What would you like for the 10th Anniversary of Memoir44? Wed, 03 October 2012 07:47
Hello,

I know is two years ahead... But since the production of such a big project seems to be a long and complicated process,

- what would you like for the 10th Anniversary of the game?

I'd like to have 2 sort of products:

- New battlemaps, to commemorate the 10 years of the game, and
- A special edition of the core game having British Troops (European Front) with its specific armor/artillery units and German Late War Infantry, for example, (or any other type of German Infantry units, different from those included in the vanilla 2004 game) with its specific armor/artillery units as well, providing a new full set of scenarios.

That would encourage senior players getting an additional base game.

What do you guys think?

All existing units, terrain, actions, combat cards, ... being supported by the online game and the editor.
Breakthrough and Overlord for the online game.
A way to filter out sftf scenarios in the online game based on your personal rating. E.G. All scenarios I personally rated 1 star, all those I rated 2 stars, ...

I like the idea of an updated base game. I only have 1 base game, and could use an updated game with new components/scenarios to combine with my original game. As long as the board and tiles would still be compatible.

I would say the same than Quit2. I have never had the opportunity to play Breakthrough and Overlord on boardgames, and I'm sure it would be great for all players playing mainly Online to get these possibilities => that will offer also, from my point of view, more longevity to the game.

And, of course, more official scenarios on the Online (when I say more, I mean more interesting scenarios, not others UTAH BEACH please Rolling Eyes )

I'd settle just for new dice Laughing

But also the obvious ommissions of:

* Late war British Inf, Art and Armour
* Early war French Art and Armour

More Overlord scenarios, an Overlord Campaign book, Italian army pack (not white but in their own color), and etched dice.

I agree with that. An Italian oriented expansion would be nice.

Also:
- a campaign system that is more than just a handful of normal scenarios strung together.
- a naval-oriented pacific expansion with various coastline tiles, gunships etc.
- more modular boards (without the victory medal track etc.) so I can build any size map I want
- more breakthrough scenarios

Hello,

well it looks like a 10th anniversary base game with:

- Allies: British Units (Western Front)
- Axis: Italian Units

backwards compatible and with new scenarios sounds cool! Very Happy

Re:What would you like for the 10th Anniversary of Memoir44? Thu, 04 October 2012 18:25
I'd like to see a mild alteration of the game where the special abilities are detached from their respective nations and assigned to specific units (regardless of nation) on a scenario (or campaign) basis.

Couldn't the Russians at Stalingrad be said to have "French Resistance" or "Imperial Japanese Army" characteristics? Likewise, why not play with a commissar chip for a late war Japanese scenario with units whose communication has been cut off from their HQ? Shouldn't German SS units (especially early war) have a similar ability to the USMC?

I don't see anything intrinsically "national" about most of the nations cards.

What about Flamethrower SWA? Same rules as Flamethrower tanks but a once-only use, then treat as normal Infantry.

Thanks to my son for the idea.

It's going to be a very long wait for everyone...and unless DoW changes the way they do things (which I wouldn't expect them to do) we won't hear anything official about their plans until just a little while before the anniversary. Smile

Well, what I said. Something more substantial that actually requires campaign level choices, such as allocation of troops, (e.g., setting up defensive positions or building up forces for attack), resources and reserves. Right now campaign is really just the same game played multiple times tallying the score. Not very interesting IMO.

I (and others) have mentioned this before. Imagine a higher level map of a region of North Afrika in which Operation Compass is to take place. On this strategic level map, the allocation of available troops, supplies etc are made. Then based on high level decisions on this map, the fighting ensues on the Memoir '44 board, but not with canned setups. The scenario setup would be driven by decisions on the high level board etc.

Its not for me to work out how such a system would work, because I'm not getting paid for it. Although it sounds complicated, I think it is doable (whether its profitable is another matter). This is what I always hoped for when I heard about new campaign system.

A hardbacked book with every scenario (updated to latest version if a scenario has more than one version) in it. This book would also tie together older scenarios into campaigns.

Sounds like fun! So kind of a combination of Risk and Memoir '44?

It sounds like Antoine from DoW had a similar idea because in his own time he's set up a system a little bit like that using Memoir '44 Online. Maybe someday we'll see something like that for the tabletop version like you're talking about. Who knows? Smile

I think he is refering more to something like this:

http://www.roughdraft.me/?cat=7

"The Memoir Experiments" outlines a different way to play campaigns.

Take a peek at it if you have the time. I think it is a neat idea of playing a campaign without adulterating the gameplay.

I saw that blog a little while ago (before all of these details were figured out) and it looked like a neat idea. It sounds like it's morphing into a unique game all of its own instead of just Memoir '44.

There's nothing wrong with that...but when you start combining units in a hex, using some cards but not others, changing victory conditions, and new rules like break points it starts to become a different game.

Memoir '44 has changed over the years with the addition of the Air Rules, Breakthrough format, and Campaigns, but the basic rules never change and the resulting game is enhanced rather than changed. I expect that we'll see similar additions or improvements to Memoir '44 but not a full re-working of the game. Cool

My gamegroup and I have started a similar project, but the process is quite different. Our main goal is that we don't want to change any official existing rule regarding the gameplay.

So, keeping this goal in mind we have tested the following:

- We are creating Unit cards, representing forces for both sides. Since Memoir'44 tries to be historically accurate, we do try as well when talking about Units composition.

- We set up the battlefield exactly as depicted in the official scenario, but we don't deploy any units on the board yet. We maintain every landmark and obstacle set in the scenario.

- We check the Briefing and Conditions of Victory, pondering where to locate our Memoir units.

- The starting side has the initiative. Each Field General has allocated the units stated in the "Unit Card" and it's time to deploy all your forces in the board, on a turn basis. 1 unit each side.

- Defenders will try to set the units in the best defensive positions, while the attacking side may try to concentrate the units in one side or the other depending on the objectives, even though he doesn't know how his card hand might be.

- Once all the units are deployed in the battlefield, we do the Events Roll and the Reserve Roll.

- After that, everything sticks to official rulings. No single rule regarding the gameplay is neither modified nor changed.

We plan to test it with the "Fall of Poland" seriously. We do know that adapting some scenarios to this method is gonna be a mammoth tasking, however most of them may fit easily since we do know what units took part in most of the official Scenarios.

Regards.

Interesting variation to the Memoir '44 Campaign system. It sounds like you guys have thought through the plan and you might find it interesting to look over on BGG for a guy who did a similar system as a solo variation for Memoir.

I don't remember who it was, but he basically selected units at random and set them on a board that was already payed out.

It sounds a little bit like you'll lose some of the historical aspect of the game because the setup will all depend on objectives instead of where units were in the actual events, but if you're having fun, that's what matters for the game!

Let us know how the testing goes! Whenever you have some, post pictures on your User Page so we can see how it all works. Smile
