Remembering D-Day Wed, 06 June 2012 05:18
Hi friends,

I'm sure that most of you already know this and will be remembering the bravery of the soldiers who fought in Normandy (from both sides), but I thought it was worth posting anyway...68 years ago today, the Western Allies fought their way back onto mainland Europe through the Normandy beaches.

Thank you to any surviving veterans of this momentous day, and thank you to this community for constantly being a positive and diverse group of historians who look at issues from every side! I hope you have time today to remember D-Day in your own way; whether that means playing 8 D-Day scenarios online, getting together with friends for a table-top marathon, or simply taking a moment for quiet reflection.

Take care, everyone, and remember D-Day today. Cool

Same to you. I woke up earlier only to play Omaha OL solo... weird way to celebrate, but still a lot of fun! Very Happy

Jesse....I can only add a ditto to your well-written message. As I grew up, I knew a number of men who had fought their way across Europe back in '44, and each carried his memories in his own unique way. But all were heroes, and may they all rest in peace. This is indeed a day to remember them and cherish the sacrifices they made!

Good thing you remembered me about it: maybe a theme song for this day! David Bowie - Heroes Smile

My uncle "Slim" landed on D-day, 1944. He was a company cook so he was not one of the front line persons landing. I remember he told me that he and his company went all the way to Berlin. Thanks Uncle "Slim"

Everyone have a great day We remember the sacrifice made by "the greatest generation". The world would be a very different place today without them. Hug or shake a vets hand today especially. I am very grateful.
