Hello,

Would anyone of the participants mind making a sum up of the Season development? It would be cool for non-french speakers who are interested in this project.

Thanks

Re:Meta-game / 2nd test Sat, 10 November 2012 14:11
yesterday, i was at the m44 belgium club's monthly meeting. some of the french speaking members are in the metagame, and they discussed it.
Aparently, the brits took a risk defensive wise, and england got invaded by the axis. Aparently, the have not much left, except maybe one airplane, and maybe some territories in afrika. And this is only the start of the game.
Germany has turned all his troops around to attack russia. Russia is suffering while the US is still trying to get the troops over the atlantic ocean. At the same time, italy is holding his own inthe mediterranean theatre, without needing help from the germans.

That's what I got from it, but I am not sure. I'm not really following it up closely.

Book tip: SS-GB by Len Deighton
SS-GB is an alternate history novel by Len Deighton, set in a United Kingdom fictionally conquered and occupied by Germany during World War II. The novel's title refers to the branch of the Nazi SS that controls Britain.

another book of what if during the war: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Plot_Against_America

I never read it completely, because i didn't like the writing style of the author. But my wife read it, and liked it.
The book talks about how the election of another candidate for presidency would have had the US likely side with Germany during the war, with amongst others Jew persecution in the US.

Deighton is a good author. I have almost all his books.
He wrote several other WWII themed books.

I too can recommend the the kook 'SS-GB' by Deighton for those who are interested in that 'alternate' timeline theme .. it's a great read.

Out of interest ... is it possible to have an update on how the French gang are getting on with testing the Meta-game?

I noticed that one or two here have previously stated they could be prepared to run with organising something similar for us English speakers, after the initial testing has run it's course ... (makes sense to be able to learn from their experience).

Any further news on how far through the campaign they all are?

Cheers ..

I know that UK has been wiped off the map (or is close to be !), with germans on UK island, and italian all over northern Africa.

USSR is fighting heavily.

US troops are close to land, but I don't know where (and would not tell you where if I knew it).

I have to check.

Checking...

4th round playing, first results.

English (having fled from Egypt & Persia) are fighting along russian troops to save Moscow from german troops ! Shocked

They're also still trying to resist in Caucasia.

Russia has being badly invaded, and fights fiercely to defend Moscow.

US have landed in Morocco.

hahaaa! Very Happy I'd love to, but facing a house move before Christmas pretty much puts paid to that I think. Even once the New Year arrives I would doubt I could give it the time required, due to work commitments ...

There were a few other volunteers though, earlier on in the thread, so we'll wait and see ...

Nice try tho' Wink Smile

Re:Meta-game / 2nd test Thu, 22 November 2012 11:06
So,

someone did make a good summary for me of what happened since the beginning of the meta-game.

What was built by each country (ships, troops, anti-aircraft units, reco air units...) has been left aside. I guess it's still classified.

I won't translate as of now the rules, but here, on the following thread, is the map at the very start of the game :
Map and rules

So, let's see what has happened...

TURN 1 :
- Germany lands in UK and meets a large successe, defeating all troops and gaining that territory.
[player admits that UK is the most complicated nation, since Germany can quickly land and take over the main territory]
- Caucasia attacked by italians ; mitigated success, but Caucasia is taken by Italy, and USSR is stopped in what could have been a reinforcement of its defenses ;
- Ialty attacks Egypt & Transjordany ; since there are no troops there, Italy takes over the 2 territories ;
- UK attacks Lybia and conquers it ;
- US is on its way toward "fortress" Europa ;
- reading what's after, I believe the general that gave me the overview of the game forgot to mention that Smolensk had been taken by Russia, my guess is on 1st turn ;
[player admits that this very 1st turn, with UK defeated, and 2 other UK territories taken (when UK only took Lybia) deeply affected what would follow]

TURN 2 :
Germany makes opportunistic attacks :
- taking Irlande (no troop) ;
- taking Iceland (no troop) ;
- taking Karelia in USSR (no troop) ;

Italy makes opportunistic attacks, leaving Caucasia with no troop to conquer North Africa and middle east, to wipe off english of the map.
- Italy takes Morocco (no troop) ;
- Italy takes Algeria (no troop) ;
- Italy takes Persia (no troop) ;
- Italy attacks Lybia and defeats UK ;
- UK attacks Egypt and is defeated by Italy ;

Russian front (name taken from Avalon Hill...) :
- Germany loses Bielorussia (no troop) ;
- Germany loses Finland (no troop) ;

US still aboard their ships, helped by one of the only UK troop surviving, a reco air unit.
[player admits that having ONLY the Russian front to take care of makes things easier ; US can not land before turn 3].

TURN 3 :
Germany decides to stop russian troops :
- Germany takes Finland back (no troop ?) ;
- Germany takes Bielorussia back (no troop ?) ;
- Germany takes Archangelsk (no troop ?) ;
- Germany takes Smolensk back after a victory over Russia ;
- Italy takes Kazakhstan after a victory over Russia ;
- Italy tries to take Caucasia but is defeated by Russia.
- Russia attacks Norway but is defeated : Norway stays for Germany ;
- Russia attacks Ukraine, but Ukraine stands and Russia is defeated. Ukraine stays for Germany.
- US have not landed yet. Still a UK reco unit somewhere in european skies ;

TURN 4 :
-> first "big" axis defeats ; a "turn" in the war ?
- successful US landing in Morocco, landing in France or UK would have probably been more difficult, those territories being "probably" more heavily defended ;
- Germany attacks Moscow (name is "Russia" territory on map) but is defeated ;
- Italy attacks Caucasia but is defeated.

