No naval warfare? Sat, 18 August 2012 21:33
I just figured out that this awesome game has a flaw. the lack of Naval warfare. And I just don't understand WHY.

Many of the crucial battles in WW2 were fought at sea, especially on the pasific front, so it can't be left out of this amazing game.
a naval war expansion would EASILY fit the game and work well, and it would add a whole new dimension to the game, even bigger one than the Air pack does.
Just think about it! Battleships, cruisers, submarines and aircraft carriers battling each other on a sea board(although this board should be BT sized, the regular board size is too narrow for this) with new sea rules and such! And also, using special badges and rules, you could add uniqueness to the different ships, like the Gigantic Yamato or the old battle cruiser HMS Hood!

And those who think that an open sea battles would get boring, who said we could'nt add islands or a coastline, where regular land forces would fight at the same time?

I can already picture many possible scenarios which I would just love to play:
The hunt for Bismarck and the destruction of HMS Hood,
The battle of Midway, the invasion of Guadalcanal, the battle of Coral sea, Island hopping, the german Wolfpack, Battle of the River Plate and the sinking of Graf Spee, Tha battle of Taranto, The british betrayal against the french navy and many, many others!

Why haven't they thought of adding naval war, or if they have thought about it and have turned down the idea?

I just hope that they someday will add it. I would pay an arm and a leg to get a naval expansion.

Sadly that expansion is out of print so if you can find it, it might be more expensive than you realized. Confused It's a great addition to the system, though! Cool

Naval combat doesn't lend itself very well to the C&C system... Much like air power.

Naval power would probably be better implemented abstractly through cards or off board assets.

Why not? Seems to me both naval and air power could lend itself well to a C&C type system with a little thought and imagination. Its not like Memoir '44 is a detailed simulation, and naval warfare could be easily abstracted. Air power could have been better designed (maybe), and just because it wasn't, doesn't mean it couldn't have been done right.

For naval warfare, I think it all comes down to whether its worth the investment (time and money) and whether a hybrid with land warfare is possible without major changes to the current game.

I've always said that there should be more naval support for amphibious landings (as there was for Pacific Island hopping). Dow did make an extra row of ocean in the breakthrough maps, but I'd like an island map with the island off-center with maybe one row of ocean (not shore) on each side and three rows of ocean on both ends. Then if we could have amtracks (these can be cardboard like the ones Nothung made, available here http://cdn.daysofwonder.com/uploads/userpages/469890/_3265.p df

Amtracks or Landing Vehicle Tracked (LVT) are tracked vehicles that can then move up onto the beaches, and some of them (LVT-A1) are armed themselves with a turret from a M-3 Stuart containing a 37mm gun.
