Stout phenomenon on AIs? Thu, 12 September 2013 23:23
Congrats on the new app release, DoW!

I just played a Solo game with me against 2 AIs. Bot #2 picked "Stout Sorcerers" early on. He never went into decline (at the beginning OR end of his turn) even though he was getting beaten rather badly (I think he only had like 3 guys left).

Based on this observation, I think that either the computer isn't very smart (his tenaciousness led him to a final score that was less than half of Bot #1's and my scores), or the "Stout" attribute has a bug that prevents the computer from declining.

I'm not totally sure what to conclude about this phenomenon, but I just wanted to let you know.

Thanks,
--Alex

A similar thing happened to me in a 2 player game.
The bot chose the Peace-loving Amazons and I quickly conquered all his regions, eating up all his regular race tokens. But the bot kept playing his 4 attack tokens over and over again on two empty regions, never actually conquering them, just to get his 3 coins for being peaceful. Meanwhile, I had practically all the other regions covered with my active and inactive races, scoring at least 10 coins more than the bot each turn.

In the old app, the AI would beat me a majority of the time, but it doesn't look like that is the case now (at least not in 2 player mode).

Off topic:
I got Diplomat Tritons at the start of my first 2 player game, which meant that I could conquer regions from sea to sea and all around the lake on my first turn and then just keep my opponent from attacking me, without him ever getting close to catching up (the Bot tried several combos, even a Peace-loving one, none of which could gain anything on me).
In this case, though, I don't think it was the AI's fault.
All I had to do was not go into decline, and he couldn't touch me.
I don't remember the Diplomat power from the old app, and maybe there’s a reason it was left out of the 2 player version?

That Amazons bug happened to me as well, (I reported it in another thread). Only in my case, the AI was earning 0 points because he had chosen merchant amazons

I always leave Diplomat out of my two player games. I wish the app had the ability to pick all abilities/races for inclusion/exclusion.

I will second you on the Stout problem. I have seen multiple times where the AI will not decline a Stout race. One game it was very bad...the AI had ZERO tokens left for his race, yet would not decline the Stout Giants from the game.

Yeah, after playing several four-player games against three Bots, I too have experienced the Stout phenomenon more than once.
It's funny, because the Bots often seem too eager to go into decline, but not when they really should, as with the Stout power and the aforementioned Amazons.

Hopefully, this will be resolved soon.
I love all the new features in Small World 2, but these bugs and the relative stupidity of the AI players make it less addictive to me than the old app.

As a programmer myself, I'm guessing as to what the logic glitch for Stout is. At the beginning of the turn, there is a decision branch for whether or not the race should go into decline. This decision is probably skipped if the race's power is Stout....and then there is nothing at the end of the turn to force the AI to decide if it should decline if it is stout.

Yeah I was surfing to see if anyone else had this problem with Stout. Looks like it's indeed a glitch. I played a 4-player against 3 bots, and Bot 1 had Stout and was kicking trash with it for 2 turns. I thought he'd go in decline while he had like 8 or 9 regions at the end of T2, but he stayed, and I remember thinking, "Well it's only AI, maybe it will be conservative and go next turn."
Nope. We played the next 7 rounds and he never declined. He made 0 on his last turn, going from most promising start to horrible last place. Not to mention it really skews the game board when only 3 players are truly inhabiting a 4-player board.
