Memoir '44 Online 1.0 Mon, 06 June 2011 11:48
Dear Memoir '44 Online Officer:

Today marks a very special day: 67 years ago exactly, the Allied Forces launched Operation Overlord, dropping 24,000 airborne troops from the sky and landing another 160,000 men on the coasts of Normandy. By the end of that day, various estimates indicate about 10,000 casualties had been suffered on the Allied side, and another 4,000 to 9,000 on the German side. The liberation of Western Europe had just begun...

So it is with great pride, but also some respect and humility that we chose this date to introduce our own years-in-the-making digital adaptation, Memoir '44 Online version 1.0. As the name of the original board game suggested, one important goal for us all along has been to help keep alive the memory of these historical events and the sacrifice of the men and women of this generation. With the release of the online adaptation of the board game, we hope to further this ambition, and enable many more people to discover or remember this important part of our history, one that changed many things in the lives of our grandparents and parents - and still does for ourselves down to this day.

Over 3 years of development, and 1 year of Beta-testing

We were probably crazy and most definitively naïve when we embarked on this project more than 3 years ago - we vastly underestimated the amount of work ahead of us, especially considering the very small development resources we had at hand. But you don't achieve anything without trying, and our board game community of players was enthusiastic from the get-go!

One key thing that made this project succeed was the Beta-testing. Early Beta-testers can testify how deeply the software evolved and matured during the past 12 months. This is quite unique in video game development: often, major game companies perform a short public beta-testing, more as a marketing pre-launch operation than anything else. Memoir '44 Online was different. The features set, the user interface and our business model, were all profoundly impacted by the (sometimes vocal!) feedback we received from you all. So in a true sense, what you see today in front of you is the direct result of your feedback.

For this reason, our whole Memoir '44 Online development team would like to express our warmest THANKS to each and every one of you! This project has been a blast, and we hope to continue to surprise and delight you in the coming months and years.

Because it's not over!

On the contrary, in many ways, we hope this is only the beginning. While the pace of releases might differ now that we are out of beta, the game will continue to evolve: We already have clear goals for the next version, including a reworked Expert Mode. As usual with software, it is difficult to predict when the next release will be, but know that we are already working feverishly on the next release. Stay tuned on our forums.

During the coming weeks and months, we intend to start spreading the news about the game's release on the web and in print, so expect armies of Cadets to join the game and land on the beaches in waves. We are sure you will welcome them warmly and train them for the challenges that await them in combat.

Now, some good news for you Beta-testers

To mark this special day, we are issuing today a number of unique, never-to-be-reissued Achievements, all specially crafted to recognize the Beta testers, who contributed to this project.

- "D-Day Recon Team" Honor Badge: a bronze badge for players who played at least a Solo game, a silver badge for players who played at least a Multiplayer game, and a gold badge for players who played an Expert game. If you qualify for several of them, you'll get the highest one.
- "Minesweeper" Specialist Badge: for anyone who properly reported (i.e. used our bug report form) at least one bug during the beta period.
- "Lake Toplitz" (Toplitzsee) Specialist Badge: for anyone who purchased at least one pack from us - i.e. who supported our War effort Wink. Depending on the highest pack you purchased, you will receive a bronze, silver, or gold badge.
- "Major Howard" Expert Award: this special award was awarded by the M44 development team to a tiny subset of beta-testers we wanted, for whatever reason, to recognize for their special contribution: your help, support, dedication or insight was unique in some ways and inspired us all. Again, thank you, you guys are wonderful!

Check your Officer Career page to discover which achievements you received: http://www.memoir44-online.com/career

Last not least, another token of our appreciation

http://cdn0.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/fr/img/mo_reconteam2_lores.jpg
- "M44 Recon Team" free real badge: if you were the proud recipient of a "Minesweeper" or the "Lake Toplitz" achievement, you also qualify for this unique metal badge. Simply fill in the order form on http://www.memoir44-online.com/reconteam and we will ship it to you by mail, absolutely free! This will give you a tangible souvenir of the Memoir '44 Online project that you will be able to wear proudly at your next Memoir '44 board game event. Enjoy!

One more detail...

Because it is likely that you will hear from us again in the future for some special testing missions, it is important that you enable the Newsletter option in your Days of Wonder Online profile if you wish to participate.

