Two powers that make me hesitate Mon, 05 August 2013 13:32
Hi, everybody ! Here you have two of the special powers I made up :

Magic (5) : for a magic region you own or conquer, you can conquer an adjacent region as if it was empty, once per turn and per magic region.

Phoenix (5) : when in decline, each time you, or someone, abandon a region that is adjacent to your Phoenix race, place one race token there, provided that there are some left. Priestesses can be placed like any other race, not minding their special Ivory Tower ability.

The main problem is, I don't know how many tokens each should grant. What do you think about Magic ? Is it as powerful as Commando, which should then be 4 tokens ? Or 5 is okay ?

It's even worse for Phoenix. I think it can be very powerful, but one has to wait very long before he/she can use it (one turn to conquer, one to go in decline, one to conquer with a new race, and one to abandon regions next to the Phoenix race). Saying that, I think 5 is okay, but what do you think ?

Not sure about the number of tokens or actual usefulness, but I find the concept of your Phoenix interesting.

Commando is unlimited in it's use. I'd say your Magic power is more akin to Were-. Since it doesn't grant any bonus coins, I'd be loathe to give it fewer tokens than that...unless you are specifically trying to make it underpowered, which is fine.
To be clear, you are allowing a player to conquer any 1 region adjacent to each of his magic regions, each turn. (Not just any magic region--it has to be those he controls.)

Magic seems to be a combination between mountain and sorcerer's powers.
When you say 'per magic region' to make sure I'm reading it right, if I have 3, I can take 3 different regions?

Sounds pretty good, but as DannyMack said, it doesn't help you that much in regards to victory coins. You'd get your magic lands conquered on every turn, completely neutering the power.

Not necessarily Wink considering that there is an average of three or four regions that are adjacent to a magic region, and that you don't conquer them all in one single turn, there is no way you can use your power on all the adjacent regions before you go into decline... not to mention some will attack you.

Hi

Here's my take, starting with Magic.

A dragon that conquers one region as empty, with -1 and immunity, is worth 5. Flames can conquer as many regions as empty as long as they are connected to the volcano (only caveat), are a 4 race or equivalent to a 3 power. Finally, a normal game might look like what, conquer 1 magic region per turn for 3 turns? So assuming you don't lose them, you would get 1 free conquer on turn 1, 2 on turn 2 and 3 on turn 3. That's an average of 2 per turns, give or take. Assuming that you conquered regions with 2 tokens, it's like having a -4 per turn (or like the amazons, who are a 6 race or 5 power).

Now, that said, you are weaker than flames (so definitely not a 3), about equivalent to a 5 power and 6 race (=5 power), so I would definitely not say worth only 4 tokens.

If you get magic regions eaten, or are slower to conquer them, then it would be a weak power... If anything, I would try to boost it up.

Concerning the phoenix ability, I find it really good!! It is hard to find an equivalent. It seems like the opposite to reborn (where you replace 1-2 in-decline tokens with 1-2 active ones) which is a 5 power. You allow to add more in-decline tokens; however, they are declined, therefore it's like getting +1def and +1VP per declined token. The catch is that let's say you beef up your declined region to a max... well if your active race is not doing so well, or if you sacrifice your active race to help the declined one to grow, when you decline next, you'll lose a lot in a single turn... Definitely it deserves at least a 5, but again, I'm debating if it is underpowered... unless you beef up the active race, but then it is like reborn...

I'll be posting very soon a question I have concerning one of my powers, if you have any insight it would be appreciated!
