Big Influx of new players Wed, 08 June 2011 17:50
wow! Went online today and there were about a dozen new cadets waiting to play in the lobby, with a further dozen all playing solo games and learning the ropes ! Great news!

Looks like the launch has gone well ... Smile

Expect a much busier lobby from here on, and plenty more opponents ! Smile

Fresh meet for the grinder...

and now that 1.0 is live... Maybe DOW can do something different with the reg codes from the box sets???

Say 500 free GI credits per box? That would encourage some of the online folks to actually buy a copy of the board game???

The $ 30 coupon of the Major pack should go a long way toward encouraging new players curious to try out the board game already. As for the reg codes, they give existing board game owners a 10% discount / coupon applicable toward any purchase.

I just signed up yesterday. I have had the board game since it first came out, but opponents are not always available. This is just what the doctor ordered. Thanks DOW!

I don't think DoW should choose a name for the players...but an e-mail with directions on how to change their name might be in order! My brother said that he got some e-mails after signing up that gave him important links to things like the User Guide and such.

It would be a simple thing to write an e-mail that all new players receive right after signing up that gives them a link to their Account page with directions for changing their User Name to a unique one. It would sure help us remember the new 'faces' better!! Cool

BRILLIANT!!!! Very Happy

Now any player who posts on the forum can easily be directed to change his or her name and picture. Smile I think it might still make sense to include some directions in one of the e-mails they get because a vast majority of new players may never post anything on the forums. Cool

Lots of cadets in the lobby today (tonight for me).

About 10 not (yet) playing and another 10 playing solo.

I was surprised when a cadet asked me for a rematch at St. Mere Eglise and then I ended playing Axis for a second time. After I had selected start-game, for the rematch, the cadet swapped sides so unexpectedly I was playing a second game as the Axis.

I expressed my surprise and then explained that rematch usually means swapping sides. I - politely - recommended that a player should ask his opponent first if they would play the same sides.

Re:Big Influx of new players Sat, 11 June 2011 15:28
We can't forget that many (maybe most) of the new cadets joining Memoir '44 have never played the board game and know nothing about the system. I've recruited 10 friends to join the game and only 1 of them actually knew the rules before they joined up!! Smile

What this means, is that as the experienced players we can't be surprised or frustrated when new players do something unexpected when it comes to the 'etiquette' of the game. It sounds like you did exactly the right thing, Phread, and I'm sure the player didn't realize there was anything strange about his action...in fact I'll bet he was surprised to see that he wasn't playing the same side again and wondered why he had to change the automatic setting. Very Happy

My brother has wanted to play the same side over and over so that he can try to beat me, but also because after only one battle he feels like he's just figuring out an effective strategy! He knows that a rematch normally involves switching sides because I've told him but his preference with me is still to replay the same side... Razz

I think it's a good idea to approach every cadet as if Memoir '44 Online is their first experience with this great game! Things we take for granted will probably need to be explained and we will be answering a lot of basic questions...but at least we get to set the tone for how helpful, patient, and respectful this community is. Smile

Actually, that's what we do: new players receive a welcome e-mail after their first game, with their ID card and links to update their Login Name and Avatar. We encourage them to change them "to make sure your next-of-kin can recognize you, in case a future mission doesn't go down so well" Wink

Perfect!! Smile I like the flavor text that goes with it!! Laughing

So now we can all just gently remind the cadets with 'player#####' to check their e-mail and change their User Names if they aren't sure how. Great work, DoW. It appears that you do a great job welcoming the players into the game once they've joined! Cool

what is this about 10 percent off for owners of the board game?

i have almost all of the boxed expansions plus some others...i bought the major pack, got the coupon and used it for the campaign book...but no where did i see anything about a break for those of us who own the board games.

where is that shown?

The 10% off would be for people who registered their base game or another big game. You just input the internet code that you'll find on the back of the rule book. You can apply the 10% discount to any purchase, including GI... Smile
