Time for an update? Mon, 03 June 2013 20:20

This is a general enquiry to the DoW team responsible for Memoir 44 Online ...

Are you able to give any indication at all as to whether the Memoir44 Online community can expect to see a further development/update to the existing game as it stands?

(And if so, might we see such an update this side of the Autumn?) ... Wink

Respectfully,

Jim

Also, 2 'ghost' games open in the lobby, Twin Villages and expert Battle of Mairy. Weeks go by and these games remain...

Just fix some of the darn bugs!
And give us some kind of news if Memoir 44 Online will receive any types of updates in the future or if this is the end of development.

It would be nice just to know if their policy IS to develop the online game further, even without knowing any details ..

Even though we do understand they are embarked in other projects, like the Small World development, it would be really nice for us, the community, to know whether the M44 online and the M44 editor will suffer any major update in the near future.

As Jaykay have said, with no details. Just say whether is planned or not.

Thanks

I know it isn't any consolation to you guys, but the DoW programming crew have been crazy busy (I can't imagine how hard they must work) creating the new Ticket to Ride game for Android. You can read about it here: http://blog.daysofwonder.com/2013/06/05/ticket-to-ride-goes- android-available-on-google-play-finally/

Because they're a small team, I'm sure all of their time has been taken with this App and the new Small World 2 App they've been working on. It's not surprising that they haven't had a lot of time for M44. I can't imagine this game makes them a lot of money, simply because it doesn't have the wide appeal for people.

I know it doesn't help anybody wanting to see M44 get more attention, but at least now we have an idea of how busy the crew really is!

I wouldn't know about the plans no matter if there were any or not...I'm just saying that we know they are very busy with lots of other projects and they are a business that will try to make money. I know that Ticket to Ride makes a lot more money for them than Memoir '44 (based on the huge number of sales they have talked about before) so it makes sense that they will focus their energy on TTR over this game.

Again, don't take my reply as an answer in any way. I'm not "in the know" about M44 Online. Smile

As noted before

I don't expect to see much for M44 or M44 online this year

2014 will be when things will happen.

10th anniversary of the game

70th anniversary of D-Day

You know, do stuff in the year when you are going to have free marketing buzz anyway.

Small World and Ticket to Ride you can do any time.

2014 will only happen once.

And also 2014 is the 100th anniversy of WW1 and Mr Borg has stated his desire to do a WW1 game.

Disclaimer: I am a DoW and M44 fan.

I would not ask for a major release in 2013 - but we have had no release or software update since January 2012.

Quite frankly that is extremely poor from DoW. Not even a bug fix. The only "release" were some more scenarios implemented by an enthusiast, not DoW itself.

Sure DoW have to make money, sure they have got other priorities, but they should assign some programming resource to M44 online. They are doing themselves and ourselves a disservice by continued lack of real support.

I've given up reporting bugs because they clearly aren't being fixed.
That is sad because I got an award for (mainly) my bug reporting during the beta phase.

Please DoW at least a bug fix in 2013.

Re:Time for an update? Thu, 06 June 2013 07:02
If money is the problem, then they should eliminate the free trial for all official scenarios. If they add 6 more 0-credit scenarios, two for each front (not the best ones) then people will still be able to play for free, but would be encouraged to buy some G.I.s for the other scenarios. Right now, how many people are just getting a new email account every couple days and playing 19 or 20 games for free? We mentioned in another thread about a player who's got 3000+ games under his belt this way.

We can write, saying what we want, or we can stop buying G.I.s until they do some updates or bug-fixes. I took 4 months off until they added the "new" scenarios, then bought some more G.I.s. Unfortunately, I don't think many people followed my lead. I was down to a dozen G.I.s and was going to let it go again, but signed up for a tournament and bought another 200 pack to get me through. I seldom play SFTF, since scenarios are posted with items that don't work. Note: because I bought a Major Pack to begin with, the Sergeant Pack still lets me play those scenarios, if I want.

As I've stated before, DoW did have a significant hand in these scenarios. Unless you know the full details, please do not assess how much they did or did not participate.