TURN 5 :
... is about to begin !
Antoine wishes to have the meta-game finished by december the 23rd.

You're welcome.

New rules about ships & aircraft seems to be :

- each time ships meet enemy ships in a naval zone : 1 loss each side 'til one side has no ship left ;

- same for planes ;

- you can move troops (called batallions) along a "bridge" of ships as long as there is continuity and a place to land.
My guess is that Germany built 2-3 ships, sent them (1st turn - 1 move from Germany) in the Northern sea, and sent troops on that "bridge" to conquer UK.

As for recruiting new troops, planes, ships...

The phases of the game are :

- you use your credits to launch recruitements or build special units (planes, ships) -> they will only be available at the beginning of next turn, so you have to plan ahead ;

- then you declare your moves ;

- then fights occur (I have not read about fights, how losses are taken into account) ; victory or defeat tells you if you have won a territory ; I think you can not defeat more enemy troops than what was brought in the territory (during season 0, that was a problem, with 1 batallion winning over 3 batallions, and destroying them all - here, my guess is that this occurs, you destroy one batallion, but since there are 2 lft, you have to retreat to the territory you just left) ;

I may miss a few things. I am sure I do.

The end of Meta-game was written from turn 1 after the decisive action of the Axis side who had captured London and then privated the Allied of 1/3 of their credits.

Furthermore, Axis team won more matchs than allied, so logicaly, the game was finished by Axis victory at turn 6 with the capture of Moscow. No more interest from this moment for anybody as no more battles to play ...

Now, we are discussing of possible evolution of the rules to obtain a more enjoyable next version. Discussion is on process. I think it could be interesting to wait the result before launch an English version of this great game !

Hi Antoine,

Thanks for sharing some of the details of the game with us. I certainly appreciate you using your own time to run a game for members of the M'44 community, and I look forward to learning more about it after it has been validated through playtesting.

I'm sure that we will be able to find someone to run an English version when you feel that your project is ready for wider use.

Good luck with the game (as well as with your official DoW responsibilities.

Geoff

I 2nd that

I was thinking the other day about this thread, and was wondering how things went with the test run.

If Antoine is around, (or anyone else who took part), is there any way we could have an update and maybe a further discussion about resurrecting this for english-speakers .. ?

(the gracious Van Voort and a few others had expressed interest initially) ..

Just curious really, as it sounded like a fun way to play online.

Cheers

Hi Jim,

Indeed, there was an other frenchedition on 2013 very fun. In meantime, no time for an other edition as it seems Antoine was not free for.

The next French edition should start in coming months (but I'm again not sure at all).

About an english edition, if I remember well, no technical problem to organize it as Antoine was ready to share it (I think so but not sure Rolling Eyes Embarassed ), but a Master of Game (or severals as it takes lot of time ?) would be necessary as I'm almost sure than Antoine won't handle it.

Sorry to not be more accurate but some others people are more informed than me and could perhaps enlight you ! Smile

I'm still not sure why there has to be a separate english version of this.
Why not have everyone play together?

I know there are many discussion to be held within a nation to come up with a decent strategy, and there needs to be communication between the leaders of all nation and with Antoine.

But why not something like this:
- Have 1 nation contain only people who all speak the same language, the lingua franca of that nation.
- Have 1 leader/representative in each nation who speaks french to do the communication with Antoine and the other nations' leaders.

For example:
- US : English speaking + 1 bilingual (EN+FR) leader/representative
- UK : French speaking
- USSR : French speaking
- Italy : English speaking + 1 bilingual (EN+FR) leader/representative
- Germany : French speaking

This way you can accommodate for both language groups.

Hi,

If one of you volunteers for organizing and managing an English version of the game, I will gladly provide him with the rules that I use. Unfortunately there is no way I can run an English metagame myself, as it takes a considerable amount of time. The French version alone will keep me busy for the next two months (and I don't manage the game all by myself: another French player, Merlinade, is in charge of the battles).

Also if you speak French you can join the French Metagame, but as I explained before I cannot mix French-speking players and non-French speaking players, even in separate teams, because the heart of the game is communication.

For any question, please ask.

One of the problems is the time constraint:
you only have a few days to play the games of a round. Based on my experience with the other tournaments the time differences would probably not allow for a speedy gameplay, which is neccesary for the Meta Game

The British Army is still looking for some new chaps (Italian team as well...) ! If you can manage a bit of French, and you have a relatively good availability (1 to 4 matches per week), enroll yourself at the service of the Crown !

Would love to try it. But my experience is that with the time zone difference, it is hard to play many games across the ocean in a week. I can manage 1 or 2 at most, usually on the week-end and even then it tends to have an impact on family activities.

For that reason, I am eagerly awaiting a North-american version of the game.

I could even volunteer to participate in the management of it.

Cheers everyone.
