No new expansions for Memoir board game this year? Fri, 09 September 2011 17:35
It's clear from the announcement below that DoW have been concentrating on developing the online game. Could this explain the lack of activity on an expansion for the "real" game?

What's coming next?
A combination of factors (vacations, work on our server infrastructure paving the way for future growth, etc...) has held us back a bit over the summer. Our focus remains on delivering an updated version of the Scenario Editor and completing the Expert mode to support the same feature set that is available to Official scenarios.

DoW have their (successful) business model to follow, so this is not a complaint or criticism.

Re:No new expansions for Memoir board game this year? Fri, 09 September 2011 19:42
I'm still hoping we'll see an expansion this year, but I guess time is slowly running out. I think it's possible that because of all the time they've put into Memoir '44 Online, they haven't been able to get an expansion ready, but I imagine that even more time and energy went into the three Ticket to Ride maps that are coming out.

Even if we don't see anything for the tabletop version of Memoir '44 this year, I think the game line is still going strong. With Memoir '44 Online out, I would imagine the game system is getting more attention and interest than it has in a long time and I would guess that translates into sales. If that's the case, we'll see a lot more Memoir expansions in the future!! Smile

I guess we'll just have to wait and see, though. Cool

Yeah beginning to look doubtful. I was hoping for at least a new battle map this year Rolling Eyes The same 17 Official scenarios are starting to get stale.

It has been announced that "The Invasion of Crete" scenarios from the WBC 2011 will be released in a format similar to the Vecors Campaign.

At little more than nothing - but not a full expansion.

Give 'em time. Maybe something will come.

If you go to the News tab, you'll see that last year Winter Wars was announced at the end of September. In 2009, SoS was announced in mid-October.

That's a good point, Sam! There's still time before Christmas for a surprise expansion...and with us, hope springs eternal!! So we'll just keep hoping and I'll just keep playing Memoir '44 Online when I have time to pass the days. Very Happy

Re:No new expansions for Memoir board game this year? Sat, 10 September 2011 16:13
My two cents worth on this is that we have some of the best scenarios being developed and published by the players. With the official scenarios, some of the user developed scenarios (Historical) are just as good as the official scenarios. We are to the point of developing our own campaigns now. We can obtain miniatures and paint them to look like any nationality we want. we have the players that are very adept at developing efficient house rules to expand or to make scenarios more playable and adaptable. We have game board for original size, larger size and overlord size. Most of us have multiple boards of which we could basically build to any size.
My question, not to be controversial, is "Where is DOW to go next with this system." How far can a manufacturer go with one system before it becomes repetitive and repugnant.
I really enjoy playing this system, but really, where else can they effectively go without becoming a miniature system, a war game system that is overloaded with rules, or just simply putting out new items to get money from their loyal players?????
I am truly saying all of this in all of the kindness that I can say. I am not trying to nitpick or find fault.

It sounds like you don't need any more expansions! If you're happy to keep playing the current Official Battles and enjoy the SFTF, then you're luckier than a lot of us! You'll save money and you won't need any future expansions. Smile

It's true that many fans of the game are very good at developing scenarios and campaigns. The creativity of this community is often staggering, and I enjoy reading about the great things people are doing (from 3D terrain to Overlord Breakthrough maps). But the production quality is naturally lower for home-grown stuff and I've often found that the play-testing level isn't always there. Personally, I would rather play Official scenarios and campaigns with my limited time; it sounds like you are enjoying the unofficial stuff for both of us. Very Happy

I'm so glad you are comfortable enough to ask a tough question like this, and I don't know that I have an answer. Maybe we don't need an answer. I would say that 'repugnant' might not be the word you're looking for, as it means "causing disgust or aversion; offensive or repulsive". That seems like some pretty strong language, so maybe it's not what you meant to say...or maybe it is. Maybe it disgusts you when a company puts out too many products, who knows. Smile

As with any product that a company makes, fans can choose to buy it or not. I don't think any company, including DoW will just 'put out new items to get money from their loyal players'. Any expansion, even one that isn't very popular, is developed and produced with the fans in mind...so even though a lot of people didn't like the Campaign Bag and some cried that it was just an attempt to 'steal their hard-earned money', it was a product created to give us a bag to carry all our Memoir stuff in. Sure it will make some money for DoW, but it's always our choice to buy something.

I don't know where Memoir '44 can go from here. It seems like many of the expansions are going to continue to develop the elements that have already been introduced; more Campaign Books (we hope), more Battle Map packs, more figures, etc. But I see no problem with filling out a certain direction of the game...and like every product, people can choose not to buy something they feel like they don't need.

