BUGS w/ Official Scenarios Mon, 06 August 2012 20:20
There's several threads dealing with problems in SFTF (Expert) mode scenarios. I've tested rules and posted expert problems on our wikispaces pages. My understanding of the official response is that Expert mode is a bonus feature and WYSIWYG.

OK, moving on.

Last year there was a bug in official scenarios that have Blitz (mostly Eastern Front). If you did an Air Strike and rolled a flag, your opponent could ignore it if in sandbags or ruins. This made those scenarios less fun. They fixed it by about New Years.

Lately, I culled the expert problems and made a page for those rules problems and bugs that affect official Online scenarios, titled Official Scenario Errors.
If you check these out and post your experiences, maybe THESE PROBLEMS will get some positive attention, too.

I've tested plenty, and there's a few more Wadi issues in expert mode that presumably affect Knightsbridge, but can't be sure, and I'm nearly out of G.I.s.

By the way: it seems that for expert games, this has been fixed:
•T-52. Caves on Hills. Error allows Allied infantry to roll 2x to attempt to seal caves (i.e. to change to hill hex). One of which automatically succeeds.
It worked as should in "across the creek".

You are mistaken, sir. You can still click on the wire-cutters and the caves will automatically seal, turning into a hill, regardless of whether you roll a star or not.

If I remember correctly, my opponent in the game below tried to seal the caves. Only one set of 3 dice was rolled (not 2 sets of 3 dice) and since he failed to roll a star, the cave remained open. I move throught the caves later on.

I cannot consult the replay on this computer (some bug in IE and no admin rights to re-install), but I will try to remember to check it again tonight if I got the right replay and which turns are important for this subject.

Clicking Yes will make it work correctly. Double-clicking the "cut-wire" symbol is the problem.

Since last August, I've posted some more. The critical ones are where a player can cheat.

(Cheat is a strong word, so let me explain. A newbie doesn't know all the rules and goes by what the game enforces, so they can be given some slack. But those who play in expert mode should know the railroad track rule: tanks must stop, and they will play that way; but others move through it since the game doesn't enforce it. Best not to have railroad tracks in your scenario -or play with them- unless you play a friend or acquaintance who will follow the rule.)

The Ambush bug allows your opponent to know when you have Ambush when you've set it to manual, and can decide not to battle with a wounded unit in close assault to cheat you.

The latest one I remember reading about in a past thread was brought to me this week. In scenarios with Recon as Air Strike you can do the Air Strike in the wrong section. It doesn't check after you finish ordering that you still have one unit highlighted in the correct section.

I wanted to bring this back to attention, because these cheats take the fun out of the game. I was told at the game convention that some people no longer play opponents Online because of these cheats. In the retail trade, they say in general only a fraction of customers complain (1/6?) but the others move on and don't look back. I believe the customer is not always right, but when they are, something should be done.

I must be honest: I wouldn't even consider stopping a tank over a rail track or force myself to close assault if I know that my opponent has Ambush Embarassed
Recon as Air Power case is different, because I would be «bending» the natural playing process, and it wouldn't feel «right».

As I said on another thread, I try to limit who I play against to people on my buddy list. By doing that, the frustration with these bugs can be alleviated. My online tournament has a lot of them that I either use in my scenario with an explanation or we all agree not to take advantage of the ones I can't conrol. I think we are having a blast playing these scenarios even with all the flaws. I highly recommend putting all of these gentlemen on your buddy list. You'll have a lot more fun playing SFTF.

I would like to point out that there are also players out there who do not play the board game, but only know M44 from playing online.

They might not even know some of the rules, because they have learned them from playing online. They would not think twice about crossing a railroad using BEL with anti tank guys, etc. because to them these are the normale rules. I have played against very serious and dedicated players who are not familiar with the differences in rules online and offline. And do we not have referees in face to face tournaments to explain/clarify rules that are vague or not known to us?

Rather than shunning players who see the rules differently then you or turning away from M44 online altogether I would advocate an approach in which we would explain to them what is happening and so improving our own experience, their experience and the community as a whole.

And if somebody "walks over" an air strike to a different section I usually tell t hem that is not supposed to be possible but will just play on. He will be the wiser for it, I will have told him it's not according to the board rules (his decision what to do with hat.) and we will still have the experience of a nice game. Even if it was a winning card, he might as well have had a recon in that section.

Yes it might be that somebody walks over with the anti tank guys and destroys your armor unit. That would be harder to swallow, because you weren't calculating that in. But even then it is a nice opening to discuss the rules with your opponent and explain that that is normally not possible/done.

But I feel it is overreacting if you turn away from the online game altogether. In face to face play similar things happen and you will have to resolve them also.

Very true Jeronimon!

Good point of view, this is much like a "teaching hospital" and we are the "good doctors" of the community!

And as Clorofila pointed out, I too wouldn't think twice about certain rules having played almost exclusively online (I only own the base set), ok, maybe I would think twice and do it anyway, but that is besides the point!

"We learn something new every day" is true most every day, if it applies to a game and situation, learn and pass it on, you will be much the wiser for it! Very Happy

Again, 1 move usually doesn't cost you a game, I can personally attest to this recently where I had several questionable moves on my part, if done differently, then maybe I win, perhaps not.

It is a game, play, have fun, enjoy the experience, learn and take, hopefully, with victory in hand, the experience as whole on to your next battle. Cool

I am not sure if I understand what you are posting here.

Are you saying that:

A player can use a center Recon and choose a center unit then 3 more units in an adjacent flank. Then unorder the center unit and choose another unit in the flank?

In other words, all targeted units end up being outside the center?

Ah. Someone must have found this by accident.

Any player who knows the rules and takes advantage of such a bug online during a game - well Shocked
