Hey everyone,

If you haven't already seen, it looks like Memoir '44 Online is now up on Steam! I think we may see a new wave of raw recruits hitting the beaches!! Cool

Great news!
Is it possible to merge the DoW-account with the Steam-account?

I am not familiar with the "steam" platform.

When someone is playing M44 Online on steam will they be able to play against someone playing "regular" M44 Online?

The concept of "steam" powered tanks is interesting.

Yes, people downloading the game from, or connecting through, Steam (which is widely viewed as thedigital distribution gaming platform on Windows) play on the same servers as everyone else.

Just think of it as an opportunity to massively increase the visibility of Memoir '44 Online. Razz

Was just online and could see a lot of Cadets online. So I guess this is why.

Memoir 44 online is the only online game I play, so I am not familar with Steam. I assume there are many others like me (who are addicted to Memoir 44), but is there any advantage for us in setting up a Steam account?

Downloaded the steam game, but the DOW version has kicked me back to cadet and gold is gone. Steam people are complaining that is what is billed as free to play really isn't. First guy I played on steam quit when he was losing...never happened on DOW. Deleted both versions...I'm done with Memoir '44

Login through steam creates automatically a new account. If you want to find back your GI and rank, just launch the dow version, click on logout when in the menu then log in with your dow account (the one you used to post this message).

Brice - what you wrote is confusing, even to me.

When you say "then log in with your dow account" is that on steam or "normal" M4 online?

Everything is kept on your account, so it's just a matter of connecting with the correct account (ie the DoW one to keep the previous GI count and game history).

Whatever the version you launch, you can always log out in the main menu, and log in with your regular DoW account. Note: when launching the steam version, and if you're logged with your steam account, the application will by default log you under the steam account on our server, not your dow account.
(not sure it's more clear than my first attempt)

Thanks Brice, it is more clear to me.

A steam user can log out - on steam - and then log in again user their DoW account login name and password to use their DoW account.

Thanks

While I'm excited to see this in Steam, it's very unfortunate that the gold I've already bought doesn't carry over, nor do the achievements I've gotten. This wouldn't be AS bad if some of them weren't Beta achievements (Speaking of, WHY are the Beta Achievements even listed on Steam if no one will ever have them??)

I like the Steam platform a lot as most of my games are on there, and wish my achievements would transfer (not to mention the gold I've already bought.)

Oh well... at least it's some fresh meat. Twisted Evil

Is it simply not possible to transfer gold from the existing account to the Steam account? That would at least take some of the sting out.

Also while I'm at it, why not have the "SHOW" tab default to "ALL" instead of "Fleeing France"? Just wondering if this confuses new people. (Granted, I see that the France scenarios are simpler, but still.)

Just played one of the new cadets from steam - Juno Beach - I was the Axis - his choice - and I crushed him. Just stomped him into the ground. Poor fellow. He complained about always having bad luck then left. No rematch, nada.

But who am I to complain? It's hunting season and DOW just stocked the forest! Time to go earn some of those hard-to-get medals.

Guess we'll be seeing more red dots, and using the ignore button. Let's hope "ignore" gets fixed so these people get the decline response automatically and you don't play with them by mistake anymore.

Hey, most of the guys on now actually have names. I'm really tired of playing player######.

Login to your DoW-account through steam is possible if you change the config file:
You can find it here:
Steam\steamapps\common\memoir '44 online\
You only have to change the first two lines:
user=xxxx
password=xxxx

But unfortunately it doesn't take your achievments over to steam.

Sadly this doesn't surprise me too much! Confused Not that the new influx of players are bad people, I just am always impressed with the quality of people in the Memoir '44 community!! But if we all encourage them to keep the language clean (especially here on the forums) I think people will get the idea.

Granted, I've politely asked players to not swear during a battle and then been cussed out because of it...so there will be some of those people. Rolling Eyes But I just add them to my "Ignore" list for future games and move on. Most people are very willing to respect the norms of a community once they find out what those norms are. Cool

Hello guys,

Just a quick note to thank you all veterans for helping the newbies on the chat during yesterday. Lots of these new Cadets are obviously younger people who don't even care about watching the tutorial video, so it does not help Rolling Eyes. Therefore your warm and friendly welcome is much appreciated!

Here at DoW we are very excited about the success of the game on Steam, and we work late every day to make sure that the servers sustain the load. The next few days are sure going to be interesting Wink

See you on the HQ chat!

Wow so a not free to play game gets put under free to play.
Then I sit through the boring video tutorial.
Then I play the starting map but its a completely unbalanced map, I get total garbage cards vs the comp getting great ones, and then to top it off when I lose it shows that the comp RANDOMLY rolled almost twice as many successful kill dice as I did!

So you want me to pay you real world money CONSTANTLY for a terrible graphics facebook wanabe game! Good luck with taking money from the suckers out there!

Well i registered just to answer to this one. I'm a steam user too, and most of us are actually normal, unlike this rage induced individual, and can write a sentence without it souding overly dramatic. I guess you will be getting a lot of new players from steam, but don't worry we are not all like that Very Happy

So anyway i actually liked the game. Kinda sad that it is not actually F2P, but most F2P games aren't "free" anyway cause you have to buy content to get anywhere in the game. I think im gonna be playing it a lot once i go thru the rest of my games, maybe even buy some of that gold.

