FED Cup Revival? Possible Variants Thu, 03 November 2011 17:29
Is anyone still (or newly) interested in FED Cup?

If yes, shall we change the format to maybe make it more interesting?

Here's some ideas (short description of the formats, if people are interested I can work out details), tell us what you think about it:

Version 1: FED Cup as it used to be
Sign up as pairs (can be transnational)
A Clash consists of 7 games, 3 TAGs and 4 single games (A1-B2, A2-B1, A1-B1, A2-B2)
Single games count 1 point, TAGs count 2 points
Schedule in RR can be arranged like in League (you have x weeks to play all your matches), for KO 2 weeks time per match (which didn't work too well ...)

Version 2: FED Cup Classic
Sign up as teams (can be transnational, I would not impose any ELO maximum) of max. 5 players
A Clash consists of 5 matches best-of-5: 4 Singles, 1 TAG (or maybe only bo3 for the TAG?)
Each match counts 1 point.
Teams can nominate different players for TAG and singles (lineup to be sent to TD as in NC), a player can be nominated for only 1 or for 2 singles.
Suggested schedule like in NC (as you can play a complete clash with only 2 players and can have up to 5 that should be doable)

Version 3: FED Cup Transatlantic
Like FED Cup Classic but on US and EU map.
2 single-matches played on US, 2 on EU. 1st TAG game US, 2nd EU, 3rd US ...
The same player can be nominated for only 1 single per map.
As a team can have 5 players (or should it be more?) one can still have US-only-specialists.

Version 4: Any other ideas?

---------

Reason why I thought about variants:
*) Scheduling was the main problem in the FED Cup as we had it.
With more than 2 players per team we could go back to 1 week = 1 clash (it works in NC, it works in CL, why shouldn't it work here)
*) TAGs are predominant for the result. Nothing wrong with that, as it originally was meant as mainly a TAG competition. But maybe some people prefer to play more than 1 single game against an opponent.

---------

Just checking on general interest at the moment, if there is any, an appropriate date can certainly be found some time next year (depending on existence and date of CL, SPWC, ...).
Hint: Having the idea doesn't imply one wants to be TD ...

1) Yes, schedule was a pain and killed last 2 FED and 2 FEUD.
Responsability of the players...

2) Other tourneys popped up, then Fed Cup lost its interest in the whirl of an overloaded calendar. Responsability of the community, there.

My 0,01234 cent about the tourney itself :

TAG should still provide a larger portion of a victory over singles and it doesn't prevent indeed from playing more singles. (i'm personally a bit tired of Bo5 - Bo7...tag is really refreshing Very Happy...).

It has to use a simple format, quick and efficient, to find a good place in the calendar, and a good visibilty/interest from the community. A month/5 weeks is a max for a tourney like that.

Why not only TAGS mixing US and euro maps? No need to worry about starters nor singles. Only fun games, relaxed.

Organization has to be light. It's gonna be hard to find someone do line-ups or that kind of stuff.

Small Round Robin groups and a short Ko round would help. Direct Final in case of 8 teams, semis and final in case of more would definitely lighten the program.

2-3 weeks to settle 3 or 4 matches is enough in Round Robin, in that case, more players within a team is most welcome!

About calendar

We, Qorlas and I, are working on the overhaul of the calendar.
Last year was a bit messy.

We are ready to sacrifice 1 season of league a year to let more space for SPWC/EMC/SMC.

A year would look like this (memory, Qorlas could correct me).

Dec-Jan: Multi tourney
Jan-March : League
Apr-May: SPWC EMC SMC
June - Aug : League
Jun-July : AAT
Sep - Nov : NC

CL would overlap league between Januray and march.. It has to be discussed with steven. (Would be nice to reduce the format, 2 months is just too long).
Dunno if Dom wants to launch another Fun Tourney, it would fit in Dec-Jan.
We could therefore find room in May while SPWC&co reach it last rounds.

Would new rules/format bring an uprise of interest with new rules or new format ?

It's always the same players who are involved in alternative tourneys. Die-hard 2er USA would still be hard to convince if they don't change their (narrow Twisted Evil) minds ! And calendar is still pretty busy... Busy players would still pick SPWC/NC as a priority, then league over Fed.

Hi all,

My 2 cents:

1) I love TAGs, so I'm in in any format decided. For me TAG is even better than 2 players because you have options with almost any ticket combination.

2) I would prefer the classic format

3) I have a idea of a new variant, 'blind-TAG', everything works the same except you can't talk with your partner. It can help to fix the only TAG problem (the games need a lot of time, talking, discussing and/or trying to convince your partner). This can be played telling the partner the tix at the start, or not.

Finally, I forfeit one semifinal last time, due to personal problems, hope I'm allowed to play again, but I'll understand if somebody has any problem with this.

hhmm but i think a big point from this fun game is that we speak together and also that we learn how your partner think and maybe we get some new ideas also..
