So probably at least 150 wins needed (not the 250 mentioned soemwhere above).

Re:Welcome to new Colonels! Sat, 18 May 2013 20:00
I think the key here with the Col promotion is the kind of wins you have not so much the amount.

I spent hours working with the Cadets, so 5 of them getting promoted with me was highly likely.
It could be that a player not doing this may need closer to around 250 wins to get these numbers.

Training new Cadets into Battle is the requirement.

I would not have felt very good about my self by just taking a first game Cadet and expecting them to know much about the Pacific rules for example (what fun is that for either of us), so for each one that was interested to do this (Not all were) I would walk them through each play, explaining to them why and answering all their many questions.

It made for a very very long game at times and one that I would often then loose because I was just basicly playing myself.

However so many of them were over joyed, grateful and said they had a real good time so that just made the game for me too,
many would later keep inviteing me to different scenarios so I could teach that one(Arghh Commissar).

Bottom line is once I had got used to playing this way,
I cant say enough how I did completely enjoy it myself and then getting the promotion made it one of the best yet for me.

So watch out for my Cadets hopefully they are some of the best new troops out there.

Lt Col - Col
160 Wins.

Re:Welcome to new Colonels! Sun, 11 August 2013 03:37
Well, the Colonel's club seems rather deserted--I suppose everyone is on vacation--so I will just announce myself, and say a little about my journey to this point, for anyone who might possibly be interested--

When I made LTC in May of 2012 (yes, you read that right--it was a while ago!) I made a list of all of the regular scenarios that were available at that time (which obviously did not include the 17 that were released in December 2012). I then kept track of which ones I won, and from which side. When I could not find a match for a scenario I needed, I looked for cadets to play--but did not keep track of how many I played.

Of the scenarios on my list, I won all of them as the Allies, and all but Carentan Causeway and Utah Beach (which I later found out were not necessary) as the Axis. I also played a number of the December 2012 scenarios, but only when they were part of a tournament, or someone else invited me to play one of them. I am almost positive that I have not played, let alone won, all of them.

Besides taking 15 months to get from LTC to COL, I was also at 900+ games by then (although I did not keep track of how many of those I played after making LTC). So I am definitely at the other end of the spectrum from the fellow (I forget who it was, and cannot seem to find it in the thread at the moment) who made it in 3-4 weeks!

So it has been a long journey--I am happy to have finally made it! Will rest a while, then start working on BG--although given my slow pace, I may or may not get there!

Re:Welcome to new Colonels! Sun, 20 October 2013 15:58
Well, no welcome yet. But I will post the stats from march here.

I played 400 official scenarios with the following breakdowns:

West
Axis: 44-17 / 61
Allied: 38-19 / 57
Total: 82-36 / 118

East
Axis: 39-14 / 53
Allied: 26-30 / 56
Total: 65-44 / 109

MED
Axis: 27-14 / 41
Allied: 29-10 / 39
Total: 56-24 / 80

PACIFIC
Axis: 30-13 / 43
Allied: 37-13 / 50
Total: 67-26 / 93

TOTAL
Axis: 140-58 / 198
Allied: 130-72 / 202
Total: 270-130 / 400

I did not win the following scenarios:

Careten Causeway
Battle for Hill 178
Russian Breakout

RECORD for all offical scenarios
(# = number of games played before I won from both sides)

ARNHEM: 2-0 (2)
ARRACOURT: 2-1 (3)
FIRST ASST WAVE: 3-2 (5)
JUNO BEACH: 2-0 (2)
LIB of PARIS: 2-2 (3)
MONT MOUCHET: 4-4 (7)
MORTAIN: 2-0 (2)
OP COBRA: 3-6 (9)
PT du HOC: 4-2 (6)
PEGASUS BRIDGE: 2-0 (2)
ST VITH: 6-3 (6)
SAVERNE GAP: 4-0 (2)
SWORD: 2-0 (2)
ST MERE ENGLISE: 3-1 (2)
TWIN VILLAGES: 5-0 (2)
VASSIUX: 4-2 (5)
OP SPRING: 5-4 (9)

A real challenge for me as my Allies lost 4 times before finally getting a win. I could never seem to get decent cards in this one.

OP GOODWOOD: 3-0 (2)
UTAH BEACH: 2-0 (2)
CARETEN CAUSEWAY: 1-3 (NA)
GOLD BEACH: 2-0 (2)
CA at ARRAS: 2-0 (2)
VAUMICEL MANOR: 2-0 (2)
CARENTAN: 2-0 (2)
BATTLE FOR HILL 178: 2-2 (NA)

Probably my least favorite scenario. With the Allied RECON AIR STRIKES the German arty will probably be knocked out and the Allies can afford to sit back till this happens. Once the German guns are gone it seems a simple matter for the Allied arty and tanks to pick off the German units one by one.
BRETEL WOOD: 3-2 (4)
FORET d’ ECOUVES: 3-3 (5)
BASTOGNE CORR WEST: 2-0 (2)
BASTOGNE CORR EAST: 2-0 (2)
STRATBOURG: 3-3 (5)
MOYLAND WOOD: 2-2 (4)
BREAKOUT at KLIN: 5-1 (5)
BREAKOUT to LISYANKA: 17-8 (7)

