Online Tournament Thu, 07 April 2005 06:05
I remember seeing in someone's post asking the question but don't remember seeing a response. It would take 11 - 12 games to accomadate a 2 player single elimination for the approximately 4000 people here. It would be signifiacntly less games for a 5 player. Just wondering if this is possible.

Also a feature request. As you already show our total games played, would it be possible to show wins, losses and draws. I'm over 1000 games now and don't feel like paging back to count them all.

Thanks.

I would like to see some kind of online tourney if possible. You could have people register for the tourney, that way you probably wouldn't get an absolutely huge number of people that enter. I don't think that you would get an absolutely huge number of people to join, i'm thinking more in the range of 500-1000 people would actually play. that would only be like 9-10 games to find a winner, and if you space it out over a couple of days you could make it really easy. Seeding would be even easier, because we already all have some sort of rank.

Days of Wonder guys,

Haven't seen an answer to this but you've posted on other posts. Is this feasible and in the works or not?

Thanks

Right now there is no immediate plans to have a tournament structure integrated with the online games. It would take a lot of work to code something that would support hundreds of players in a tournament.

However, anyone who wants to take the initiative could use the "Championships" page in the Community section to schedule an online tournament and invite players to signup. On the backend they would have to determine what type of tournament (single elimination or a number of qualifying rounds) to move onto future rounds, as well as manage the brackets/scheduling of the games. The difficulty would be in getting people to all show up to play their games.

Okay, let's organize one.

How about we start slow. An 8 player tournament with players ranked in the top 100 only.

We'll take the first 8 to reply on this thread and seed them as follows

A 1vs8
B 2vs7
C 3vs6
D 4vs5

On each round we'll reseed. Each round is a best of seven games. Game times can be arranged by the players. Once we've got 8 in we can sort out the full details.

I'm in... ranked 9th.

Achim, Bum Bum, we want you. Come show us how good you are. Or maybe you don't want to see me for 7 games. I wouldn't.

I like to play ranked players when possible too so I called him out last night also, but he never responded. Odd.

Roaring Possum just said he played him in a 5 player and he scored 150. A person playing five player could not have this ranking and I can't see scoring 150. Were the opponents blind or were all the rest him.

Re:Online Tournament Thu, 28 April 2005 08:03
So far we have:

thekid - 4th Twisted Evil
Zugbegleiterin - 8th
rek18{blöcker} - 9th
br'er rabbit - 31st
Optimus - 33rd
SKMorefield - 55th
El Soyokaze - 69th

Waiting for one more. It'd also be nice to get a couple of people willing to do a bit of work monitoring the games or adjudicating problems. To a large extent it'll just be honour system, but we should have some idea how we'll deal with conflicts (ahem) if they arise. Ideally it'll be a serious but good spirited competition and there'll be no need.

The most likely complication will be scheduling. I think a week for each round would be good. If all games are done for one round we can start the next right away. The more we can pre-schedule things the better since people may like to observe. Unfortunately because it is possible to cheat it'll be up to the higher ranked player to decide if they are willing to allow observers (see the cheating thread for a full explanation of why this is so).

I assume starting player is random? I think it is a distinct advantage to go first. We can keep restarting until we get what we want or just leave it up to chance and hope it all evens out over 7 games. The tickets and cards are already an element of luck anyway.

Any of the other competitors have ideas for format/rules/process?

I think a four player tournament would be harder to organize, but depending on how this one goes I might be willing to give it a shot afterwards. Someone else could organize it now...

Re:Online Tournament Thu, 28 April 2005 09:35
These are the few suggestions I have. Higher ranked player sets up the game, I will turn observation off. I don't think we need anyone monitoring this, it should be fairly simple and updates to the series can be posted here. Everyone here plays a lot and I would imagine accept their loss graciously. Plus the DOW guys could go look at the records anyway. Let the computer randomly decide who goes first. Lastly, and this probably applies to me mostly is disconnects. I play on a wireless modem as I usually only play when feeding one of my triplets. They help me with the tough moves. Every once in a while I get disconnected and accept the losses that come with it as most players don't know me. Now this could happen to others as well, my suggestion is once the bot appears, for the other person to leave as the game can be resumed at that point in time by clicking on your games history. If people have a problem with this I won't fight it as it does not happen very often,(that's probably why rek has given me the devil horns) but I don't want to win this way if someone gets disconnected. Rek thanks for the comments. Flattery will get you everywhere. I'm blushing. Good luck to everyone. This should be fun. Cmon where's that eighth person. A four person tournament would be tough as it's taking awhile just to get 8 here. Maybe next one we should post a message on the other language boards.

Ok, playercrams makes eight.

Here are the matchups:

thekid - playercrams
Zugbegleiterin - El Soyokaze
rek18{blöcker} - SKMorefield
br'er rabbit - Optimus

I'll start a new thread for the tournament (1st Tournament). If you pre-arrange a playing time it would be good to post it so that anyone who wants to observe can do so (if you are playing with observer on). Post results there too. Game or round summaries by the players might make for interesting reading.

Best of seven, ties don't count. Try to play your first round within a week. Hopefully everything runs smoothly.

Hi Rek18{blöcker}

just a couple of questions.

"Best of seven" I don't understand that, please explain.

"ties don't count" Does it mean, if it happens to end as tie, should the game be repeated?

Please could you give a brief description in simple words, how the tournament will work? How many rounds etc.

Re:Online Tournament Thu, 28 April 2005 21:59
Ok.

The format is an elimination tournament. With 8 people we'll have three rounds.

Each round consists of the two players playing until one of them has won four games (i.e. best of seven).

Games should be scheduled by the two players. They can play them however they like but should aim to finish each round within a week. The T2R messaging system is a good way to organize games. If you can, post the time you plan to play on the 1st Tournament thread, people might be interested in following the games.

Once all matches in a round are complete the matchups for the next round will be set up and the next round will begin.

For each round the matchups will be determined using the current rankings of the players; first vs last, 2nd vs 2nd-last, etc.

Hopefully we can avoid complications due to dropping from games and such. If someone does drop, please do not make any moves, leave the game immediately and try to use the Resume feature to continue it when the player who dropped is available.

Post all results, and if you like game summaries, on the "1st Tournament" thread.

I hope that covers it. If there are any other specific questions post them and we'll sort out answers.

GL & HF

Do those who lose the first round continue playing from places 5. - 8. or has the online tournament ended for them?

5-8 round matchups are listed on the "1st Tournament" thread. I think it would be cool if people finished it out. The seven game matches are fun to follow.

*thekid beat playercrams
*El Soyokaze beat Zugbegleiterin (scary that I can spell that without thinking now).
*Optimus beat Br'er Rabbit
*I beat SKMorefield.

In the 2nd round, thekid is up 2-1 over ElSoyokaze and I'm up 2-1 over Optimus.

Re:Online Tournament Mon, 09 May 2005 03:56
We played games 3 and 4 and still tied.

Game 3 thekid 113 El Soyokaze 81

I have LA - Chicago and Toronto-Miami. He has Montreal - Atlanta and Winnipeg -Houston. He blocked me in a couple of spots but I was able to get around and take the game.

Game 4 El Soyokaze 124 thekid 114

He has Duluth -Houston and Seattle-LA. I have Vancouver-Montreal and NY-Atlanta. He takes 5 of the 6 space routes while I only get 2. That makes the difference.

Tough match so far as I expected. As I have said all along, I wouldn't be surprised if it goes 7.

Holy crap, I played an awful first game today. There was NO reason for me to take Atlanta-Miami before Miami-NO. It was obvious I was unprepared to play, so don't expect that again. =)