Welcome, duhsveti, and thank you for taking the time to register and let us know that not all Steam players are like that. Smile It's great to have so many new people playing Memoir '44 Online and visiting the forums here. It's good to welcome all of you (even the dramatic ones...who probably won't stick around too long anyway). Razz

Up until now, most of the players who frequent the battle field and the forum are board-game players who often have heard of or played Memoir '44 before. I suspect it's a steep learning curve to figure out the rules and strategies for Memoir '44 if you aren't familiar with this system. If you need any help, just let one of us 'higher ranked' players know and we can point you in the right direction. This is a very friendly community, full of helpful people!

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying the game and I hope you stick around (both here and in the game). It's great to add new members of the community, no matter how long you decide to stay! Cool

Thank you, and the whole team for breaking it open to a larger public. More potential opponents means more potential fun. I think that it was to be expected that in this great community, veterans would not think twice about helping out cadets.

Yann

And also thank you for working late and keeping the servers stable.
I can imagine your servers being under alot of stress for the moment; currently there are about 750 players online.
Still, even with all your hard work, the game does seem to be reacting alot slower than it used to.
This is really regrettable, because of 2 reasons: the new players don't get to see the game in it's full glory and the veteran players might get annoyed by it.
I must admit that if these performance issues drag on, I myself might start playing less, and might think twice about renewing my gold when I run out.
I am not to that point yet - this is a great game after all, and a perfect game to play online - but I might get to that place.
So I really hope you can straighten this out. Maybe this will partially straighten itself out, when all those new players run out of free gold. We made a big jump from 50 to 750 players online at the same time. If in a few days the number stabilizes around 250, we came out ahead and the performance might be better.

Keep up the good work and thank you for your great customer service!

Re:Memoir '44 Online Hits the Steam Thu, 13 October 2011 22:43
So far my experience with the new cadets is 50% 50%

One of them knew the boardgame and therefore played admirably for a cadet. I gave him lots of advice and think he will be a very good player once he figures out the controls and some details about online M44 (and if he sticks around of course, but I have a feeling he might.)

The other found out it was not free and aborted the game at that point.

I think the representation on Steam should be better. They expect a free game and find out they have to pay later. And who gets the abuse? Poor little defenseless me! Rolling Eyes Smile

I have no knowledge how Steam works and what's possible. But I do think that the customer should be correctly informed about what he/she is getting (into). If that would be possible we would not get those disappointed cadets over here. But players that are well informed about what will be needed in the future. (Money!!!)

I for one can imagine their disappointment, because they have been told it's free and then somebody tells them they will have to pay after all. I would not like that at all.

Speaking for myself: I came in here knowing that once the free ingots were gone I would have to buy new ones and did so gladly. I was informed about this before I even played my first free game. Thus my expectations were met exactly and I was (and still am) a happy customer (expecting to pay more money in the future for more ingots).

All basic customer handling stuff in my experience: tell them what is going to happen and they will make informed choices. "Lie" to them and they will be upset. (And yes they do perceive it as lying.)

Hi Quit2, thanks for your kind words!

We made a number of fine tuning earlier today, to make sure we would not break under the load - which as you noted, increased today by over 20% compared to yesterday.

Among these changes, some were dedicated to improve the in-game slow-down that you mentioned. We already see some results, even if they might not always be visible to the eye. But for the servers, it makes a big difference, like life and death. Smile

Currently, there is a very large influx of new players, because the game is new on the Steam platform and the free download makes it very attractive to everyone. This will probably decrease and stabilize after the coming week-end. So this, combined to our ongoing infrastructure efforts, should make your life much better in a short time. Smile

Thanks your patience.

I met a Captain on the battlefield today who on one hand thought it was great, because he would get to Major much sooner. But on the other hand had the feeling he was cheating because it was so easy beating up the new cadets.

My advise: beat them up anyway Very Happy , but explain how you are doing it and make them understand the complexity of the game a little better. Hopefully they will stick around so there will be much enthusiastic players in the lobby every time I check in.

Although I admit having less patience (not no patience but decidedly less) with players who did not bother to enjoy the tutorial. Equal beating up but less advise for those. Mad Very Happy

All in all I think it is a nice influx of players and if a part of them sticks around all for the better. It is up to us to "teach" them how we like it here on M44 on-line so the atmosphere, mood and play stay the same, only with more people.

And yes, I know I have been around only for a month or so, but you welcomed me so warmly in this community that I feel I have been around much longer. (Oh, now I feel tears welling up. I better stop. Very Happy )

You hit it dead on...a lot of these new players are coming from a very different community and even if they are nice people, they don't know what to expect from this 'computer game' or this community of players. It's our job to welcome them and teach them gently how things work here in the world of Memoir '44.

Let's not forget that we were having very similar conversations about the cost and how to play the game no so long ago! Very Happy

Cadets can still beat you. I played a "steam cadet" yesterday who soundly beat me as I had a terrible run of dice and cards.

There may be more cannon fodder, but as always there are games where you are also the cannon fodder.

More importantly I try to offer the cadets some help. I ask if they would like some help, or hints - after all we all started as cadets didn't we?

Eric,

I think Jesse has played all "standard" scenarios, he has to figure out what wins he needs to make Lt. Col. He has been naughty and let offline life interfere with his online life.
