mode where every rule has to be enforced by the players themselves proved to be a non-starter, and worse - a source of confusion or frustration for the vast majority of players! Further, this sentiment held true even for scenarios that could not be played any other way! Throughout the beta, we offered in Expert mode scenarios that could not yet be played online. Yet the play stats consistently revealed that less than 1 in 5,000 games are played in Expert mode!
- On the flip side, we ended up making much faster progress that we had initially hoped for in making Official scenarios beyond the base game 16 available for play in the "Normal" Online mode. So much so that all of the Official scenarios from the 3 Theater of Operations (Mediterranean Theater, Eastern Front and Pacific Theater) are now (or will shortly, once the final bugs are fixed) playable with all rules enforced.

For these reasons, we have thus decided to change the Expert Mode as follows:

The "manual" mode will be removed. The Expert Mode will be solely focused on enabling players to play their own scenarios with all rules enforced.

To facilitate this and make sure Players scenarios are in a format that can be played by the Online game, purchasing the Expert Mode will automatically unlock the Memoir '44 Scenario Editor for players who may not have it yet. This will of course be retroactive, so if you purchased a Captain or Major pack before today and you do not yet have access to the Scenario Editor, this program will immediately become downloadable for you from the Download Center on our web site : http://www.daysofwonder.com/en/download

In the Headquarters scenario list, the Expert Mode tab is now replaced by two new tabs: "My Scenarios" and "SFTF".

The first tab will display any private scenarios you created with the Scenario Editor and which you deem good enough to play-test. You will be able to play test your scenarios against Johnny, Memoir '44 Online's AI; you will also be able to invite other players to play-test these scenarios with you.

The rules engine will be activated, like for the Official Scenarios, so you will enjoy the same great user experience as with our own scenarios. Please keep in mind of course that our program cannot know about Special Rules that are not supported yet. So it will still be your responsibility to make sure that your scenario does not use "Home rules" our program is not or cannot be aware of.

Whether you decide to upload one of your own scenarios for play test or not will be your sole decision. These scenarios will ONLY be visible to you, not to others, though as described above you will be able to invite others to play-test them against you, in addition to being able to play test them against Johnny.

The cost for these scenarios, regardless of whether you play them against the AI or another player you invited, will always be set at 2 Gold Ingot per player.

The second tab ("SFTF" meaning "Scenarios From The Front") will contain a list of scenarios made public by you and others, for all players to enjoy. Again, these scenarios will be playable using the rules engine by all players who bought the Expert Mode.

To encourage quality, historicity and variety, a single publishing slot will be available to each author. You will be able to rotate scenarios of your own creation in and out of that slot at your own choice. If you are a prolific author, you may post a new scenario in that slot every week or even every other day of the week, for instance.

The cost to play any SFTF scenario will always be set at 3 Gold Ingots.

As with your own Play-test scenarios, the decision to make any one of your own Scenarios visible in your Scenario from the Front slot for other players to enjoy will remain yours only, not ours.

To encourage quality over quantity, we will sort these scenarios based on their usage and ratings by the community as a whole. To be clear about our objective here, and the reasoning behind our "single slot per scenario designer" philosophy: we would much rather have a short list of stellar Scenarios from the Front to play with, than too many hastily designed ones.

When will this new feature be available? Obviously, it requires some significant changes on our side, so the current release shows a "not available yet" message. The reason we are going public with this upcoming change now, ahead of the actual release of this feature, is that we are now confident we can pull it off; but we need to be clear: while development of this feature has started, it is by no means done yet.

Software being software, we will refrain from making predictions as to when it will become available except to say that:

- Our short-term plans are to finish fixing bugs and polish the user experience for beginners. These are our main goals for version 1.0, which we hope to ship on June 6, 2011, an important date for all Memoir '44 players Wink
- If all proceeds according to plan, implementing this feature will then be our next top priority.

How to upgrade?

It is easier than ever before: simply launch the game. After you log in, the game will automatically detect the new version and download it. Make sure to follow the instructions that appear on your screen, if any.

If you have problems, you can always go to http://www.memoir44-online.com and download the software again. Nothing will be lost, since all your profile is stored in your DoW Online account.

After RESUMING an interrupted game, the Ambush Card would always be triggered automatically even if you had the manual mode activated. This has been fixed.

When I start up memoir 44 online the screen informs me that the Beta 25 version is available and invites me to install it. When I press the install button the screen locks and the only way I can exit is to turn off the pc. Any suggestions?

Try going to the main web page for Memoir '44 and downloading the game from the web site. Sometimes the update has to be installed manually instead of the auto-update system.

Thanks for updates, just want to ask if it's necessary install whole new game when you can just update from older version. I mean - it will be much easier if the program fix few files where the rules are, instead of deleting and then instaling whole game. Most of the content are images and they're the same. Just a small tip Smile

Good job DoW. Cool

The Expert mode rethink makes great sense. Personally I don't have all the boardgame add-ons so don't know all the rules, but in normal mode I don't have to and play in the comfort that the software handles it for me.

I like the Results screen for after the Rematch. Have you thought of putting the combined percentages on there too?

Oh and it all still downloaded real quick so I was pleased. My ISP never did get back to me over my download issue so I'm afraid I can't pass on any helpful info Sad

Am I missing something? Is this a form of time travel like in the movie "Back to the Future"?

Yann I have two questions about the new, upcoming Expert mode.

1) Can you invite other players who don't have expert mode to play one of your scenarios with you? (I have several friends who play but don't have expert mode)

2)Will there be an option to add the Commissar chip (for Estern front), night attack rules (Pacific), and Combat cards (when released) to your scenarios, like the old Expert mode. I ask since the scenario Editor has no way to add these to your battles.

Thanks, and by the way, great job on the new Beta.
Very Happy

In regards to #2, I don't know, but I would guess that the editor is going to be expanded by the time the new expert mode is released, to allow those possibilities.

If it stays consistent with the way Expert Mode has worked (which I think it will), then both players will need to have access to Expert Mode for them to play against each other.
