newbie question: splitting forces

I just got the game for Christmas and have read the rules a couple of times. I'm not sure though when you can split forces. Can you for instance bring half your forces in on the first turn and the other half on the other side? Can you split forces and attack in two different directions or can you only split forces when you conquer a new area and leave forces behind? Sorry for the basic question.
Slightly confused.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "split forces", but here are the answers to your questions
1. Can you for instance bring half your forces in on the first turn and the other half on the other side?
No, once you have conquered a region on the board, you can only attack regions adjacent to the region(s) you already hold (unless you have a power that says otherwise, like Flying).
2. Can you split forces and attack in two different directions or can you only split forces when you conquer a new area and leave forces behind?
You can attack any region adjacent to a region you already hold. So if there are three regions in a row A B and C and you have B, then you can attack both A and C in either order (so yes you can attack in different directions).
You also don't need to maintain a continuous line of regions in order to reallocate troops at the end of the turn. Once you're done attack you can reorganize your remaining troops for defense however you want, regardless of whether the regions you want to move them between are connected or not.
