Replay your Battles with Memoir '44 Online 1.2 Thu, 27 October 2011 11:46
Dear Memoir '44 Online Officers:

After surviving the launch of Operation Steam - and the battalions of fresh Cadets that landed on the beaches as a result - we are now happy to announce the release of version 1.2 of Memoir '44 Online!

What's new?

Because there are now many more players waiting in the Headquarters at any one time, we've added a search field just above the Players list. Just type a few letters of the player's name you're looking for to immediately filter out everyone else in the list.

You can now also send private messages to anyone of your choice, using the new /pm chat command. Simply type /pm @Joe your_message and your_message will be sent to Joe privately. Messages that are intended for you will appear in red in the dialog zone. If the person you are trying to pm has a complicated screen name, you may use auto-complete to type his name: Simply type @ followed by the first letters of your friend's screen name and press the CTRL and SPACE keys simultaneously. The rest of that person's screen name will appear automatically. Pressing CTRL-SPACE again to cycle through all the possible matches for the entered prefix. Example:
/pm @Jo CTRL-SPACE gives: /pm @JohnnyBeGood123

We have also added a few more things to help new players. We made it even clearer that watching the tutorial video is strongly advised, so that Cadets would not skip their instruction. At the end of the rules briefing of each battle, beginners not yet familiar with the rules will now also find download links to the corresponding board game PDF rules - making it easier to learn the game's intricacies. There is also a link to the FAQ that has been added.

The Big One: You can now watch a Replay of all your Battles!

We are also happy and proud to introduce a new feature we've been working on for a while: Battle Action Replays are now available on the Memoir '44 Online Web site. To replay a Battle, simply click on the name of a battle in your Career History. This will take you to the battle's details - just like before. The big difference is that the old static map is now replaced by an interactive map which lets you to replay the whole battle turn by turn! You will see the cards of both players, their moves, battles and dice rolled, the losses and medals gained, etc. for each turn of the game!
This new feature is the evolution of an internal tool we've been using for a while to help us debug various battle rules. We loved it so much, and found it so useful, that we decided to put it in your hands.

Not only is this a great way to learn from Veterans; it will also likely open all kind of possibilities for the community - tournaments replay come to mind, for instance.

To start reviewing the most famous battles of your own career, simply head out to: http://www.memoir44-online.com/career/

Two New Achievements

We released two new Achievements dedicated to the terrible "Meat Grinder" battle. Win this battle from the Allies side to receive the "Flag of our fathers" Achievement, and win it from the Axis side to earn the "Letters from Iwo Jima" one.

Other Improvements

As always with each release, we also fixed a number of bugs and performed a few optimizations. Here is the complete list:

- [Lobby] search players by name
- [Lobby] Add /pm command to the chat for Private messaging
- [Lobby] Add user name auto-completion to chat using the Ctrl Space keys
- [Tutorial] it should be possible to pause the video
- [Tutorial] rename clearly the Skip button into Skip Tutorial, so that beginners know what they are doing
- [Briefing] There should be links to the rules book(s) of the board game
- [Achievement] Flag of our fathers
- [Achievement] Letters from Iwo Jima
- Can't display lots of Achievements in the Officer Career screen
- Server slows down under heavy load
- Server deadlock
- [Rules] In Rzhev, dragging the first card to the board rather than to the commissar should not freeze the game
- Infantry Assault in fallback activation issue
- [Frozen river] winning the game thanks to a frozen river should not freeze the client
- [Expert] should support Allies on top / Axis at the bottom
- [Expert] Crash when loading Expert scenario with a Rail and Road crossing
- [Client] Client should limit the size of the log files
- [Steam] overlay should show up after switching between windowed mode and full-screen mode
- [Steam] Achievements should be synchronized to Valve's servers
- [Medals] Losing a medal in the last action should decrement the loser's number of medals
- [UI] Login view should only display two buttons : Login with Steam, and Login using DoW account

How to upgrade?

As before, simply launch the game. It will automatically detect the new version and download it. Make sure to follow the instructions that appear on your screen, if any.

If you have problems, you can always go to http://www.memoir44-online.com/download/ and download the software again. Nothing will be lost, since all your profile information is stored in your DOW Online account.

And as always:

Make sure you stay tuned on the Memoir '44 Online forum:
http://www.daysofwonder.com/en/thread/?frm_id=71

And above all, have fun!

This replay tool is great. I am loving looking at my old battles. But unfortunately I found some bugs:

The new Replay Display in the Online Version has some errors.

1) My medals are showing up on my opponents medal stand:

http://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/en/battle/?id=26 275425#replay:turn=17

2) Although I have the correct number of medals, they are the wrong type (style) for my side:

http://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/en/battle/?id=26 277316#replay:turn=7

Bug Report also sent, so Ras won't be on my case.
Surprised

Keep up the good work guys, this keeps getting better and better!

This is Wake Island, the only scenario where Axis lands on the beach.
This is NOW fixed.

Do you mean you expects Russian medals?
If so, (and I know it is confusing) , the medals and the logo next to the avatar actually represent AXIS or ALLIED forces but not individual nations.

No nothing that elaborate. However, If I am an Axis Army I collect (Allied Medals) and if I am Allied I collect (Axis Medals). At least this is how it has been played to date. However, in this circumstance, I am the Allied Forces and I have Allied medals on my stand. Like a headhunter collecting the skulls of his own fallen. Just seemed a bit odd.

I am confused.
When I play Pegasus Bridge as the allied forces and I capture the bridge, I get an allied medal that I put on my side of the board which is decorated with allied medals.
I agree that the use of medals is confusing though, we will probably need to rethink the icons used to visualize victory points.

I have to agree with John on this one...when I'm playing Memoir '44, I'm always gunning for medals that match the side I'm playing! I don't try to get an Allied medal as the Axis, or vice versa. Razz Rolling Eyes

I think it's ok the way it is in this respect... Smile

I noticed when running and just in the main screen with no animations running or anything it is using up a chunk of my cpu. Not sure what it is doing, but it is more than any app that is running on my OS X laptop.

Sorry, don't know what I was thinking. I guess because I usually collect the units from the other side I had a visual mental gap and thought "why are my units on my medal stand".

Sorry guys! Embarassed Embarassed

You all have my respect on that!

What is necessary to have the games play? I can see the start boards, but the 'action replay section' is failing to display.

Someone posted a screen shot, so I know what it is supposed to look like.. but it's not what shows on my screen.

No 'play' buttons or turn idents appear in the 'action replay' section. The board is a bit compressed side to side, as well.

Am I missing some kind of plug in or update?

Your battles won't 'play through' on their own...you have to click the little arrow to move the battle on to the next turn. In this way you can review each turn and see what cards both sides had and what the players did on the board.

All you should have to do is click on the battle name that you want to watch and then click through the moves. I'm not sure if this answered your question... Razz

You just need a relatively recent browser.
It has been tested with the latest versions of IE, firefox and safari, but works with most browsers. There is nothing special required, no java, no flash, no plugin.

What browser are you using? What version?

Hey all. Hoping someone can help me with a quick question about the replays.
Are they only for games vs human players or can you view replays against AI as well?

Thanks in advance.

Can anyone explain the following to me?

To win all mediterranean battles from one side gives you a honorary achievement. To win one pacific battle from one side gives you a specialist achievement.
Seems a bit illogical to me.

Not that I am complaining to get new achievements though ...
I still need to battle and lose against a DOW member, to make the shape of my achievement signature prettier Wink
