so does it have special additional rules, or is it just a replacement set for usual trains and stations?

It looks like it's just a replacement set of trains with a fun holiday theme! It will also help players who are color blind... Cool

As rasmussen says...
No special rules, it's just to add diversity on the board Wink

By the way, it's now available for preorder on the webstore...

Does anybody know whether these are available to buy at Essen?

I wasn't able to make it this year and my shopper's reporting that "there seem to be no pumpkin train sets available without buying full copies of TTR and being given them free."

No, unfortunately they weren't available at Essen. They didn't get them in time, we were told and that they wouldn't be available during the entire Essen.

They can now be pre-ordered on this site with a shipping date in November. Seems like a missed opportunity to me, to have these arrive AFTER halloween... Cool

It's pretty lame that this only comes with 45 trains when you need 54 to play partnerships.

Partnerships is a thing that comes with Asia that allows you to play with six players. You and your partner take 27 trains of the same color (hence 54) and have to try to work together without knowing entiirely what the other player has. You do have a shared area so you both know some of the same information (there a little wooden card holders that you put between you) and you can take actions to put out stuff in that area, but you can't communicate directly about stuff in your hand that they can't see.
It's pretty fun Very Happy

Sounds like fun! So the normal sets of trains come with extras? I didn't remember that. Smile

Asia comes with 9 extra trains for each color. My comment about the lameness though is that I think if they are going to sell an independent set it would be nice if it was compatible with all the games.

Three passengers for TtR:Marklin would have also been nice, though I suppose you could just use the stations as passengers instead (since Marklin doesn't use stations).

I suppose if you were really crafty, you could buy two Halloween Freighter sets (giving you 90 trains and six stations), and then pull pumpkins off of three of the extra trains and glue them onto the tops of the three extra stations to create some creepy pumpkinhead passengers. Then you'd have a set you could use with any of the games.

I purchased 2 sets just so we could use it with Asia. My little grie is it didn't come with a little round scoring track marker. We use an extra station instead, but still...

Seriosly? You are out of these? No message on the store saying out of stock so it took me a while to realize it.

Was going to make a birthday present of them for my big-time TTR fanclub friend.
Really disappointed that it is 10 days before Halloween and they are not available.

It says right on the first post that these are limited edition. I'm afraid you missed this by about a year. Sorry.

Just wanted to share a observation:
Ticket to Ride in general is rather colorblind people friendly. The only issue is that its hard to distinguish the trains.

This (The Halloween) expansion is a big helper. If you give the pumkin trains to your colorblind mate he can clearly distinguish them from the other trains.

Its not perfect, but i suppose this way the game becomes more enjoyable.

That's a very interesting observation that I never considered. A very nice touch.

My local game store had these on the shelf for over a year. At first I thought they were silly and pointless, but then I thought, "Sixth color!" I finally bought them last week and sculpted a pumpkin-shaped track marker to use with them; then a friend played them in a TTR: Europe game.

His first pumpkin track was the tunnel from Stockholm to Petrograd--an auspicious start. He won that game with the pumpkins handily, and found them a lot of fun. I think it worked out.
