D-Day / 69th Commemoration Thu, 06 June 2013 02:47
If you are in or around Bedford, VA this morning, come commemorate the 69th anniversary of D-Day with us at the National D-Day Memorial.

It was this singular historic event which was in some ways the inspiration for Memoir '44.

Quote:

Memoir '44 was born following the meeting of the noted game designer Richard Borg, Days of Wonder, and the Mission for the 60th Anniversary of the Landings and Liberation of France

Richard Borg had designed a WWII game using his Command and Colors Game System, which he had already used in the past for his famous Battlecry game (a game about the US Civil War), and was looking for a game publisher. Days of Wonder was interested, and discussions were already under way, when the Mission for the 60th Anniversary came in and accerelated the process.

The main idea was to design a game that would convey the memory of the D-Day events to the younger generation. The challenge was to build something that would be simple for young people, but not simplistic. The game had to be historically accurate, and fun to play. Only the game system developed by Richard could achieve all these goals.

The result is an exceptional game that will please children, parents and grand-parents, who will be able to share together the memory of History.

I am so thankful for what those men accomplished that day and for those who through creative play and storytelling keep the memory alive. Thanks DOW.

I'd love to, but the commute is a killer.

Happy D-Day anniversary everyone.

I also would love to join you for this celebration! Like Phread, the commute is a little rough from Abu Dhabi... Smile

We're there is spirit, though, and I'm so thankful that there are places like the National D-Day Memorial that help the generations remember the sacrifices people made for the rest of us. I hope the ceremony goes well!

It would be an even worse commute from Jersey (Channel Islands), good luck with the ceremony though!

Our thoughts go out to everyone involved, surviving or otherwise, who fought for our freedom.

My thoughts and prayers go to everyone that was involved in the Normandy Landings. I play the trumpet and played live taps at 6 ceremonies this past memorial day. One lady came up to me after I had played and thanked me from the depths of her heart. She told me that her father landed on Normandy beach on June 6, 1944 and he was a company bugler. She said that he played taps for many soldiers that day. My playing of taps brought back many deep, pleasant memories of her father. If you ask me, that is what it is all about. No amount of money could repay for the comments that I have received from family members when taps is played.

Just watched "The Longest Day"... Great D-Day movie with an all star cast.

Best thing to do on D-Day is remember it. Fewer and fewer of those men every day... thanks guys.

Wish I could have gone to Bedford, and thanks to Everyone who plays M44. That is how we remember.

Hello,

to commemorate the 69th Anniversary, I strongly recommend watching Inside WW2 http://natgeotv.com/uk/inside-world-war-ii

A fascinating 3 chapter documentary with shocking images.

We will also be playing tonight Brummbar's mini campaign "The D-Day"

cheers
