Equipment Pack - A Necessity? Thu, 26 July 2012 18:58
I'm curious of the opinions of some of the M44 vets.

I'm fairly new to M44, and have purchased a good number of expansions in rapid succession. My mind is reeling trying to remember all of the rules for particular units and terrain tiles. I'm sure they will become second nature as I play more scenarios.

One question is does the equipment pack greatly increase the complexity of the game? It seems like there are new units, with new rules. Or is it that the figures included were previously represented with badges? Or both?

Secondly, is this an expansion that you think will greatly enhance the game, or is it an expansion for M44 enthusiasts who already have two copies of everything and want more toys? Smile

Most of the units are replacing badges that have come from different other expansions. There are a few new units, like the Hobart's funnies, the Nebelwerfer, and Kubelwagen and French Army. Some are miniatures that represent badges, but now are tied to a miniature like the long tom for the big gun badge, the M7 priest for mobile artillery, Italian artillery figures for the Italian badge on standard artillery, cavalry figures for cavalry badge (but why Polish?).

On a side note, I'm surprised that they didn't do a crocodile trailer for the Churchill to represent flame tanks.

Hello,

IMHO, depends on what you mean by necessity. It surely doesn't add too much to the game itself, but I do prefer minis to badges.

I also want to capitalize on the overlord and BT scenarios that are included.

Does it worth the money? Not sure yet. I'll say it once on my hands.

Cheers! Smile

I would say if your looking for expansions for a newer player, the terrain pack, army packs, and the campaign books are more important.

I however, am missing only a couple expansions, and will be getting this one. Laughing

It could get a bit confusing for a newer player as the rules in the game/expansions seem to build on each other.

Either way, enjoy and have fun with it!

One of the great things about Memoir is that it's hundreds of games in one. There are over 300 Official scenarios, and over 2,000 user-contributed ones. While it's nice to play favorite scenarios over and over again (and I've willingly played some more than 50 times), it's also nice to have new variations.

I immediately ordered the Equipment Pack, because I want the new units (with their new, special rules) and the new scenarios that use them. To me, this is an exciting expansion.

But many of these rules have already been addressed in other expansions, as I said. For a list of all expansions and their terrain, rules, and other additions, click below;

To the OP... No it is not a mandatory addition. But if you don't get it a year down the road when it is unavailable you'll be wishing you bought it.

I bought two sets so I can create a few modifications.

It would have been nice to have the special figures (half tracks, tank destroyers, etc.) when playing Winter Wars. But we did OK without them.

After I've played both sides of a scenario, I like to play something new. There's only been a couple times when I wished we could start over (like after losing my Big Gun to Barrage on the first turn) to play the scenario again.

So I guess this would depend heavily on the scenarios in the Equipment Pack. It seems balance wasn't the goal of many official scenarios. I can dig that one side is offense and the other is defense, so one side has to have a plan of attack. I know some scenarios are dependent on a key unit or units (like the big gun). Hopefully, there will be "showcase" scenarios, where there's one "new" unit, and it's important to the scenario. That way you can learn its rules and come up with strategy.

There were a lot of rules and tiles in the Terrain Pack, but unfortunately only a few scenarios, so many went unused. Likewise there were so many new rules and units in Winter Wars, I feel shell-shocked after playing. I hope this isn't like either.

The equipment pack is not a necessity now. But if future scenario releases call for some of the special units that don't already have badges, it might seem like it.

I am going to purchase the equipment pack, even though I am somewhat disappointed with it. What's the point of French infantry, but no French tanks or artillery? Or why Italian arty and no infantry or tanks? Dedicated Italian and French mini releases would have been better IMO and therefore the figures would have been "painted", thus saving us all some time.

Now, I have been hoping for new miniature releases because the minis are one the main draws for me to this game. But this release seems arbitrary and somewhat pointless. Maybe there is some rationale from DOW that I don't quite see yet. Maybe the remaining Italian and French units will be coming in another release.

I'll still be buying it though because
1) as PanzerRunes said above, it may be out of print soon enough
2) future releases/scenarios may call for the new figures, rules, cards
3) it has a few new figures that aren't pointless and new scenarios
4) I'm a completist when it comes to Memoir '44
5) DOW deserves the support for keeping such a great game going string