And so the 6th passed without any news. Ww2 ended and perhaps our lovely game too. It's a pity but i'm sure dow knows what they're doing. I can only keep dreaming about breakthrough online. 2014 perhaps?

If they can't afford hiring more programmers, why not a Kickstarter just likewise the Smallworld 2 Project?

That's a GREAT dream ! Very Happy

As Van Voort says, maybe 2014 will be the time for something significant, such as a Breakthrough expansion!! (?)

It would be lovely if DoW could even just indicate their efforts towards something appearing on the horizon, if indeed there were any plans beyond the developments of other games as Ras has highlighted ..

Some people have said that DoW is a Board Game Company first! Well that does not make sense if they are spending all their efforts on electronic versions of other games.
PC games I would assume would outsell the board game with less overhead.
If it was your company how would you treat your customers who are asking about the future of one of your products.
We are the ones guessing what dates and year that we would see some updates and bug fixes that is the job of DoW to keep their customers informed.

I can think of at least two instances in the past where DoW did inform their customers in advance about upcoming expansions, and a surprising number of customers lambasted them for it, rather than being grateful for exciting, new expansions. (In one case, there was an unavoidable delay in the delivery date. In the other case, some players felt that some of the figures weren't historically accurate enough.)

I was glad to see the updated FAQ released on June 6 (and it really is a huge expansion over the previous version). I'm sure a lot of us were hoping for more, but I continue to trust that in the long run we'll be delighted by whatever they have in store for us.

I like the game very much, but noted that there is no follow up on tickets for support (at least not mine) and the ranking issue is still not addressed yet (you can win a match-rematch, but still lose ranking, this being the main ranking issue). I bought the game for 60 hard euros and therefore expect a bit more service. I can understand you forget about supporting a game after some years, but not after like one year after its official release. At least give notice to the players, what they can or cannot expect. Communication, also with not following up on support tickets, is all-important. See you guys in 'the ring' Razz

Re:Time for an update? Mon, 10 June 2013 00:16
GS, you raise some good questions.

When Memoir Online was first released in open beta in late 2010, there were lots of "bugs," because of the many situations that can arise. Many bug reports were filed, DoW responded to them promptly, and they released several updates within a fairly brief period. The inequities of the rating system were discussed intensely, and DoW actually released a white paper explaining how they are calculated. (The system also puts too much weight on win/loss, and relatively little weight on the degree of victory, so a 1d difference between a 6-5 win and a 5-6 loss can be 40 or 50 points against a weaker opponent.) However, since the urgent priority was to make the game playable, fixing the rating formula has taken a back seat. While it's fun to have a high rating, and it feels bad to lose 100 points in the span of 3-4 hard-luck losses, Drew Carey was right: The points don't matter.

Someone posted a link recently (somewhere on this board) to an interview with eric, the head of DoW, in which he mentioned that they do all their programming in-house, to maintain better control over the quality. A consequence of that choice is that their throughput is limited.

It has also meant that they haven't released any updates to Memoir Online that included bug fixes or new capabilities in over a year, while they've been focusing on some of their other games.

I don't know how long it will be until the next release for M-Online, but I trust that it will be coming. And until then, I'm having an indecent amount of fun at the Official and User-generated scenarios that are available.

I agree somewhat with what you say Sam but as far as "M44 Online" is concerned compared to other PC games DoW lags considerably in maintaining the game especially with bug-fixes.
I love M44 and think that DoW is a very good game company but as a M44 "Online" player the support and communication really stinks.

Re:Time for an update? Mon, 10 June 2013 07:30
I have to agree with Generalstrike on the communication issue. When I began playing M444 online any of my bug reports or complaints were handled very fast and efficiently. Now I get the automated response and then: nothing. (Even after repeated asking about the problem)

If you decide to not give that support please tell me so.

Dear J. you have sent us a bug report/complaint. At this moment in time we cannot commit resources to your problem. etc etc.

Would be kinder than nothing.

Having said that I would of course prefer a return to the previous situation where issues raised were answered and/or even solved.

I still immensely enjoy the game and community, but feel that it could be just a bit better with some customer communication.

