Ticket to Ride - local multi-player Thu, 19 May 2011 03:31
I saw a review within the iOS app store that Ticket to Ride has no local multi-player? How would that make sense? A multi-player board game that can't work with friends that come around?

If this is indeed true, DOW - please let us know whether it's planned or not.

thanks

You're right, it has no local multi-player option. My question would be, how can the iPad run a local multi-player game without the players all being able to see your cards?

I guess it could have some kind of delay between players to allow you to pass the iPad around (looks like I just answered my own question)...and maybe that's what they'll do, but for now you have to be online to play other humans.

We did not initially plan to implement local multiplayer on a single iPad for a simple reason: Ticket to Ride is made of micro turns (pass and play would drastically slown down the gameplay) and there's a lot of hidden information: cards in hands, tickets in hand.

3 ways to handle this case:
1. We implement pass and play (any player gives the iPad to the next one once his turn ends). We think the game experience would suffer a lot from that (the action which is most often done is cards picking, 2 in a turn).
2. We add mini player docks all around the map, and players can click on "Watch my Cards" Button that would reveal his private information. It's pretty much like the score button implemented in Small World for iPad. But unlike this game, there's a lot of stuff to show: the wagon cards, the tickets. And we would have to remove the cool feature that highlights the cities to join on the map.
3. We support a rack system with an iPhone/iPod Touch by player. It would make sense but it's only purposed for a small part of our audience. That's why it has not been defined as a key feature for the 1.0.

Despite any slowness it might introduce, I would really like to see an option for local multiplayer games. I like the idea hidden trays that pop out. I think the choice to deal with the slowness to have the ability to play the game locally and socially (particularly for situations where bringing out the physical board game isn't feasible like a car trip) should be up to the end user.

I'd also like to see pass-n-play for the Small World app expanded to more than 2 players (and an online multiplayer aspect there could be a great addition as well).

The obvious -- although possibly difficult -- solution is to do what they did with Scrabble ... release an iPod Touch app for the rack and let that interact with the iPad game. My wife and I have various generations of iPod touches and would love to play Ticket To Ride with the iPad as the playfield and the touches as the controllers.

I just wanted to add another request for local multiplayer support; my girlfriend and I play Smallworld on the iPad a lot, especially when we travel, so we were really disappointed to find that local multiplay hasn't been included in TtR.

Please can we have it added in a future update, by any of the means suggested!

Here is another request for pass and play multiplayer. I think people who would play multiplayer Ticket to Ride on iPad would not be bothered by the game taking a bit longer.

Thanks for a great implementation of the game!

I'd like to support the option as well. Despite the argument against local pass-and-play interrupting the "micro turns", the board game has been a HUGE hit amongst my nieces and nephews and I was looking forward to playing it on the iPad during our summer trip together.

Without local multiplayer (or any way to play together), it's pretty much a bust for me. Playing with strangers online is ok, but it's just not the same.

Additionally, requiring more technology to play a game that is suited to a single device seems ridiculous to me. The point of it isn't just to play the game on a fancy device - it's the ability to play it anywhere without having to set up a board.

If you tell me I have to get an iPad and 3 iPhones/iPods to play a game with 4 friends/family, then the game is a complete bust.

Having a system similar to Small World, where the next player touches a button to start their turn, might be slow but it will be a lot of fun for local players.

On a related topic, will there be an option to select who I want to play with, should one of my friends acquire the game for their iPad? I see no way of adding friends, or requesting a game via GameCenter, etc.

Local Multiplayer would be great! Even a way to search for a friend on the online multiplayer. That way if you have two iPads you can play against each other.

Inside the Restaurant, you can add anyone you see to your Buddy list by selecting their name than adding them.

I'm lucky enough to have 2 iPads, but I still would like to see that as an option.

Carcassonne has short turns as well, but that doesn't take away from that kind of multiplayer being offered.

I'd add my voice to this request. While passing around the iPad may not be ideal - it's great for camping, trips, restuarants etc... those times when you want to do something but don't have a board game packed in a bag! Smile

I'd love to see local multi-player - maybe Scrabble style where either use an iPod/iPhone or else a local tray that hides when not the relevant persons turn.

just want to say though - fantastic development of the app. You've raised the bar on game play on the iPad.

Please add local multiplayer.

The trick with à iPhone is very good but maybe not very practical. We have à iPad and 2 iPhone so for us it is à option.

