  Can't play in Windows 8.1 & OS X 10.9 Sat, 07 December 2013 18:06
Recently installed 8.1 and I'm running the latest version of Java (Update 45) and the current version of nVidia's drivers (331.82)

I'm launching the game from Steam and I'm able to get the intro movie with audio, and even click around the menu screen.

But as soon as I select a game to get into the launch screen, it freezes up. I can resize the window to get some activity.. you can hear the intro of the round but nothing beyond that.

Any more info I can provide? Any way of fixing this?

UPDATE

So far both my Windows 8.1 and OS X 10.9 show the exact same results. Both are running Java 7 Update 45. The game launches fine and I can click around the menu's fine. It's only until I go to "Play Solo" or "Service Records" that the whole screen freezes up.

I can click on an edge of the window and move it around and the game works but it's extremely awkward hah. So it appears the game just can't draw in normally and locks. Only when arranging the screen size does it force it to draw the images.

My computer is more than capabile of running the game. i7 CPU, GTX 460 GPU, 6GB ram... same goes for my Mac which is a MacBook Air 2011.

My router an airport extreme set to default settings. Nothing fancy configured there.

I have yet to bypass the router with my computer to see what happens... I'll try that when I get home.

I do not know much about Windows 8.1, but since so far no one else has responded to this, I will at least hazard a guess--

Which would be that it is a memory problem (i.e., not enough RAM to run both Windows 8.1 and Memoir '44). Resizing the window (if you are making it smaller) would use less memory (especially if coming down from full screen).

As I said, this is only a guess. I am a Mac man myself (although I do use Windows, perforce, at work.)

6 gb of ram installed.

Memoir 44 users java (check task manager). My guess is that it's an issue with Java and Windows 8.1.

What I meant by resizing the window is that when you resize it forces the screen to redraw the image. That's if you make it bigger or smaller.

I filled out one of DoW tech support requests but no one has gotten back with me yet.

Well I tried to fire up Memoir 44 on my MacBook Air with Mavericks and it's doing the same thing.. wtf!

Edit: I tried downloading and reinstalling the game on my mac and it reports that the .dmg is corrupt. Does Memoir 44 need an update to run on OSX 10.9?

No, it doesn't need an update. Since Mountain Lion (and including Mavericks) you will get this problem with downloads that do not have a security certificate that Apple now requires. Memoir '44 was developed before this was a requirement, thus does not have the certificate. You can get around this by going to the Security portion of System Preferences and making an exception.

Try this (from an earlier post by sdnative)

"Damaged File" error message ? No, it's only GateKeeper Thu, 20 September 2012 01:59
If you are trying to install Memoir '44 Online on MacOS, using the installer you just downloaded from Days of Wonder's web site, and you get an error saying there are Damaged files, then you should simply get around GateKeeper.

1. Open the System Preferences
2. Go to Security and Privacy
3. In tab General, modify the radio button "Allow installing applications downloaded from ", and choose "anywhere"
4. Then, run the installer again.
5. Once the installation is completed, you may reset the system preferences, if you wish.

If you search for Gatekeeper on this forum you can find this post, as well as others that deal with the problem

Cool, I'll try that when I get home. I'm wondering what the equivalent fix would be with Windows 8.1... it's just too coincidental that both new OS's have the exact same problem running this game.

edit: changing the settings did allow me to reinstall on my mac.. however the original problem still persists. Confused

And I am able to play Memoir '44 under Mavericks on my 2011 Mac laptop--although I do not go through Steam.

Wow, this is crazy then. The only thing that these two OS's have in common now are their version of Java and being on the same network. And I'm using the same router configuration I'm using before I had these problems which is an AirPort Extreme.

Well now I'm stumped. Sad

edit: another thought... what if memoir 44 is requiring a specific port to be open on my router?

Can you check which version of Java you're running?

Version 7 Update 45.

Interesting, same here.

I don't know if this helps at all but Ticket to Ride (Steam version) works perfectly... so does Small World 2 (Steam version).

Okay here's a real mental thing. When I remote in from my Mac to my PC via Microsoft Remote Desktop, the game plays fine (however really choppy).

I know that this version runs OpenGL 1.1 instead of 1.5 which is run on both my mac and pc.