As always: see you on the battlefields. Cool

of course what we can do actively as a community is to make together a list of for example ten things we would like to be solved or improved as soon as DOW team has some time to invest in the game (hint, hint, nudge, nudge). There are even websites where you can have polls, so we can even prioritize our 'most important needs' democratically, after listing the subjects. That makes it more convincing as consumers versus producers. I think it is also hard for DOW to face a crowd in which there are always complaints. If we can collectively offer a wish list we democratically chose, that makes it easier for them to abide by. Also: we can't improve DOW really, because we like the game too much to put into effect a general strike Very Happy , but we can improve our community to communicate as a group with DOW, with a more or less general consensus.

I like to play the game, and I like a good ranking system, which actually means something, and they can happen at the same time, because it is not a technical nono. With all due respect, the slogan 'have fun, don't mind the points' is wrong: it is not we who should adapt, as 'good sports' to a system that is incorrect and befits a beginning game design only, but it is the makers who should make a ranking system that at least lets the winner of a match-rematch situation gain points and never lose. I am willing to give my best mind to working out such a system (in detailed words!), although I am not a programmer, just having some common sense and a lot of enthusiasm for the game. Actually I did already for a great deal in my mind, but will not publish it as yet, because the writing down with comment will take me considerable time, nit-picker as I am, but I will do that if there is some programmer with time to work on it and willing to look again into it. Or we do it together on the forum, so DOW 'only' has to implement it Laughing

I will insist about the damned 2 "ghost" games: last time I was looking for an opponent (no players available in the lobby) I started an official scenario and waited for someone to join in. At some point, I read in the chat box: "[lobby] Anyone for a game? I will play any scenario". I mean, is this frustrating or what?! Of course I went out and invited that player for a match, but how many players are looking for a match and disregard the opened games, ending up by leaving the lobby?

That is junk, garbage, and it's on our way! If anyone in charge is reading this, please END THE DAMNED GHOST GAMES!!! I'm tired of sending out private messages to Eric, Yann, etc!!!
Do I have to actually abuse the language to call some attention here???...

Re:Time for an update? Wed, 19 June 2013 13:18
As the original poster to this thread, I've been fascinated to read from others who appear to share similar frustrations to myself, politely expressing their concern over the apparant lack of interest DoW are showing in taking Memoir 44 further.

The idea of a petition listing the Top 10 fixes may be one way forward but I'm really not sure what it would achieve .. most of the items on such a list will have been mentioned already a number of times on other threads on this forum, with little result.

My real concern is that the original post was directed to the DoW (Memoir44Online) crew . (Apologies I don't know their names personally).

As yet there has not been a response from them made here or privately, (and there may never be if that is their policy), however one of the points made by a number of customers referred to the poor communication between us, (the customers), and the team itself.

My original post was a request to DoW, to ask if there were any plans, of any description, to invest in the game further (be they bug fixes, new releases, new rating system, whatever).

My only sadness is that there has been nil response so far from the DoW team, (similar to the Bug Reports I guess) .. not even a 'DoW are unable to comment on your request, but rest assured we are planning something epic to come your way in the future !" Wink Or suchlike ... Wink Well, I can dream... ! Wink

Even a response stating what we all suspect, ie that resources are currently being focused on other games at present, would be better than nothing.

At the end of the day, are the DoW team even reading this forum???

I would have to conclude, they are not even doing that, as this post was politely referenced toward them, asking for a response of any kind ...

Sorry if this appears negative, I'm not negative toward the company or the game itself, I love it, but the communication issues that clearly exist can, in this case I feel, be justifiably criticized ..

Bad news (and a warning to anyone who might read this): apparently, people can't read what I write in the in-game chat box. I've just had an awkward experience with hester24 (to whom I beg forgiveness, if this is what really happened), after my M44O crashed. Returning to the game and after, in the lobby, hester24 and other people never replied to my answers.
I didn't make use of abusive language on any occasion, so I can only see this is as a software flaw of some kind (caused by the crash?). Anyway, it is not the first time this happens...