I second that. my husband and i love the boardgame and recently purchased the ipad and would lve to play Ttr on it - i thought we could do a local game on it but when i tried i failed - really disappointed since i thought that would be an option don't know if i had bought it knowing we can't play together on the ipad.

although i'd like the recommendation someone suggested with connect ipod touchs or similar to the ipad to play in multiplayer mode, since we acctually already own 2.

Agreed! Local multiplayer or pass and play is very much needed, even if the game goes slowly.

Small World for iPad supports pass and play (but sadly, it only supports two-player games, whether in solo play or pass-and-play, which limits the variability in gameplay available from the physical board game).

I would love some kind of iPod / iPhone rack system something like scrabble did. I know it's not suitable for all but most of my friends have either an iPhone or iPod.

DoW: Please mark me down as being completely indifferent to local multiplayer, a feature which, at best, will end up working about one-tenth as well as the other posters in this thread seem to envision.

I'd much rather see you throw your resources at new expansions, bug-fixes, and full GameCenter integration.

This game is also featured on XBOX 360 and on that platform there is support for local multiplayer.

Its been a while since I played it but on XBOX you have the benefit for multiple controllers. If you have more than one that is.

But all players share the same screen. There is no hidden information. Its all presented right there on the screen. The only thing thats hidden is if you have more than one destination available. But all the station high lights are shown on screen as you browse through the destination cards. And also when you select new destination cards.

What I'm trying to say is that this game works even if all the private stuff from the board game version is open for everyone to see.

So really I'm for either the XBOX version where everything is in the open or the Pass'n'Play option. A turn ends with the screen darkening so you cant make out anything on the board and a message saying 'Pass the device to the next player' and when that player presses OK he is shown his stuff and decides what to do.

I understand that this was not on your most important feature list, but it is indeed a very important feature. Man I loved when me and my girl bashed it out on the XBOX local multiplayer style.

And now that you mention it.. How cool would it be if you created an iPhone/iPod rack app for all the private information.
Me and all my boardgame playing friends have iPhones or iPod touch and we just recently tried out PadRacer. That is an awesome game idea. And when I say 'game idea' I mean: Lets face it... the implementation of that game sucks Smile Its a great idea that could have been great if implemented correctly.

Thats my 2 cents and I'm sure you will know which steps to take.

See Carcassone and Settlers of Catan for two very good implementations of this MUST HAVE feature.

Here is another request for multiplayer.
Basically all methods would work and best would be you implement all so everyone Ca'n pick what works best for him.
I would prefer:
A) being able to Conner two iPads via Bluetooth or WLAN
B) using the iPhone (or another iPad) for my cards, etc.

Again, all methods should be implemented and probably being able to be combined.

Please implement ASAP. I would love to play one of my favorite boardgames on vacation as well

I bought this to play with my family - because! - its a famiy game.
Im not interested in playing people I don't know.
Id rather it run slow and be able to pass it around the table than
to have it the way you have now.

I can't see this affecting the game experience too much. Most of my sessions with the physical game involve players who suffer from analysis paralysis, so a few extra seconds to pass the unit isn't terrible.

I prefer the "rack" method, myself.

I'd love to see local multiplayer as an option on the iPad. While I'm very happy playing with people online, there will be times where I don't have wi-fi and would like to connect via Bluetooth, or I want to play with someone who doesn't have an iPad (since I don't own the board game itself, that's not a fallback option for me).

1. Not too much of a problem with my experiences playing Settlers of Catan. Especially if you're sitting close and don't need to pass it too far. Would love to see this as an option.

2. Not so hot on this idea.

3. A rack system would be a great idea as well! In my family, we have 3 iPads but 4 iPod Touches so one more could immediately play.

Not only would it take longer but if you had more than 2 players you would not know what face-up cards a player took as you may not have see then cards. I find knowing this important, especially if the color they picked up was the color I was wanting.

The rack solution is obviously the best solution for "local multiplayer" in TtR. Even when having a single iPad and only one iPod Touch / iPhone you will be able to play five people, by just passing the iPhone around. Everyone else can watch what's happening (which cards are picked, where trains are placed, etc) on the iPad on the table.

So +1 for hidden information on a separate device (or devices if you have more than one). Smoothest, easiest and won't disrupt the gameplay significantly.

I too would like to play with my friends locally. However we don't need a pass-and-play option. Just let us choose our online opponents (through game center?) -- we have 3 iPads in the house so it would be fun to play against each other. All the fun of a board game, without the mess to clean up afterwards!

Hi player760880,

You can play "locally" with your 3 iPads in your house if you own an internet connection.
Just go to the restaurant to invite your friends, either via DOW's invitation system or by using Game Center.