Otherwise, you will not receive our future beta-testing notices and you might miss some opportunities. We found that many among you had the option OFF in their account, so we made an exception with this e-mail, to make sure that everyone was informed (and we apologize in advance if you did not want to receive this message. In this case you need not change your settings and we will of course abide by your desires).

To enable the option, go to your profile at: http://www.daysofwonder.com/myprofile and check the box called "Receive Days of Wonder special announcements and news by e-mail" at the bottom of the page.

How to upgrade?

As before, simply launch the game. It will automatically detect the new version and download it. Make sure to follow the instructions that appear on your screen, if any.

If you have problems, you can always go to http://www.memoir44-online.com and download the software again. Nothing will be lost, since all your profile is stored in your DOW Online account.

Details of improvements and bug fixes:

- [Frozen river/Retreat] Retreating several hexes over frozen rivers should trigger the frozen river
- [Japanese] attacks with a full-health-bonus-die even when not full-health after Ambush
- Counter-attack after Hill317 recon_left crashes

- [Robot] is not attacking in this battle
- [Achievements] UsPilot should be granted on a counter-attack

And as always:

Make sure you stay tuned on the Memoir '44 Online forum:
http://www.daysofwonder.com/en/thread/?frm_id=71

And above all, have fun!

Is there a bug on D-Day recon bronze - as far as I can see, nobody has been awarded it, which is a bit weird seeing as how everyone had to play a solo game to start (and then again in the load test)

Ignore that, I've just re-read the small print- it's highest badge only Embarassed

Thanks DoW for the hard work in development - as a software developer I know what it takes.

And a special thanks for the new awards - especially the "Major Howard" award - I didn't expect that.

My family and friends would suggest I deserve the "Major Pain in the Arse" award. Shocked Laughing Embarassed Laughing Shocked

Nice work guys! I plan to spend many more hours on the field of battle.

My only regret is that I never finished the expert battle I started playing with Brummbar. It kept crashing and we gave up... Very Happy

Eric, Yann and the DOW Staff:

Thanks for a job well done in the Beta Tests of MM44 and for your feedback in working out all the bugs.

A special thanks for receiving the Maj Howard award, which I did not expect and for all the new achievements, and for the comments on the impact that WWII had for all of us even to this day and for generations to come who will learn more about its history by playing MM44. Cool

I'll look forward to many more years of enjoyment and playing new opponents! Cool

I heard all you had to do was post "Did you send in a bug report?" in response to every thread you see Laughing

Seriously though, they do deserve the recognition for helping out, especially those that helped out newcomers. DoW have played this one well, positive affirmation does wonders for people.

Let me add my GRATS too to the wonderful accomplishment by the DOW team. Nicely timed for D-day which spurred me on to immediately go back to the beach and play to receive my Historian badge.

Great concepts, well thought out and engaging interactions for the users, a Beta program to really be admired, and of course behind it all a really great game.

Best to all of you.

I am proud of everyone who helped make this online game possible.

I have played a lot of the Board game. But you have to have a body near you to play with. The online game has allowed me to make new friends all over the world. To worry about them when Tragedy strikes they area they live in, to look forward to meeting them when traveling to their state for a Convention. To show new folks how to play, and even be corrected on a rule I thought I knew well...

And I am proud to have been a part however small.

Well, I hope I was given the "Major Howard" achievement for more than just reminding everyone to send in their bugs through the Bug Report form! Rolling Eyes Razz

I am sure Jesse. Between the FAQ and playtesting, answering questions in the forums, and generally being a nice guy -- there are many reasons that you would have received this honor.

It is I who should be humbled and honored to be included in such company.

No worries. Very Happy I take it as a good sign that people can give each other a hard time on the forums without anyone taking offense. It's one of the great things about this community; you don't usually have to worry that someone is being rude or mean because it's all done with a fun attitude. Cool

Thank you DoW and the Memoir'44 Team. What a wonderful game! I feel very fortunate to have been a beta tester and have enjoyed the game immensely.

My brother lives about 1400 miles from me in another state. I just purchased so gold for him and walked him through the download for his birthday. We have already started to enjoy playing over the Internet. You guys have given us a great gift through this game, and I jus wanted to say thank you.
