Stalingrad v2.0 Thu, 08 September 2011 18:48
I recently uploaded the map Stalingrad V2.0 to SFTF.

Please let me know if you like it or not and what you would like to see changed.

The road should have been a winter railroad but that seems not to be supported. (which is weird 'cause the scenario editor supports it yet).

I've tried to follow history close. I think I've succeeded but wonder what you guys think about it.

The scenario editor supports all terrain! This is because up until just a little while ago, the only way to play a scenario was to lay out the tiles on the board...so all of the tiles, units, and rules were made available.

Just because we can now use it to create online battles, doesn't mean they took out terrain that isn't programed yet...but eventually all of the tiles and units and such should be available for online Expert Battles. Smile

I played it from each side, winning 7-5 as the Russians and losing 6-7 as the Germans. Both games were a lot of fun and both were close the whole game.

I noticed there is a field bunker on a city ruins hex on the Russian left. I would suggest picking one or the other - because the terrain protections are the same, but their rules conflict on whether a unit moving in can battle or not. I noticed this and tried it just to see which rule wins, and the city ruins rule took precedence so I could not battle.

Just to avoid confusion, I'd remove either the ruins or the bunker. Fun scenario though, thanks!

tx for the replies guys!

It isn't east, trying to publish a board with an editor which let you setup a lot of tiles which can't be played in the online game. Once finished and trying to go public, I get the message it is not possible but not why is aint possible. What follows is a serie of failure, picking up tiles from the board until it can be put online.
Why not instead make a small note on the tiles that cannot be played online yet, or better: Make an extra tab for selecting only tiles which already can be played online.

I'll look into the bunker, Think it stands there quite nice (for the looks), but if rules collide, it indeed might go. Maybe I'll put in a warning in the scenario.

If DoW added the features you're requesting, the current system of Expert Mode would still be in development. Razz The eventual goal is to have all of the tiles and units work online, but to allow players to start creating and posting their battles sooner (rather than later) they opened up the Expert Mode with the understanding that some features won't work properly yet.

Eric, from DoW has said that a conservative way to ensure that everything works is to only use tiles that are in the base game. Now clearly there are more tiles out there that work, but the idea is that not all of the features are ready!

Personally, I would rather DoW continue working on the game, rather than listing the features that work or don't work on Expert mode...but I can understand how it would be frustrating to create a battle and then discover it doesn't work online. Be patient; eventually all of the tiles will do what they are meant to. Smile

You're absolutely correct, but is this a one man project? The only thing to do is to chance the pictures from the not working tiles for pictures with a red cross on is (or something like that) That's done in a few hours. There's nothing to be changed in the code...

I really think DoW should look better into the matter. Memoir '44 is a potential cash cow, but it has to be milked careful. Now the extra's from the expert pack do not work 100%. People working on a scenario might quit if they don't get it working over and over again.
The SFTF section is in my opinion one of the best thing about this game, it keeps people in the game instead of losing them along the way to another online game. In contrary, expert players will become ambassadors for the game leading more troops to the front.

BTW: Can I only post one scenario online? I'm working on a three episode eerie about the forgotten battle of operation Aintree in the Netherlands.

These are good points, and things that I'm sure DoW has thought of as they figure out what to work on each day. I don't know for sure, but I suspect that DoW chose to push the current Expert Mode out before it was completely ready so that players could begin creating their scenarios online. However, it was always clearly said that the Expert Mode was not finished...in fact they said that to be sure, we should only post scenarios with basic rules.

Being excited about publishing scenarios, people (including me) have ignored the advice about sticking to the base game and we see some very cool scenarios out there...but it means that players have to experiment with which rules work and which ones don't. Rather than the crew spending 4 hours marking which features work and which don't, why don't we just stick with easy battles for a while until the full version comes out in a little while?

Another thing to remember is that the number of players who have access to Expert Mode scenarios and posting their own battles online is a relatively small (but vocal) group of people. It looks like DoW is still working to bring in and support new players by creating more scenarios and simple badges. I expect we'll see more exciting things soon!!

You can only post one scenario at a time for us to play online. This is to keep the system from being flooded by scenarios from a small group of people and to encourage people to work really hard on a scenario before they post it. So as you finish your scenarios, you can post them or rotate through them any time you want.
