Jesse, I have been spending the latter year working on a combined all-in-one reference manual to Memoir 44 - pulling and revising text from every manual, adding in the clarifications from the FAQs, and other online sources. Yah... it's a labor of love, and I've styled it visually with 1940-'s era document design and fonts. It's probably 60% finished. I would be happy to send you several chapters to give you an idea of it... my goal was to have a single resource where I could lookup a term alphabetically, and get the whole story (with references to other related items) in one place. So that I would have a single volume on the table beside the game. This may be 180 degrees away from your intentions for the FAQ... or it may sound like something that could be worthwhile and useful. Let me know. I would be happy to have more people help, and serve as more of an editor for consistent style and design. Quote:

No = 11%

It was nice to see that such a high percentage of people use the FAQ! Thanks to that 11% of people who don't use the FAQ but still took the time to answer the survey. Smile

2. How often do you use the Memoir '44 FAQ?

Every time I have a question = 48%
Only when I can't find the answer somewhere else = 30%
I rarely use the FAQ = 14%
I do not use the FAQ = 8%

Interesting to see that 78% of people use the FAQ to find answers to their questions. I wonder what the other 22% of people do when they have a question. Confused Laughing

Friends = 1%
The Memoir '44 Forums (BGG) = 22%
The FAQ = 64%
The Memoir '44 Forums (Days of Wonder) = 8%
I don't have questions! = 5%

I wasn't too surprised to see that so many people use the FAQ or that the second highest source of clarification is the BGG forum. I don't know that this is a surprise to anyone... Razz

**Original FAQ Document (52 pages)**
Full Color = 38.1%

**FAQ Supplement (11 pages)**

I don't use the FAQ! = 7.5%

Up until now, I had underestimated how many people don't print the FAQ and simply access it through digital means. It's truly becoming a digital age!! This lead me to wonder if I should add to the visual side of the document.

I've thought about making the FAQ look more like other Memoir '44 publications, but the amount of ink it would take to print, has always stopped me. Maybe if so many people are downloading the FAQ and using it on their computers or tablet devices, it would make sense to offer a more impressive version.

Again, a lot of people seem to use the digital version although it looks like about 55% of people still print it out and keep the FAQ with their Memoir stuff.

All of this was interesting information that will help guide my upcoming FAQ update. I still haven't figured out exactly what I'll do with the next update, but I'm happy for the input. Cool

It's nice to know that the FAQ is on par or better than FAQ's that other people have seen for other games. For anyone who has seen a board game FAQ they liked better (or that had features they really liked) let me know so I can look into adding things that will make the Memoir '44 FAQ even better! Smile

The was the question and answer that surprised me the most! I expected that there would be an overwhelming interest in seeing the FAQ in Facing Pages layout. It turns out that people don't care much about seeing the FAQ in a book format...which is fine with me. So it'll stay in the same layout as it has been.

Keep up the good work! 8/10/2012 1:40 AM

Thank you to everyone who took the extra time to write something for this question! I noticed some themes emerging from these answers.

1) More frequent updates! Laughing
Unfortunately it will still be a while before the next update is finished, but the reason it's going to take so long is because I'm learning to use InDesign and creating the whole FAQ (along with the Supplement) in that program. My goal is that future updates will be much easier (with a better program) and so updates will be less difficult to insert.

2) Link content within the document.
This is something I've wanted to do anyway, so it was good to see that others wanted it as well. I plan to link the table of contents with their corresponding entry but I'm not sure I'll go so far as to link questions within the FAQ. We'll see what I have time and energy for...Smile

3) Made for a mobile device (iPhone, etc)
Sadly I have no knowledge about how to do something like this so it won't happen from me. If anyone knows how, and wants to take this on, I would be happy to give them what help I can. Otherwise people will simply have to print a copy out or have a computer handy.

Thanks again for everyone's input!! It was very much appreciated. Cool

I see several respondents mention a line-of-sight chart. Under Official Scenarios the top entry is always Hills (Examples of line of sight)

That's pretty good and I think worth including in the FAQ. Since units can only shoot 3 away, that about covers it.

There's now at least two units that need line of sight to shoot 4 away (Tank Destroyers and H.A-T 88's) plus the sniper can shoot 5 away. I might post an L.O.S. board in SFTF for tricky situations. I'll let you know to review it.

I noticed a few requests for pictures as well and the LOS example was one of them. Because the FAQ is already so big, and because I provide a link to the online example, I've always figured it doesn't need to be in the document itself. We'll see how things look in the next update.

The other reason I never put an image of the board in the FAQ is because it has been updated a few times over the years to cover situations that came up...

