What Should I Buy Next? Mon, 22 July 2013 23:00
Hi Memoir Lovers: I recently started playing Memoir 44 with my 2 boys. Needless to say they are now hooked. I currently have ONLY the base Memoir 44 boxed set.

What should I get next?

One boy LOVES truck so I was wondering about the Equipment Pack as it appears to have trucks...but my instinct is to go with one of the region expansions like Easter Front.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

There have been quite a few threads on this topic in the past, but I am sure you'll get many responses.

I would go with the Eastern Front expansion if I had it to do again (although my first expansion purchase was the Terrain Pack) and then the Pacific.

But if you search the older topics or wait a bit, you'll get plenty more opinions.

Hello,

I think all of the army packs are cool. What is more alluring for you? Bloody battles in the pacific islands or the harsh Russian Winter? Or maybe the hot sands of North African desert?

Anyway, consider getting the Terrain Pack & the Winter/Desert boards along with your chosen Army Pack. That will allow you to Play an important amount and variety of scenarios.

Welcome to the Memoir Forums. May you have a question, try here. There are a good bunch of experienced players always willing to help.

Hi and welcome.

Tough choices. I like the Eastern Front myself but the Pacific expansion is right up there.

Winter Wars is very good. The Equipemnt Pack is also a good buy.

If you can, you may consider buying as many of the avialable expansions as possible at one time. They go out of print from time to time and some, like the Air Pack, may never be reprinted.

Good luck and have fun with your sons playing this wonderful game.

John

Personal, the pacific theater is my favorite army expension.

Both the Japanese and US marines have great army rules with makes fighting in the pacific very tense.
But.... like other people have said, Eastern Front en Med. Theater are also a must have Smile

So you won't be sorry for buying any (of just all) of these!

Welcome to the Forum!

Hi John,
Do you have a favorite part of wwii or history?
I would start there. Any of the expansions will bring lots of fun. That's what the game is all about.
Your two boys will become great history buffs with M44.
Welcome to the community.

Great responses folks! I plan to review all of the links in this thread in a lot of detail. Smile

@5 Star General. I think my favorite area is actually the Pacific Theater so that appeals to me. The real people I think I need to please though are my boys. Wink One of them is such a fanatical truck lover that I may go with the Equipment Pack even though it is not my first choice.

We are playing M44 a LOT right now. We play at least one mission every other day! On the weekends we may play several missions. We have already replaced the plastic army boxes with stronger ones from an office supply store and the cards are getting dull. I may need to sleeve them soon. They would ask to play more often except on the odd days we play video games...right now Zelda Wind Waker. We started board game days to prevent so much tube time. Now it has almost switched and they would rather play board games. Very Happy

Wish I had a bunch of money to spend on expansions... Sad

A great tribute to Memoir!

BTW the Eastern Front's Commissar rule can be a little confusing so my vote for a beginner would be the Pacific. The Japanese are great fun to play Wink

Zdrastvitsje kamaratski John Taber, although I feel as though you have already decided to go for pacific I still would like to say a few good words for the Eastern front. Smile

The biggest advantage: Yes the Commissar is hard to play, but on the other hand forces you to think ahead a minimum of two cards (if not more). I find that this helps beginning players to think ahead when they don't play with the Commissar as well.

Personally I find the winter landscape very appealing and I associate this more with war than the jungle. This despite the fact that the dutch did fight the Japanese in the jungles of indonesia. But as I said that is personal.

Whatever you choose will be fine, as it will inevitably lead to you buying the other expansion in the future. Memoir is an exciting game but it sure gets you hooked and spending a lot of money. (Well worth it in my opinion of course. Smile )

I also rejoice in youngsters fitting in boardgaming next to their "digital" gaming.

Don't listen to all these Russian propaganda Laughing

The pacific theater is the expansion to choose! fierce battles, Japanese Imperail Army rules, brave American marines, Destroyers shooting longe range across the beaches, Jungle warfare, Caves, and so on!

Ofcourse I'm just joking here (just in case somebody missed it Razz )
Eastern front is also a good choice if your buying an army expansion. Just as I said, every expansion has his on pros and cons, you will have fun with any (or, even better, all) these expansions.

If you love tanks, choose the Eastern Front expansion. Also, the Commissar rule is not that hard to grasp. In fact, I find it a lot easier than remembering special rules for Japanese army and Marines. I almost always forget the Marine rule when I play Pacific, which is rarely I admit as I prefer Europe and Med theaters.

Plus I love the winter tiles. However, for full affect you would want the Winter/Desert board, which although not required, would set you up nicely for the Med Theater expansion.