In my experience, though, Richard Borg and the great fans of this board game are more creative than me. I thought we had everything the game needed...and then the Campaign Book came out. I thought I knew how things were going to develop for Memoir '44...and then Richard revealed the Breakthrough format! So I won't be surprised if he still has some tricks up his sleeves, and I look forward to discovering them! Cool

you are exactly correct. Repugnant was not a word i should have used. I should have stopped at repetitive.

When I bought Breakthrough, (which really needs the breakthrough cards from Winter Wars), I found there was just so much to set-up and then many new rules (from the expansions) to keep track of. Although the online game doesn't do Breakthrough, it has a big enough player pool that you can go online and find an opponent and play one or two games fairly quickly. I'd call that quick set-up. It knows nearly all the rules (but Blitz air strike doesn't ignore sandbags like it should), so you can learn them in combat.

I played the board game 50x with my friend face-to-face this year, but 300x with people online since the beginning of August.

If there was a board game expansion I'd buy, it would be a revised Overlord with the cards and all the maps and figures from those battle packs in one base game-sized set.

Yet due to all the rules for new figures, it would be quicker and easier if they added Overlord to the online game. I bet 4-8 people would jump in for an online game, too.

I agree that memoir has a lot of little rules and things to keep track of. What I'd like to see in the near future is a monster rulebook. It would need to have every official rule ever written for memoir and a book like this would need a killer index.

Jesse, thanks again for the updated Player Aid. I find it invaluable. Your contributions to MEM44 are very well appreciated.

Also, I have to agree with Nyaard, Expert Mode is the way to go. Quality new scenarios from the public will keep the game fresh. I think once they have all the expansions available, it will explode. Can you imagine playing a different scenario every night with your friends? New tactics and strategy will be a nightly requirement. There will literally be hundreds of scenarios to choose from. Yes, some of the quality will be poor but you'll get to know the dozens and dozens of people who spend time to write quality stuff. I can't wait!

I'm glad you find the Player Aid useful. It's something I use whenever I need to remind myself about a rule, so I'm glad other people use it as well. Razz

You're talking about Expert mode in the Online game, but we already have all sorts of great scenarios available in SFTF for anyone who wants to play them...and they're all free! Cool

I would like to see a reprint of the air pack.
I would also like to see just the plastic army packs. so if your playing a campaign with a ton of tanks your covered.
Perhaps a expansion into the Burma theater.

I just discovered Memoir 44 about 2 months ago so for me its like whoa there is a lot out there!

No doubt, this is great job rasmussen81! I use this Player Aid often, but it doesn't contain very important rules.

For example - Patrol Cars. If you play the snenario with those units you should know first that:
Wire - Patrol Cars may not remove wire.

Railroad Bridges & Railroad Tracks - Patrol Cars moving onto a
Railroad Track or Railroad Bridge must stop.

Infantry Assault - Patrol Car units may be ordered by this Command
card and move up to 4 hexes and battle.

Behind Enemy Lines, Dig-in, Medics & Mechanics - Patrol Car units
may not be ordered using any of these Command cards.

Collapsible Rafts and Boats - A Patrol Car unit may not be transported
by Collapsible Rafts or Boats.

Hospital Recovery, Oasis Recovery - A Patrol Car unit may not recover
in a Hospital or Oasis.

Reinforcements - A Patrol Car unit may not be used as Reinforcement.

That's why we neeeeeed all the rules and even answers from FAQ held in just one place - The Great Book of Rules.
This is what I imagine DOW can bring us soon...

Yes I have DaD with PC and HT. I only wanted to say that it could be great to see all these rules in one place. I have a binder with the best scenarios, campaigns, Jessie's FAQ etc. reprinted. And I hold it in one place. I try to not use the official guides. I don't like to taking break when I'm playing and searching for the right rulebook, the right notes. Jessie's FAQ and Player Aid is my base, but it would be nice to see something BIG from DOW.

I'm glad you find the FAQ and Player Aid useful! The problem with putting those kinds of things into a printed book is that they are constantly being changed, updated, and added to. If DoW printed a big book of all the Rules, the FAQ and all of the Official Scenarios, it would be outdated within a year when they released the next expansion. Razz

The way things work right now, they can add new Summary Cards to the web site, I can update the FAQ periodically, and my Player Aid can be changed to include all of the new rules and units. All people have to do is print off the modified pages or update the PDF they have on file...so I'm not sure if we'll see a big 'rule compendium' expansion anytime soon. Smile Sorry.