I would be happy to take a look at another LOS example for longer ranged units that still need to see their targets. If you have time, try to explain the situation in the debriefing notes like the Official one does. It helps make things clear. Smile Thanks for taking that on. Cool

Here's what I got so far. I started with an LOS map I made for another hex-game, and tested it in pieces in Memoir'44 Online.

http://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44/en/memoire_board/?id=11975

AT RANGE 5:
Forests block line of sight between Sniper 1 and surrounding Russians.

Shooter 1 has Line of Light to French Resistance Targets 1-8.

AT RANGE 4:
Shooter 1 (incl. Tank Destroyers, 88s, etc.) has Line of Sight to forest hexes and those marked with Minefields, but not empty hexes with the Hedgehogs!

Shooter 1 would have Line of Sight to any unit on these forests.

EDIT: I was able to fit another situation onto the map, by moving a forest, so don't need a second shooter.

Yep, the LOS example looks good and I can't see any mistakes. Is an example needed for these situations, though, because the "center of hex to center of hex" rule is pretty easy to follow for all of them.

Where the Official LOS examples are useful is when it comes to looking over hills and such...situations where the rules are a bit less clear. Maybe your example could include more of those examples and less 'obstructed LOS' examples. Smile

"I've thought about making the FAQ look more like other Memoir '44 publications, but the amount of ink it would take to print, has always stopped me. Maybe if so many people are downloading the FAQ and using it on their computers or tablet devices, it would make sense to offer a more impressive version."

Some of competitors provide two versions of FAQ: a fancy publication and printer-friendly black-on-white version;

I do not know if this is technically difficult, but it paves way for nice impressive publication for geeks and pure inofrmative version for FAQ printers.

That's true for hexes where range=3. I came up with this for playing Battle Cry where the cannon's range is 6 and needs line of sight. I have lots of pencil lines on it, where I was drawing from "Center... to Center". I had 2 or 3 question marks on it for range 5-6 (there's nothing that needs los for range 6 in Memoir), and testing it in Memoir'44 Online helped to clear up (EDIT:) Target 5 and Target 6.

If I'd done this last week before playing [Normandy] Capture of Falaise, it would have been helpful.

Antoine did the hill one, so that's good to go. I played Vercors Campaign lately, and found that hills still block line of sight for mountains, so he could add Mountains and hills to his. Again, mine is for range 4-5.

If someone can figure out another configuration of forests to cover all situations including Shooter 2's, so it all fits in the pattern that would be cool. (EDIT:) Got it, it fits!!!

I like this idea, but why would they spend time making two versions when people could just print it in black and white? I could see it making more of a difference if one version is more "simple" and the other is "fancy", and I might be able to do something like that without too much extra effort.

Thanks for the great suggestion. Smile

you said nothing needs LOS over a distance of 6 in memoir. When smokescreens could block LOS, you should check LOS for artillery and even big guns. That means LOS for up to distance 8!

I'm not familiar with Smoke Screen (or Equipment Pack), but artillery normally doesn't need line-of-sight.

True! But Smoke Screens only block LOS if a unit is behind the smoke, so I don't know how difficult that is to figure out.

I haven't had a chance to play with the new Smoke Screen rules, but I like the idea and can't wait to try it out!! Very Happy

JFKoski, smoke screens block LOS for everyone, even artillery.

Rasmussen, i agree it is not hard, but it is just as easy to check if the unit is behind a forest. If JFKoski found it useful to make a map for that with the sniper, saying that the sniper requires the highest distance, he could do it with a big gun and smoke screens in several hexes.

Greetings JF,

Nice LOS chart.

One thing I spotted was no reference to LOS blocked on both sides of a hex. Check out bottom of page 9 of the standard rule book, with terrain blocking line of sight, even though they are not ajacent.

Well done.

I read that yesterday.

The only spaces at range=4 that are in Shooter's Line of Sight are forests and hexes marked with minefields.

The examples there (curiously range=4), are covered in my chart, except for where two forests/units together block los behind them, which I think is self-evident at this point.

I don't see anything about that on the reference card (see above), and since I don't have a campaign book, I guess I won't be playing with Smoke Screen on the Audie Murphy scenarios.

Also, I can't test range=6 situations with the Online game for line of sight.

(EDIT:)
OK, I found something in the rules for Equipment Pack:
Quote:

Line of Sight: A hex containing a Smoke Shell blocks Line of Sight,
though units that are in the hex containing this Smoke Shell may be
seen and see out of that hex. In other words, a unit is hidden from line
of sight only if the line of sight crosses the hex containing a Smoke
Shell. Smoke Shell hexes also block line of sight for Artillery units.

Artillery can shoot over a mountain, but not over some smoke? Stupid.

There are a few scenarios where the mountains block LoS for artillery. A good example of this it is "Saverne Gap", if I recall correctly.

of course artillery can shoot through smoke, but the forward observer radio-ing in the coordinates for the shots cannot see the enemy units through the smoke.
artillery is just not allowed to shoot blind.
