Ambush card bug Mon, 19 August 2013 17:36
Had an ambush card in hand and activated it !

But the game failed to detect it !

I found that you have to raise the card early, before the computer switches to Battle Phase. Even then, in Auto Mode it might chose a conflict that doesn't happen, so skips using it that turn. If you choose Manual Mode, then your opponent will know you have it and could decide not to attack with his lone-fig inf (which is what happened the last time I had it in Manual).

Looking at the replay page, you might have had it in Auto Mode (as I do), and it was saving it to use against the lone-fig inf in the rice paddies. Since the first attack from a 3-fig inf scored 2 flags=2 hits plus 1 hit to kill, you didn't get to use it.

I don't advise switching it to Manual (unless playing Johnny), because your opponent will know you have it and may choose not to attack. If you had it in Manual, you probably would have saved it for the 1-fig inf anyway (who didn't attack because you were already dead), because it would be unlikely to get 3 hits or 2 flags on the first Japanese infantry to kill it or keep it from attacking.

Also, don't forget that you aren't seeing things in "real time". When you see them selecting units, they might be seeing the results of their attacks, depending on connection speeds and such. It's not always the case, but that could also have been the problem; you tried to Ambush after he had already attacked.

I have had games where my opponent knowing I had the ambush card played very conservatively resulting in a win for me! Smile

Sometimes just the thought of knowing they hold the ambush card can intimidate.

The only perfect solution to program the ambush card into memoir online, would be that on every attack the opposite player would agree with rolling the dices, even if he's not holding the ambush card.
It would be time consuming and annoying for most players I think.

I'm with JFKoski on this matter (the way to deal with the situation, not what would be the ideal programming solution!) and play Auto-Ambush. From my stats, which I started around 10 months ago, I'm unhappy with the AI choice only around 1 in every 12 situations. Much preferable to «Tell-Ambush»...

Hear hear.

The only Ambush bug that bothers me is that you can play it on a unit in the water... They shouldn't be able to roll any combat dice.

And that a sniper can ambush a tank; a sniper should not be able to attack a tank.

Here is the situation:

A game is tied at 4 to 4. A player has the Ambush card cued up and set on Auto Ambush.

Here is the sequence of attacks with the attacker being Japanese:

1) 3 fig infantry with 3d vs a 3 fig infantry

2) 4 fig infantry with 4d vs a 2 figure infantry

3) 1 fig infantry with 3d (with a possible 2d arty attack to follow) vs a full strength infantry

What attack do you think the Auto Ambush played the Ambush card on?

What do you think the best option would be?

Is it a 5-medal game?

3d vs the 3-fig is a 12.5% chance of killing you, and you have a 12.5% chance of killing it.

4d vs the 2-fig is a 69% chance of killing you, and you can't kill it.

Potential 5d vs the 4-fig is 19% chance of killing you, but you have an 87.5% chance of killing it with a successful ambush.

I just build a quick spreadsheet with the various probabilities. Assuming that I didn't make any mistakes, and assuming that you'll be able to kill the 1-fig for a win on your next turn, it looks to me like...

Ambushing the first attack gives 68% chance of losing, but 12.5% chance of immediate win, and 32% chance of winning overall.

Ambushing the second attack seems to gives a 59% chance of losing, but by decreasing the chance of the second attack killing you, your chance of making it to the next turn and winning seem to be 41%. (That looks a little too favorable to me, but I don't have time to check it right now.)

Waiting for the third attack gives you a 74% chance of losing. But if you survive the second attack, you're certainly in good shape.

So it appears that ambushing #2 is the best move, but the computer probably chose #3. Yes?

I did a poor job of explaining the situation.

The game was to 6 medals.

In that case, sacrifice your 2-fig and save the Ambush for the 1-fig. Then (assuming a successful Ambush) use the Attack Right against the 3-fig infantry on your next turn, unless something better comes on your draw.

Well, as you can see, the auto ambush was played on the 4 fig Japanese infantry Shocked

After the failed first attack, I could not see a logical reason why the auto ambush was played there. Although it may have increased my chances of not losing the 2 fig infantry, it now gave my opponent a much greater chance to win outright that turn, which he did.

In ftf or vassal play I would have taken a chance that my 3 fig infantry would have survived and saved the ambush for the 1 fig attacker. This would have lead to a probable 5 to 5 game and given me another turn.

What we know (from the Memoir '44 Online Manual):

The software will show a little yellow icon on the board, next to the unit it considers the most appropriate to use your Ambush with. This spot (i.e. the unit that will use your Ambush, if given the opportunity) is automatically and systematically re-evaluated by the computer after each attack from your opponent, based on how the on-board tactical situation evolves.

Depending on your situation in the game (such as whether you lead or not, and by how much), the game's Artificial Intelligence will make a more offensive or more defensive choice regarding how to best play this Ambush. The type and health of the attacking and defensive units in play are also taken into consideration by the computer during this evaluation.

What we also know (based upon experience):

The AI does not always limit itself to placing only one yellow icon; it often places several.

What I suspect (based upon my own experience, as well as what Tank Commander has related here):

If the AI has placed multiple yellow icons, it does not rank them after that, but rather plays the Ambush card on the first one to be activated.

What I wonder:

Is there some way to modify this behavior? Such as clicking on one of the yellow icons to select it?

An interesting theory. It may be worth a try.

I opted to go with the auto ambush mode some time ago as I thought the manual mode was a bit worthless as most opponents got that white arrow tell during play.

The auto mode seemed to be doing a decent job but then in several of my past games, the ambush was not played on the best option. For example, on a full strength infantry instead of a 1 fig tank. this resulted in the tank killing off two of my units.

I wonder if the AI gets overloaded if there are several attackers.

Like I told the original poster, you aren't seeing things in real time. There's no way our connections are fast enough, so we're actually seeing things after they happened.

Either set it to auto, or be ready to have some ambushes fail because you don't set the Ambush card in time.

Oh, it works just fine. But if you're trying to cut it close and only 'activate' the card right before the attack, you'll likely miss it and think the game is broken...

I have the ambush on manual and always try to click yes or no real fast when my opponent attacks. It doesn't always go right, but it adds flavor to my games as I need to react real quick. Smile
