But only if they can make it online multiplayer not like Smallworld for IPad which is advertised on the website as online yet it is a simple mobile game against a cheating AI opponent. There is absolutely nothing online about it at all.

different operating system to begin with...plus they don't have a lot of programming staff. Trust me, I've been running Brice ragged already with all the items I have found and/or need enhancements. And some are not easy to fix either.

So even if M44 is easier than smallworld, I wouldn't count on anything there for QUITE some time, if ever.

DoW has to look for the best return for their efforts.
iPad vs PC/Linix, more scenarios vs iPad port, no brainer really.

Apple don't make it easy to make apps that run on their hardware and Windoze and Linix.

I can make M44 for iOS, but only if I got official support from DoW.

Do you have any idea what you are talking about? Do you know how large the iPad user community already is (and exponentially growing)? Are you aware that DOW already made one of their games playable on the iPad? Do you know that they have plans to make it also online multiplayer?

Have you heard about X-Plane maybe? Yes that is an independent flightsim that was multiplatform for years available on Apple, Linux and MS Windows. Yet exactly half a year later that the developer made it available on the iPhone and Ipad he started collecting Ferraris.

Hey Axelb9, do you think there might be a way to say this without being quite so sarcastic? You come off kind of aggressive, and maybe that wasn't your intention...or maybe you're just having a rough day, but here on the Days of Wonder we all try to be respectful of other people and their views, even if we don't agree with them.

No there is not. You have read the other thread too - presumably also my reply. First 'stop complaining' here some 'it is a no brainer really'. Do you read all the posts or only mine?

I read all the posts...but because of my finely tuned skills of observation I notice some major hostility in your posts, more than any other in this thread.

Phread put forth an opinion about how it might be hard for DoW to program an iPad version of Memoir '44...and from my view of things he wasn't being rude about it (aside from the 'no brainer' comment, though it didn't look like he was directing that at you). Your post is overly hostile and seems agressive.

You can read a further reply on the other thread...

First, I'm a gamer, just like other folks. Know of no inside info about DoW.

Plus also I know roughly how many people there are in DoW programming - trust me, it is VERY small (won't say the #).

With that being the case, they (DoW) has to put priorities on things. Plus you don't know what DoW might have planned in the future (i.e. maybe an add on to another online game). [nor do I..just saying - based on past things since I've been here basically since the get go, like other folks].

Thus for DoW to support basically another platform would be hard for them..namely since this is YET out of beta yet. And I suspect there it might be in beta for a while, since some things are just becoming operational (resume for instance) plus other things not operational (the item in the lower left corner on main menu which I cannot think of - but you know the item!)

That thing in the lower left corner is Expert Mode...it's going to be great when it's ready for everyone! Cool

In another thread in the Smallworlds forums they hinted at having some major thing up their sleeve for maybe 1st quarter next year regarding a multiplayer version of Smallworld. Right now online multiplayer is being tested for Memoir. Putting the two together it is not totally out of context that one day we could see an online multiplayer iPad version of Memoir 44. It would be really nice because the Smallworld iPad application is a beautiful piece of software too. DoW already put their feet in the iPad market so they have plenty of experience maybe just some of you do not relize this. Once the current beta is cleared they would most probably translate the experiences gained into Smallworld online multiplayer since the application is ready for the iPad. From then on Memoir on the iPad is the smallest step furthermore Memoir would have a much larger customer appeal because of it's setting and easier to grasp rules.

I would love to see Memoir '44 Online for the iPad! I don't have an iPad yet, but if this game made in onto that device it would only be a matter of a few days before I would buy one (since I want one already). Razz

I suspect that you're right...the crew can use skills gained from one project to help with the other...and their plans might eventually include making Memoir '44 for the iPad, but I know that once they release version 1.0 of the Memoir '44 Online game they will start working on the huge line of expansions and scenarios that will add to the variety of our online experience. So it could be a little while before they have the time and manpower to get this game on the iPad.

Having said that, I'm always amazed at how quickly DoW works on things so it could be that they complete something like this a lot faster than I expect. Very Happy

A "port" to another platform can be easier and quicker if 1) you plan it from the beginning and 2) you have experience in making software for the other platform.

However DoW have to balance competing priorities, completing the beta, further scenarios and expansions and a port to another platform. As a business they have to determine where they get the best return for their efforts - our gratitude and kind thoughts don't put food on their table.

I don't understand the differences between the platforms enough to talk on this. I would not be surprised though, if DoW thought ahead and tried to make it easy for themselves to make this shift. But time will tell! Smile

I think that like Axel said, there is probably a large enough population of people who would play Memoir '44 Online on the iPad that they could make a lot of money with it. I don't know if they plan to create this, but it looks like it would make good business sense.

Can you imagine being able to simply move the units around the board with your finger or drag the cards into play just by touching the screen?! It would be even more like the tabletop game without the set-up and it would be so much fun. Cool

I have Smallworld on the iPad and it is a masterpiece. Beautiful, easy to manage and boasts a very strong killer AI. My only regret is the DOW advertises this as an online game already wheras it is clearly not online. You can play against the AI or another player just like a boardgame. Online multiplayer just like Memoir would be a killer though as Smallworld as a game relies a lot more on the knowledge and experience of the player than Memoir which has a giant luck element.

I've played Small World on the iPad a few times because I a few friends have it, and I agree it is very fun. Great graphics, good AI (from the few times I played) and perfect interface.

If Memoir '44 ever did make it onto the iPad I think it would have to be online because otherwise your opponent would always be able to see your cards! Shocked That wouldn't work...but the whole moving units and such with the touch of a finger would be so natural for Memoir '44 and it would be such a convenient way to play! Plus if you had the iPad with a 3G network (do they have them with the 4G network yet?), then you could really play anywhere since the online requirement wouldn't matter!! Cool It would be a wonderful thing! Smile
