1st Armoured to the rescue - winning in the first turn - as Allies! Sun, 12 August 2012 10:20
1st Armoured to the rescue is not so popular and it is heavily in odds of the Germans.

Theoretically the Germans have a good chance of completing it in one turn - if they are lucky enough to get Armored Overrun in the first turn.

4 tanks = 16 dice, and if they completely eliminate their opponent or roll a flag then that makes potentially 16 more, 32 dice that could mean the end of the game, in the starting turn.

Well trying to put this theory to the test I offered to play always two games and I got my 1 turn victory, but not as Germans but the British!

http://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/en/battle/?id=31 513804

And it did help that my graceful but unlucky opponent "Unlucky" Lucky Duck pressed the done button a little too soon.

Thing was I was hoping to achieve the same result with the Germans - winning a battle before the opponent gets to do anything.

This was a surprise even to me.

Of course Lucky Duck did contribute in a big way when he couldn't move by error.

(Lucky Duck has designed a good mission 1st El Alamein for those interested under SFTF)

And on top of that you wittmanned the battle (some achievement even though you've already got both medals)

Re:1st Armoured to the rescue - winning in the first turn - as Allies! Mon, 13 August 2012 01:40
I can't resist adding my two cents (or two ingots) worth. After all -I was the hapless opponent who lost!

First off, let me say that this was an extraordinary acheivement - even if my own ineptitude may have contributed to Jokull's stunning 1 turn vicotry as the Allies. Word to the wise - be careful chatting while playing - especially if it is your turn.

Second, Jokull is a skillful player, and he'd already worked out the odds - down to the specific cards and rolls - that he'd need to win in one turn as the Germans. He was testing a theory that winning in one turn would unlock one of the heretofore unearned acheivements. Was his theory correct? I won't spoil the surprise.

But that leads me to my third observation: it is a tribute to Jokull's skill as a player that he was able to "wing" it (pun intended) when the opportunity presented itself while he was playing from the Allied side. No time to calculate the odds and execute an elaborate plan. He simply charged with four tanks and an armor overrun and then bam! He nailed it.

I therefore proudly present Brigadier General Jokull with the following Special Acheivement:

To von Kleist (and others) I respectfully submit that Jokull might just say this is the best 2 gold ingots he's ever spent!

2 Ingots well spent,

Not to mention that it sparked this thread.

My only complaint is that Lucky Duck is such I nice opponent I feel a tad bad.

But with the worthy additions here I am sure we both got our 2 cents (Ingots) worth.

Yep Phread, very true.

We ducks are flighty creatures by nature.

Once you find me, nabbing me isn't (usually) too hard.

I declare 'duck season' open!

Quack!

Been there done that - and even more painful was my 4 panzers were ordered by an Armor Assault. Lesson learned there - make damn well sure you are finished moving BEFORE you touch any buttons.

Of course this would never happen in a ftf game (nor one played on Vassal).

An on screen prompt should be added as a feature to address this problem. After all they have one if a player does not order all the units he can off a card.

Every now and then I forget to move units too. Crying or Very Sad
I've also made the suggestion for such a prompt in an earlier thread. It would help a lot.

Jiminy crickets, every time I look at your signature it gets better and better.

Any chance you can put a small duck on the back of the tank that is chasing the infantry, in honor of our newest Colonel? Smile

Thanks for the appreciation. Smile
But a silly duck on a glorious panzer? I think my boss (the one with the moustache) wouldn't agree. Very Happy
