Alternate use for patrol cars and halftracks Sun, 12 August 2012 14:00
I joined this great game after many expansions already existed. The overlord battle maps were already out.

When I saw the figures for the battle map disaster at dieppe, I did not know anything about the figures that came with the other battle maps. So I immediately noticed the same grey as the anti tank guns that came with the mediterranean theatre, and was persuaded that like those, the patrol cars and halftracks were to be added to another unit as some sort of SWA.
Then I read that patrol cars allowed movement to up to 4 hexes, and so I started imagining how they would work.

I just decided that I would share what I came up with, so that others might use it as a variant, if that is their thing.

Patrol cars (variant)
- As SWA, it is added to an standard infantry unit. It stays with the unit it was at the start of the game with, and is removed with the last figure of that unit, but it does not generate and extra medal.
- An infantry with a patrol car may move up to 4 hexes and may still battle.

Halftrack (variant)
- As SWA, it is added to a standard infantry unit. It stays with the unit it was at the start of the game with, and is removed with the last figure of that unit, but it does not generate and extra medal.
- An infantry unit with a halftrack may move 2 and battle or may move 3 and not battle.
- An infantry unit with a halftrack may ignore the first flag rolled against it.
- When an infantry unit with a halftrack is in terrain that does not give terrain protection, infantry and armor attacking the unit with a halftrack do so with -1 die.
(in short: halftrack is +1 movement and integrated sandbag)

I like the halftrack variant provided the sandbag ability applies only to infantry. As I posted long ago, the half track implementation as a replacement unit makes little sense, as halftracks provide mobility to infantry.

As for the jeep rules I don,t particularly favor your rules but do think the jeep should be added to an infantry unit. Matbe it should provide some leadership ability or the ability to move 2 fire and then move an additional hex or two to cover.

But as always we can all play house rules the way we like, but most players are going to follow published rules.

My own idea about the jeep is that it is too hard to kill. It is only something like 17% easier to kill than a Tiger. So my house rule is that on the re-roll, a grenade or infantry symbol kills the unit.
