I was wondering if anyone had the idea to play specific races based on a particular portfolio. For example, in a 6-player game with all the expansions:

(Bivouacking) Orcs
(Ransacking) Goblins
(Fortified) Kobolds
(Swamp) Trolls

(Alchemical) Wizards
(Dragonmaster) Sorcerors
(Historian) Priestesses
(Spirit) White Ladies

(Merchant) Halflings
(Hill) Dwarves
(Wealthy) Leprechauns
(Stout) Pygmies

(Hordes of) Skeletons
(Marauding) Ghouls
(Were) Ratmen
(Corrupt) Homunculi

(Diplomatic) Humans
(Commando) Amazons
(Berserk) Barbarians
(Mounted) Gypsies

(Forest) Elves
(Flying) Pixies
(Barricade) Giants
(Seafaring) Tritons

I divided the races based on particular lore, and tried to give each one a power that would be best associated with them.

As far as I know, that's a new idea. It looks like an interesting way to play, though it cuts way down on the variable nature of the game, which is one of the many strengths of the game.

Have you tried this idea with your friends? How did it work?

That looks like a very good idea!! Did you try it? How is it?

While you're at it, why not make the dwarves a wee bit stronger? It might not be thematic, however giving them flying or some other strong power (with relatively high unit count) could be very interesting to make them playable!

Cool idea, but without the random nature of the race/power combos, you'd have to ensure that all your match-ups are very well balanced against each other.

I would do this maybe with the races, and randomly hand out special powers. I do like how you matched up the powers with the races, though. Forest elves, etc. Nice job Smile

I'm guessing that each set is the set that a particular player is supposed to have during the game?

This could still be pretty random: just write each combo down on a 3x5 card, each player shuffles his "hand". The first 1 out is the race you begin with, when a player finishes his first turn he flips up the next card, showing which combo he will play next whenever he chooses to go in decline. (This way every player has the opportunity to plan accordingly, as in the regular game.)

After player 1 plays his first turn, the other players roll to see who goes next, etc. etc. This mimics the mechanic of the column somewhat, where player 1 knows which races will follow, but not necessarily which order they will enter the board.

I like this idea. It's creative, and offers something fresh to the game, using the parts you already have. I'll probably try this out at some point.