A great scenario which once in a while is thrown out of balance by a German BEL. So as the Russians watch out for any German infantry which gets too close to your baseline and take care before you play BEL as the Germans may have COUNTER-ATTACK.
GATES of MOSCOW: 5-10 (2)

Not one of my favorites and my luck in this one as the Russians does not seem to be there. If the Germans drawn a CENTER ASSAULT and ARMOR ASSAULT the Russians do not stand much of a chance here. Usually the bridge medal can be had sometime in the game by the Germans so they need only to kill 6 units.
PONYRI: 9-3 (6)

One of my favorites and many times, so goes the tank battle, so goes the game. However, control of the 2 town medals can often decide the game.

RED BARR: 6-4 (6)

Again, not one of my favorites as the Germans can usually set the pace and use if RECON AIR STRIKES against the key Russian guns can really tilt things.
SUOMUSSALI: 4-0 (2)

A great one. At first I did not care for this one but it has grown on me.

BATTLE of WARSAW: 2-4 (5)

This one boils down to the German tanks firing at range against the infantry and how well the defenders fire back against the armor. not much to it and I believe the Germans have the edge as the more powerful cards are of less use to the defnders here if the Germans stand off and attack at range. So I am not a fan of this one.

RZHEV: 4-3 (3)
RUSSIAN BREAKOUT: 4-5 (NA)

A toughie for the Russians as they need great cards here and hope the Germans do not get ARMOR ASSAULT. I lost as the Germans in this one as the Russians got the perfect storm of cards and dice to prevail. I nearly won as the Russians (one hit away).
LIPOVEC: 4-1 (2)
BATTLE of KALATCH: 4-4 (2)
1ST ARMORED: 2-2 (4)
DUG in at SIDI OMAR: 3-3 (6)
ESCAPE COASTAL RD: 7-2 (3)
FLANK BIR HAKIM: 2-0 (2)
HELLFIRE PASS: 15-3 (3)

Another favorite.

INTO the CAULDRON: 5-1 (3)
PZS vs GRANTS: 2-0 (2)
SIDI AF: 4-5 (9)
MOTELIMAR: 2-0 (2)
GALLABAT & METEMMA: 2-2 (4)

Promoted to Col after winning this one about a week ago. I certainly thought it would take more than 3 tries as the Axis in this one for the needed win. I had came so close to winning as the Axis in my last try and was so disappointed I did not. I thought it would take me many more tries before I got the win.

TOULON: 4-3 (7)
KNIGHTSBRIDGE: 3-1 (2)
TUNISIA: 3-0 (2)
MIGNANO MONTE LUNGO: 2-2 (3)
GUAM LANDINGS: 5-3 (8 )
GUAM JAP CA: 3-1 (4)
MEAT GRINDER: 36-13 (3)

Probably my favoite scenario of them all. With both sides having all arms present and facing their own challenges. Also as it is a 7 medal game a player has the time to come back if they trail by astute play.
MATANKIAU RIVER: 2-0 (2)
SLOPES of MT AUSTIN: 3-1 (4)
SUGARLOAF HALFMOON: 3-1 (2)
WAKE ISLAND: 2-0 (2)
TENARU: 4-2 (2)
BLOODY RIDGE: 2-3 (3)
CLEARING MATANIKAU RIVER: 4-1 (5)

Record vs the various ranks:

Brig Gen: 22-14 65%
Col: 22-13 63%
Lt Col: 31-21 60%
Major: 31-21 60%
Capt: 10-4 71%
1st Lt: 53-26 67%
2nd Lt: 25-10 71%
Cadet: 59-17 81%
TOTAL: 270-130 68%

A long journey indeed and at the end I was not totally sure of what I needed to get here, so almost lost hope of arriving.

Congratulations tank commander!

A more thorough analysis and scorecard has not been posted. I imagine the Colonel's Club will soon be innudated by those who follow your lead.

Since you seem to be the type of fellow who analyzes things thoroughly, I'll let you in on my secret to making Brigadier General. It's not too complex, really.

Battle #1: get lucky and win it.
Battle #2: get lucky and win it from the other side.
Battle #3: Expert scenario. Get lucky and win it as the Allies.
Battle #4: repeat 49 times.
Battle #53: get lucky and win 50 Expert scenarios as the Axis.
Battle#104: play at least another 146 battles.
Battle #251: lose a regular / original scenario battle.

Then, voila! You will be a General.

Good luck!

Re:Welcome to new Colonels! Sat, 02 November 2013 18:33
Just promoted to Colonel today at night after a dozen more then 250 games. I started playing Memoir '44 the beginning of this year. Now I am going to enjoy the SFTF ones. There are some real gems in there. Pity my own designed one is full of bugs, but after 3 requests to DOW to look into it, because I just used the program to make it, I gave up. Maybe I try it again later. Any tips for this?
